>Fully fleshed out "Undertale-like" game gets released with all the bells and whistles you'd expect (quirky characters, pacifist and genocide modes, spoooooky meta narrative, multiple musical themes, mystery and world building)
>Gets absolutely MOGGED by Toby releasing 10% of his unfinished game
How does he do it bros? Why is Toby so good at this RPG-like format to the point that someone doing something EXACTLY the same way only gets a fraction of the attention of the internet and is promptly forgotten?

Really? I felt like everhood was pretty straight forward with its setting.

It does the whole mystery shtick for like 60% of the game and then suddenly does a whole lore dump by literally dropping a piece of paper on the ground in the middle of the player's path that explains everything. Feels like they were afraid of people being confused at what was really happening by mid game, but it was a mistake. The game would have been way more interesting if we were in the dark longer, and if they left certain things unexplained.

It almost pulled off having a greater mystery with the extradimensional beings but that fell short

Who, the NotGasters? It's kind of spooky when you realize what they really are, but if the game had made them meta secrets that are never really explained like UT Gaster that would have been too on the nose.

Yeah, they most likely did it so you wont feel bad about killing everyone.

Only played the demo for Underfail, but honestly this is easy to answer... Name recognition. People know Toby, they hear this is a spinoff or whatever of a game they liked and hop on board. This game could be really good, or it could be a Lords of the Fallen to Dark Souls situation. A clone that doesn't understand what made the original good. Haven't played it or UT so I can't say for certain, but name recognition definately helps a project.

Let me guess, it's inspired by Earthbound, it's about depression, and the dialogue is full of heckin' wholesome memes.

Everhood is pretty great. It's pretty transparent about its inspirations, but it's a nice twist on the formula and is a blast to play. The first encounter with the gods was fantastic. I only did one playthrough though.

    Music is fricking great too.

For an indie game, Everhood was extremely successful. Just because you didn't manage to become as successful as Undertale doesn't mean you're a failure, far from it.
