In the town I went to uni there was a decrepit building on Main Street that never got renovated or any business to try and open. Nah, but they usually are more hidden than normal job listings. I got my first job in my field with no experience simply because the manager actually saw that as a positive, and he was kind of old school in that I think he only put the job listing in the local paper.

I did/have none of this and I'm currently making $86k a year working at a local non-profit where I have 20 holidays, 4 weeks PTO (will be 5 weeks next year), yearly 4.5% raises, and yearly bonuses based on how long you've been working with the company.

If you want to do gamedev stuff, do some smaller indie games. Trust me, you can do a lot without a lot of investment and it has some value on your resume. Don't do a platformer (legit shooting yourself in the foot). Do a 3D game if you can or something you can make very quickly. Making an indie game doesn't take long if you don't have a massive scope and realize that it's mostly making certain parts with lots of details. (most games can be simplified into concepts to make). I will warn you you will know very early on when a Steam page goes up if something is going to do well or not. Do Steam Fests and secondary sites to sell keys on are great.
Don't work at a AAA game dev company unless you really want to, all that is left there outside Indie and AA companies is hell on earth. It's all contract work, and you are forced to do overtime for double hours to keep the contract renewed.

Some of them will reject you but eventually you'll get something. While doing that, you can do whatever you want, maybe grinding for IT certs to take an entry level job 1-2 years down the line. it ain't that hard. I was a basement dweller too and got my CS degree at 33 and am working front-end now.

I overslept and missed my first interview, but for some reason was let through to the 2nd round of interviews and eventually got the job. I initially wasn't that interested in the job and had only applied out of obligation, but it turned out to be really comfy, so I'm glad everything worked out
I have been laid off twice since last June. In both job searches, I applied for a combined of at least 500-600 jobs. The ONLY interview's I received were at places where a relative already worked or I knew somebody from previous jobs. Job listings are literally fake. You will never get a job by applying to some company's indeed ad if you don't know anybody there. It is a complete waste of time other than fulfilling the unemployment requirements.

Engineers-in-training start at a very low wage, but they will hire you with 0 experience. After you prove yourself for the first few years your first promotion usually comes with a hefty raise. Otherwise you jump ship because companies will pay for intermediate engineers that already have experience.

I finished school in the UK at 16 and I've been a NEET for the last 15 years.
I saw all my relatives work their whole lives and still end up poor, miserable and sick. So even at 16 I knew it was a rigged game and decided I'd throw away my pride so long as I get to be a NEET. I don't regret it, I feel really bad for people who have no choice but to work. It not only cannibalises all your time, but it chips away at your soul and you can see these people just trapped in a pit of despair they'll never escape from.
Work itself isn't bad. If I was rich I'd work for fun. Store clerk a month, warehouse another, maybe delivering food a few times a week. Once I get tired I just quit. That would be heaven.

Indie gamedev, however, sounds really fricking hard. I'd imagine you have to be multitalented to reach even some degree of success.
If you want to do gamedev stuff, do some smaller indie games. Trust me, you can do a lot without a lot of investment and it has some value on your resume. Don't do a platformer (legit shooting yourself in the foot). Do a 3D game if you can or something you can make very quickly. Making an indie game doesn't take long if you don't have a massive scope and realize that it's mostly making certain parts with lots of details. (most games can be simplified into concepts to make). I will warn you you will know very early on when a Steam page goes up if something is going to do well or not. Do Steam Fests and secondary sites to sell keys on are great.
Don't work at a AAA game dev company unless you really want to, all that is left there outside Indie and AA companies is hell on earth. It's all contract work, and you are forced to do overtime for double hours to keep the contract renewed.

While doing that, you can do whatever you want, maybe grinding for IT certs to take an entry level job 1-2 years down the line. it ain't that hard. I was a basement dweller too and got my CS degree at 33 and am working front-end now.

The ONLY interview's I received were at places where a relative already worked or I knew somebody from previous jobs. Job listings are literally fake. Otherwise you jump ship because companies will pay for intermediate engineers that already have experience.

I finished school in the UK at 16 and I've been a NEET for the last 15 years.
I saw all my relatives work their whole lives and still end up poor, miserable and sick. So even at 16 I knew it was a rigged game and decided I'd throw away my pride so long as I get to be a NEET. I don't regret it, I feel really bad for people who have no choice but to work. It not only cannibalises all your time, but it chips away at your soul and you can see these people just trapped in a pit of despair they'll never escape from.
Work itself isn't bad. If I was rich I'd work for fun. Store clerk a month, warehouse another, maybe delivering food a few times a week. Once I get tired I just quit. That would be heaven.

generally, what's the etiquette on using references if they openly told me they'd be willing to be one? this was my old boss and manager from a job I had 7 months ago and I barely started applying to jobs again.
should I give em a call and ask if they're still okay with being references, or just say frick it. the issue is that I got laid off, and this is my 2nd job out of uni.
Always ask first, mostly so they can be expecting a call or email. Be polite so you can use them as references again down the line
You should ask them because if you put them down and suddenly get contacted without warning then they are going to be going "What the frick?" because you didn't even give them a heads up.

yup nation wide the unemployment rate is officially 11% which means its higher because the government includes paid formations as "jobs". you're also expected to be on the same academic path since 15 and only work within that domain so if you career hopped a lot of employers will cross you out
