I think it's a good feature, it will make you think more tactically when using explosives or other weapons like that instead of just spamming, for example in the Halo games you couldn't just do that because a friend would get killed , but in Infinite there's no downsides to spamming explosives

This. For instance I was playing Dead Space 3 with my friend and you could customize your guns. So we both made rocket launchers with huge clips that also negated explosive damage so we were just running around shooting each other with rocket launchers and the enemies couldn’t touch us, it was moronic. I guess that was a game feature but still.
Something like Left 4 Dead should have friendly fire, but something like Super Smash shouldn’t have fricking friendly fire. If this solved friendly fire conversation that didn’t need to be had is causing a meltdown on reddit then I am honestly not surprised, literally anything will make those pedo midwits short circuit.
the point is to make you think about your line of fire and to prevent you from being able to fire at the enemy through your own allies (thus being safe from return fire)

friendly fire is great both out of an immersion sake but can also add extras depth to a game.
team killing is a genuine strategy in games, using dota as an example where you can kill your own team mates to avoid the enemy team claiming the kill for themselves.
i'd also rather take explosive weapons which are extremely powerful but the drawback is killing yourself/teamates over nerfed explosives because you can just spam them without a care

Depends on a game by game basis. L4D2 without friendly fire would be moronic since it takes half the challenge out of Expert (and griefing becomes less fun). TF2 would be god awful with friendly fire because of how massive rocket splash is, and you could effectively be spawn camped by your own fricking team if someone is a big enough Black person.
Depends on the game, depends on the options you're given.
It's kinda annoying in Fallout 1, because your companions won't give a frick, and spray smg bullets through you to hit enemies.
It's less annoying in Fallout 2, because you can give your companions Presets, that tell them to not shoot through you, and a bunch of other options.
In classic beat-em-ups, having the one game mode, where there's no team killing is a great coop experience, but once in a while it's still fun to be able to fight your friends too on the other game mode.
In something like a FPS, it really depends on the sub-genres. Something like Swat 4, it's fine. You can troll your team with the taser/pepper gun, but also just TK with regular weapons. So it plays into the slow/tactical approach that the game wants you to play. Everyone has to take their time, and work together.
