I seriously do not understand why companies do this. Did they run some market study that determined that shitty phone graphics have more broad appeal than an even remotely interesting artstyle?

What is wrong with sprites? Everybody thought SC1 looked great and SC2 looked like shit, so why are they spending time and money 3D modelling these ugly ass 1995 lego set looking buildings and uninspired unit designs when they could just stick to 2D? Or even better, do 3D but with competent art direction?

Because sprite based RTS can be made by one guy now (see DORF rts)
Why would a big company make something like that and put it in a box for 60$, people would laugh at them
AAA rts games are in the realm of f2p now and they look like f2p games, too big surprise.

This is obvious, I'm asking why they go for the fortnite look instead of making something remotely interesting or cool. It's almost like god himself has forced every game to be shit. Wanna have good gameplay? Cartoon graphics, frick you, SC2. Is that a cool looking game? Atrocious gameplay, go frick yourself, see Iron Harvest.

Red Alert 2 and Brood War are the only flawless games in this genre

The primary demographic for video games grew up playing mobile games. What do you think? As far as the industry is concerned, you are now too old for your personal tastes to matter anymore.

      says who?

SC2 looked like shit because they shifted the art style from that of 80/90s scifi to that of warcraft. Also spriting then and now is still fricking hard to do and a lot of the sprite RTS games where actually done in 3D first and then converted to sprites. RCT and AoE2 did this which is why they still hold up so well. Secondly the phone graphics are both cheap and a lot easier to read.

Terrain looks like Dota 2, which isn't a bad thing. Units look way too bland. That building doesn't look like anything at a glance other than a mess of sci-fi tech, which is a problem I also think Starcraft has, unlike AoE for example where you can easily identify something as a stable or archery range.

Funny, I think the opposite. For me it's pretty easy to differentiate Starcraft buildings at a glance and know exactly what a player has while all the AoE production structures have much more differentiation between races and ages than between the structures themselves which makes them much harder to differentiate.
That's probably just an issue of familiarity though.

I mean, they are pretty different from each other on both games. I just mean that in AoE I look at a building with horses on it, or a building with a bunch of shooting targets, or a mill, or a crane with a bunch of lumber around, and I know what they're used for. But the building in the OP could be where you make infantry, or maybe airships, or maybe it's an economic building, or a research one.

      good point.
starcraft has shit like the starport which is obviously an aviation building but other than that i agree completely. i don't see why a barracks has to be a barracks or the engineering bay an engineering bay.
and the things in op are undecipherable. turbines, a ring?
and i know it's hard to make a unique looking basic human unit but those are literally sc marines

Not that I care so much. I basically just want Starcraft 3 anyway. Or more accurately Broodwar 2.
