the 3 classic fantasy races (human, elf, dwarf) are always safe choices because they have well established characteristics so it's pretty hard for a dev to frick them up. but with other races, devs usually have no clue what to do with them so they end up with no unique roleplaying options

One major benefit and draw to being a human is that it's the blankest canvas. I don't want to be a tree humping Elf.
