In think it's pretty fun but I played Slim and Cabot and very rarely played monster so what the frick do I know. It's honestly kinda sad because they have some cool monster/kaiju designs and some 10/10 women trapped in here and the only porn they get is disgusting monster shit.

I understand why they did it, considering how badly they fricked up their own launch (and GOOD LORD did they frick it) but the re-use of assets (2 Behemoths, 2 Goliaths, 2 Krakens) and character re-use was probably not the way to save it. Also the game could be a miserable experience if your tracker was braindead. The game gets massive kudos in my books though for being the only asymmetrical game with a clearly defined role balance/imbalance that changed and could be developed around where the monster was your b***h in stage 1, roughly even in stage 2 and basically won at stage 3 creating a sliding scale and gave not finding the monster a LOT of tension

      Anonymous

Personally I always liked the monster gameplay, but it came out at the height of preorder version madness and suffered greatly because of it. Then they trend chased and made a weird fricking moba knock off mode and it just spiraled. If it came back and they focused hard on the hunt and arena stuff I'd be quite happy

If you sucked at it, it was awful.
If you were Hunter and any one person on your team sucked, it was awful.
If everyone in the game was good at it, it was one of the most exhilarating and unique PvP gaming experiences ever made.

They capitalized on that same hunter-killer scenario in Aliens Vs Predator pvp. I'll never for AVP2's amazing survival mode, or just how fun an asymmetric competitive shooters could be in general when balanced delicately.

Mate, the game was dead less than a couple of weeks after release despite having a ton of advertisement and reputable devs (left for dead)
If that's not a testiment to how utterly uninteresting the game was I don't what to tell you.

It was polished so I'm sure many shallow morons thought it wasn't that bad or anything but the game fundamentally had no depth and offered little to no replayability, therefore no one replayed. Which is pretty fricking dumb for an online pvp game.

replayability for online games comes from the other players
if developers dont find a way to make the lobbies somewhat balanced it's dead from day 1
for this game in particular it was already apparant after the open beta/advertisement they did
evolve came out with no actual matchmaking system and it died after the 1st week

          Anonymous

how fun the game was depended on a few factors:
          are you the monster?
if you're humans do you have a 4 man team?

if the answer to those is no then the game really blew fricking ass
I had matches where the trapper domed us but not the monster, I had matches where my team never caught the monster, I had matches where my team lost to level 1 monsters
and the wait between matches sucked too

it’s like if they took the tank from l4d and made the whole game revolve around that except the environment doesn’t matter cause the only time any progress is made is when the monster gets domed

        Anonymous

        >environment doesn't matter
You never even watched the game, let alone played it, if you have this opinion. A poorly placed dome will actively frick the hunters over more than the monster and a mediocre one will give the monster places to hide and break line of sight. Environment allows monsters to hide in almost plain sight right as hunters pass within 30m. Environment lets you jump on even coordinated groups and separate them with elevation and knockback.

it was hyped up as something new and interesting for the current next gen consoles of that time
it ended up being a monument to nickle and diming the player base by having paywall content on release and much more planned
plus it released quite depressingly empty with a small amount of maps and monsters to play
it died like all these 1vMany games do once people figure out how to exploit a monsters weaknesses, thus making it impossible to play as the monster after the first week or two, which kills the matchmaking completely
once strats got out on how to shut down each monster that was it, game dead

Such a good concept for a game run into the ground by greedy devs. I still remember how fricking proud they were sayin how the game was desinged for mtx shit from the ground up.

the worst running game of the entire decade

      Anonymous

I remember it being a lot of fun, but like all multiplayer games very frustrating. Having a bad tracker on your team damn near guaranteed a loss, for example
I can't speak on the monetization, frankly I don't remember it

For me the game died because it got stale. Me and a buddy would queue up with 2 randoms+ a monster and either destroy the monster in stage 1 or get our asses fisted at stage 3. Idk how the devs could've fixed that. But I would love if they could, the game was conceptually great and did a lot of things right

        Anonymous

In my experience back during launch and during Stage 2, it all boiled down to if the hunters had even half a clue what they were doing.

If they did, the monster had basically no chance and would be fricked before leaving stage 1.

If they did not, a competent monster would easily reach stage 3 without even seeing the hunters (or maybe getting domed ONCE and escaping), and then assrape them.

As Goliath, this was incredibly easy because flamethrower did humongous amounts of damage and his transversal was great.

          Anonymous

The game tried out a new concept but it wasn't tested out enough in advance for the devs to realize that the 'loop' is cursed and doesn't offer good replayability. Put the 2K monetization scheme on top of that and you got a big pile of failure.

