even without that shit smeared on the screen. they made the colour composition of the area worse.
much darker trees, less visible moss on the rocks, the dirt is too light ruining contrast of the grass and the colour of the water.
brown dirt most obviously worked much better. I don't know what they were thinking.

They removed the moss from the rocks for some reason.

they didn't remove it. it's now a washed out lime green that is barely different from the colour of the rocks. The rocks are really washed out, crappy colours too. looks disgusting like breath of the wild.

New graphics, a map, and some some sort of additional in-game currency to use in the arcade area. Apparently they've changed and added to the challenges, so maybe there's more stuff to do in the worlds. I think it's a little early to say it's good now, when we haven't really seen any of the changes besides the questionable graphics update.

I feel like the big problem with this game is that Mario Odyssey was basically a Banjo-Kazooie game and it made Yooka-Laylee feel even more amateur.

      Anonymous

This. Mario Odyssey is a better Banjo Kazooie game than either of the Banjo Kazooie games, honestly. And I say that as someone who adores both Banjo Kazooie games. Yooka-Laylee misunderstood what made BK special.

On the other hand, the 2D Yooka game was fricking great.

Dude it’s the best 3D Mario by a not-even-close margin and the Banjo DNA is all over it. Buddy-duo dynamic, transformations that give you new powers, exploration-driven collection without kicking you out, tons of minigames and subsections, and while it doesn’t have a true “quiz minigame” it captures the magic somewhat with Hint Art (it’s like if Grunty’s Furnace Fun was all “see the picture on my screen”, level fact trivia, and the timer challenges; I admit I miss the audio puzzles, but no Grunty personal life questions compensates for it)

Plus the usual 3D Mario charm of absolutely wacky ass movement tech and a postgame that’s as big as the main game.

On the other hand, the 2D Yooka game was fricking great.

Mario Odessey worked because it solved the "100%-ing a Collectathon game can sometimes be unfun" problem by making the game outright tell you that you SHOULDN'T 100% the game and just get what you need. Of the 836 unique moons you only need 500 to get the games equivalence of a true ending. Going past that is purely your own violition.

BotW does the same thing with Korok seeds, with that game literally shitting on you if you are deranged enough to get all 900 of them.

        Anonymous

I got all the Odyssey moons and had a goddamn blast doing it, the only time it ever came CLOSE to feeling like a “waste of time” was volleyball and jump rope just because of the tendency to choke at like the 87th iteration and having to start over.

I loved everything about Odyssey, I 100%ed every level on Switch and max ranked Balloon World (also fricking fantastic), then when emulation got to a point where it was good on PC, I 100%ed it all over again, then installed the Superstar Mode mod and am going for 100% again.

It’s too fricking good if you are a Banjo Kazooie fan. It takes everything great about Banjo and just ratchets it up past 11. God damn do I love Mario Odyssey.

What elements does it take from Banjo to make it feel like a Banjo game? (haven't played Odyssey)

            Anonymous

NTA, but probably the sheer variety of things. Banjo has a lot of different moments where you control different characters, get transformations, use power-ups you unlock to explore new areas and find new challenges. Tooie straight up goes Goldeneye but with shooting eggs at things, even. Odyssey's Cappy takeover power and massive smorgasbord of various challenges and scenarios may as well be the successor to that concept more than anything Mario,

Just to piggyback on these anons, Odyssey is phenomenal in terms of variety of gameplay, level design, and challenge where unless you're going for 100% there probably won't be a point where you get weary of it. It's creative and fun, and while the mechanics still aren't as clean and satisfying as 64, it's a out as close to any 3d mario

            Anonymous

            >buddy duo character that chats with you and enhances your moveset (admittedly, without the snark of Kazooie; BK’s definitely got it all over Odyssey in the humor department)
            >collection doesn’t kick you out, it’s open ended exploration where you amass collectibles and “plug them in” to get to the next level
            >capture mechanic is like mumbo transforms on steroids, become a new creature with new abilities
            >level environments are wildly varied with super unique artstyles and aesthetics and npcs to talk to
            >just a zillion collectibles. There’s shit to collect everywhere
            >late game challenges your game knowledge with trivia puzzles in the form of pictures that act as hints to find secret moons
            >minigames everywhere, if you liked it in Tooie
            >in addition to normal sequence, levels have special warps to secret parts of other levels to find hidden collectibles

The biggest “failures” of BK emulation are the weaker sense of humor (it has more moments than your usual Mario game but it’s tame by Rare standards) and the lack of a proper overworld.

              Anonymous

Oh, and of course, Banjo uses the metroidvania logic of “unlocking moves”, Odyssey does not, you get the full schmoovement kit in level one. It does have the “go back later” effect nested away behind things like outfit doors, where you unlock an outfit in one kingdom to solve a puzzle that opens a door in a prior kingdom; but it isn’t quite the same charm as “OH SHIT I CAN BREAK THESE OPEN NOW? I have to go back 5 worlds”

            Anonymous

From large maps to the stars/moons now being a very common collectable that you find all over just exploring.
Mario Odessey feels more like a Banjo game than any Mario game.

Like you could make a mod replacing the Mario cast to Banjo and his crew and this would've been a perfectly acceptable Banjo-Threeie.

Cappy’s dialogue would need to be rewritten to spend more time insulting NPCs with jokes about their breath and weight. For frick’s sake the game uses “number of hats worn simultaneously” as a diegetic health bar in 5 different boss fights, no way Kazooie doesn’t comment on that
