That wasn't the impression I walked away with. It was more along the lines of "you were killing actual people with their own emotions and motives all along". At the end of the day Shadows/Gestalts bear the lion's share of the guilt since they both created the situation and knew more about it than the Replicants did.

Spec ops the line is so fricking overrated. Especially the "it was all in his head" twist at the end. The end should have just been Conrad berating you for making the situation worse, then give you the option to shoot him.

Yami hates losing. That's why he was considering killing Kaiba on the island just so he doesn't have to throw the game and Yugi had to stop him. The season is still shit and contrived but it wasn't ~that~ out of character for him, he was never a particularly nice person, especially in manga.

How is the manga for the 'original' arc? The first three or four arcs, with Yugi of course. I've had it in my backlog for ages.

nta, I recommend reading from the very beginning. It plays with other games like Tamagotchi, yo-yos, and theme parks before the author settled on Duel Monsters.

          Anonymous

there's a huge disparity since the original manga was more of a horror-fantasy story about a boy being possessed by an amoral sociopath
when the manga got soft-rebooted to Duelist it pretty much ignores most of Yami's development since the big growth he goes through at the end of the original was to spare/save Mokuba after he loses
he's way nicer in Duelist and his "evil" deeds get erased

      Anonymous

shame it was that dumb, in 1 it was fun to go EXTRA HERETICAL with blood magic and the major problem with it was inept or greedy less than skilled mages using it, whenever someone competent used it, it worked out fine

      Anonymous

It's not so much that the game expects you to side with blood mages, but rather that the game tries to go "the actions of some lunatics hungry for power should not reflect on all mages" but then even their leader ends up resorting to it when pressed and you just feel like a moron for helping them.
Maybe they were trying to go for a "both sides have their faults" thing but they did it terribly.

shame it was that dumb, in 1 it was fun to go EXTRA HERETICAL with blood magic and the major problem with it was inept or greedy less than skilled mages using it, whenever someone competent used it, it worked out fine

In 1 at least it makes sense for you to go blood mage since Grey Wardens are all about using any means and any people they can get if it means preventing or stopping a blight, which is exactly what you do.

yeh but after hours of watching blood mages self destruct i was basically mentally a templar myself at the end

        Anonymous

don't forget that the joining ritual IS blood magic, ancient and sort of primitive blood magic, but blood magic none the less

the entire existence of the Grey Wardens is due to blood magic, and the Templars sort of put a blind eye towards it because they don't want the shitstorm of outing them as heretics

          Anonymous

Even if it wasn't blood magic the templars still wouldn't want to start shit with wardens. Not unless they forgot they'd likely be next on the list to go into the darkspawn trenches if the wardens were gone.

It was a fully wasted potential of a arc by having garbage duel gameplay.

The virtual world arc of Yu-Gi-Oh are the peak of filler, good animation, engaging duels throwing twists like triple duels, ban lists, and deck masters, and it actually ties with previous filler.

      Anonymous

I like it a lot as well but it suffers from both pacing (after how "action" packed it starts with Yugi losing the god cards and Dartz summoning big monsters they slow down a lot for a while and the story only picks up until the Raphael duel, then it slows down until the last Joey duel and then the last duel is way to complicated for its own good, even if it is way shorter than the final Noah duel) and not using the whole monster spirits all that much, I feel it would've worked better if it had both worlds fusing and real monsters attacking was a constant threat

They'd have just sat around until their friends came and picked them up. The smart thing to do would have been rip the seal up and explain to Raphael why his philosophy on life is moronic

  22. 7 months ago
    Anonymous

It never dawned on me at the time but I recenlty watched an analysis of this duel and
not only it was pretty dumb that Raphael's strategies worked at all but Atem had literally no reason to play the Seal, there was nothing to be gained or lost from the duel itself other than his pride about losing and while Raphael starts talking mad shit about Atem he hand no reason to believe a single word of it

would have been more interesting if Raphael had played a proper strategy deck that was beyond infuriating to play against
jar-based stall, lockdown with final countdown or something equally degenerate (for that era)

A lot of Yugioh duels are won because someone made a stupid misplay. For example Mai lost against Marik for summoning Ra instead of just attacking with her 3 harpies. Or she lost against Yami for falling for his face down normal spell bluff. She got fricked by the writers so hard.

        Anonymous

the bluff is a reasonable course of action for a character to take in that situation but not attacking with the Harpies is a genuine pants on head moron moment, like there's literally no reason to try to summon Ra in that scenario when they could have contrived one like "oh he has a trap that destroys monsters when attacking but Ra is immune to traps"

          Anonymous

I think the running theme of that series of duels was Marik's opponents being tempted to use Ra against him. Kind of like in LOTR people were tempted to use the Ring against Sauron.

        Anonymous

In the case of Mai, needing a degree in Egyptian literature is just plot fricking her over. Atem would have won on the spot if he had just set the seal. Even if he didn't want to use it, it's an extra card. Why would not want an extra card?