  11. 2 years ago
    Anonymous

To clarify, I personally did not like that they took away the dome from trapper.
I understand why they did it, wanting to speed up the game and encourage more hunter/monster interaction is good. But this meant taking away strategy from the monster. Focusing down the trapper is now much less viable, consequently increasing the medic's strategic weight even more thus making the game more predictable.

      Anonymous

Actually ends up depending a lot more on the team composition of the Hunters, ultimately. If the Trapper is someone like Abe or Crow, you can safely ignore them. But if you've got a Maggie or god forbid either version of Griffin and the Trapper player isn't dogshit you will have a real rough time if you don't burn them down first.

        Anonymous

        >ignore abe
Good luck getting any room to breathe for the rest of the game. Griffon has always been the S tier trapper, yeah.

          Anonymous

Abe does a frickton of damage, yes, but his stasis nades are negligible if you're not dogshit with your traversal power. Crow is slightly more annoying because of the range on his stasis but as long as you have the Abe constantly try to chase you around you neuter his damage pretty hard - damage falloff hits him like a truck on any kind of real range.

            Anonymous

I'll be honest, I don't really know anything about crow. I am pretty sure his pet bird doesn't actually do anything.

              Anonymous

It's very good at finding the monster at longer range. Think of it as Abe's tracking dart but reversed, where Abe has to find the monster to then track it accurately for a long time while Crow can get full vision on it from far away for a short time. Crow is better at searching for the monster, Abe is better at chasing the monster.

The idea of the game is fun in theory but in practice it boils down to the monster needing to remove as much fun from the game as possible for the hunters.
1 bad player on the hunters or a bad monster player immediately kills the game beyond repair.

            Anonymous

well, to be fair, the monster is built for teamsmearing while the hunter is built for teamwork. Hunters get to respawn as many times as you kill them, the game ends when the monster does.

It was fun for maybe 10 hours after which I'd seen everything the game had to offer. Whether you won the game or not as a Hunter was mostly a dice throw between your teammates being moronic or the monster being incompetent. It was a waste of money and time on release, and I doubt anything has changed since. Only reason anyone cares about it now is because some streamers started playing it due to the current release drought.

I always did have a certain soft spot for Evolve even though the launch was dogshit. The again, I typically only played either monster (Goliath was god OP as frick if you knew what you were doing) or Emet as medic.

Are the matchmaking servers actually back though? I would unironically play again. I always wanted to somehow get my hands on Emet's voice lines, but I don't know how to rip them out of the game files.

The authentication servers for Games For Windows Live were literally two desktops that sat under a desk in Building 83 and were kept up six years after GFWL's end of life just because a couple of the senior support engineers on the Store team played Age of Empires III.

I think the game didn't evolve enough to be ready for release. If I remember correctly they said in trailers that the environment also played a role and was dangerous to the hunters but in reality this didn't matter. If the monster could lead the hunters into more dangerous part of the map and make them get bogged down fighting other monsters or something similar. But they released the game bare bones and the core gameplay wasn't enough.

theres a moderate skill floor and its a coop game so if one person is trash that is essentially a wipe as every role is absolutely essential, except maybe trapper in terms of keeping people alive during bubble but him going down is still a severe detriment overall

there are hunters that are just very hard to play as well so definitely stick to the ones that say "easy", hunters like torvald depend on actually great foresight and skill from the player so if youre trash youll literally do 0 dps with him

even if I somewhat agree, evolve had the right idea
making matches faster and more prone to hunter/monster interaction was the correct direction to take

        Anonymous

I wholeheartedly disagree. A good, alert team of hunters could force encounters with the monster within the first few minutes, while a good monster player could avoid the hunters until its third evolution. I still remember the webm that used to circulate threads of the game back near release, of a young goliath juking the hunters simply by hiding in vegetation and breaking line of sight within the environment.

The game rewarded proficiency before Stage 2, as games should. Then it became a moronic Benny Hill Show simulator.

          Anonymous

Way too many games in legacy ended up with the monster not seen until stage 3. On top of that, if your trapper was bad you wouldn't get to fight the monster even if you did see him.

            Anonymous

It was a brutal game, requiring really good teamwork and alertness from the entire team of hunters, which would lead to most pub games being skewed towards the monster if they were at least halfway decent.

What I think also contributed to this was the fact that the two "meta" monsters, Kraken and Wraith, had absurd mobility and could be gone from a location in the blink of an eye. They were, all things considered, designed like shit compared to Goliath.

The OG Evolve when everyone knew what they were doing was one of the best multiplayer games ever released, but having to trust the average moron to perform was a nightmare. Stage 2 was far easier to play, but it wasn't nearly as good overall.
