it was pretty disappointing how lazy that was, they should have had something that reminded you about your deceased partner at some point in the game but the protag just pretty much forgets about it after you leave the vault besides a few minor dialogue options. also you can return to the vault ten months later and it still has the same dialogue when you click skeletons etc. as if you just started the game, lazy.

Just like real life, a child is a massive, permanent burden on your character with tons of implications. None of those other backgrounds are anywhere close to such a hard limit on who your character can actually be.

Starfield isn't like FO4. You can pick a background that is referenced in dialogue. You start the game as a miner, find an alien artifact and are told where to go to continue the main quest. Then you're free. It's like being a prisoner in Skyrim.
