I went on resetera for the first time a few years ago, it's crazy how much of an insanely fascist place it is. obviously since it came from the gulag that was neogaf it's just so weird how people willingly go there. they are extremely terrified of anyone who doesn't agree with them on everything.
I heard it's the clickbait journalists (Kotaku, IGN, TheGamer, Polygon, etc.) responsible for harassing Sony to censor Stellar Blade so they can gloat over it and mock gamers.
I played the demo. It was fine. I was going to wait until it came out to see if it was actually uncensored. Now that it's confirmed to be censored, I'm going to hold off and see how it pans out.
Gameplay is mid. It's Dark Souls combat, but with Nier elements like dodges so on, people say it's Sekiro, but it's no where near as smooth to be Sekiro, and both systems clash sometimes and make it awkward. The map exploration is also limited, it's like a DMC map.
Since it's one of the first Korean games that isn't a blatant P2W grindfest, I'll give it a pass because there is definitely potential.
Combat looks pretty good imo when it all clicks.
The enemy just needs to be 4x more aggressive so that you can clash swords much more often like in sekiro

Problem is that often times the enemy hits you maybe 3 or 4 times then stops. It works for a normal soulslike or even dmc game but in a sekiro game where you are obliged to parry often it feels weird.
it tries to be Sekiro and Nier at the same time, that's why they clash. Sekiro is all about parries and timing counters, SB wants you to parry but sometimes the correct answer is to dodge, so combat doesn't have a flow or rhythm.
I think games like MGR, kinda did this balance decently. Mind you SB actually copies a lot from MGR hence the prevalence of qtes in combat. I think it would have been better if the dodge was also a form of attack like in mgr so that you are always in the enemies' face. Witch time dodge that slows you down and only serves to push you away from the enemy is the worst form of damage mitigation in action vidya imo. I was never a fond of it.
It does take time to master a fluid combat and it's very hard to do, SB is trying to piece together what works in other games but fails at making them work cohesively, it's a good attempt for sure. Hopefully they make another game and smooth things out.

yeah they glow different colors, but you're required to do that action, in MGR you can choose what action to do, either dodge or parry except for some very specific boss fight attacks, the movement is also a lot more free so you're allowed to make those decisions according to what feels best for you.
In SB if you fail the glow attack, it feels bad and interrupts the flow of combat, that's why I think Nier is a better comparison than Sekiro or MGR.
Honestly, I would make it simpler like if it's a melee attack, you parry it. If it's a ranged attack you dodge it. That way it doesnt break the flow of the game too much. The way your character moves back and forth with the enemy probably sounded nice in concept like a dance, but it wasnt implemented very well and feels stiff.
In what way? It just looks like whaling on something that doesn't react, and unlike in things like DMC it doesn't look cool, it looks like genshit where you wail on an enemy then use ability one, then wail on it, use ability two, wail, one, wail, three

This. I think the game is a bit too easy with how much the bosses flinch. Some bosses you can pretty much stunlock to death until they perform their charger attack that you either have to parry or dodge. They really need to give them more hyper armor to force you to parry often.

One thing I don't like about this game's boss fights is that the bosses will sometimes do like a cutscene attack in the middle of the fight and the camera zooms into their model and you lose visibility of your character, then you're expected to dodge or parry, but you can't even see his hand/sword or whatever.

Based on playing the demo:
No glow: parry
Red glow: parry multiple attacks in quick succession
Yellow glow: dodge
Blue glow: dodge forward when your sword glows blue
Purple glow: dodge backward when your sword glows purple

Someone else will have to answer you anon. I'm an enthusiastic gamer, but not a good one. I had to switch to story mode when I got to Abbadon in the demo. But yeah that's when I saw the in-fight prompts.
In normal mode you'll still have QTE prompts in cutscenes, but during fights you don't get bullet time to do anything.

Souls is about finding your moment and conserving enough stamina to stay alive, while if you're playing SB and not hitting an attack button at any given moment you probably have brain damage

I won't pretend to understand their reasoning that well, but basically it just means action game that's kind of challenging and isn't specifically like Devil May Cry or Monster Hunter. I used to think it meant something that at least copied the general format IE level design or the basic mechanics like the Souls/Bonfire version of checkpoints, but with the sheer amount of games the subgenre is used for and the significant differences between them all it's pretty clear that there's no defining traits to the term anymore. Just another word people overused until it means nothing at all.

No it's not.
At best it has a superficial resemblance to MGR but even MGR had launches, air combos, and multiple weapons.
Aerial combat is very hard to do and it's much easier to make gameplay feel really tight if you keep it grounded (pun not intended), plus most of the time it's either pointless or barebones compared to ground combat. Even DMC which has excellent aerial movesets and probably arguably the best around doesn't really have the groundwork for the enemies to interact with it too much, so it's mostly just fun because being good at games is fun if that makes sense.
I think it's a much smarter decision to focus on just getting the general combat down first and foremost before venturing into the skies.
i feel like the action genre already figured grounded combat, its time for some aerial combat to be added again to newer games

Aerial combat would be better iml if you could clash or parry enemies while in the air in real time. Also make it so that you can air dash freely too so that you arent just hovering on the air. I think nier automata did air combat rather well for how shallow the melee movesets were.

I don't really know the solution to be fair, I'm just saying I'd rather them focus on default gameplay than add half assed aerial stuff like most games do when it's

It would be great to see someone do a formula similar to Spider-Man Web of Shadows where there was combat on the ground, walls, and air.
It has different bits from other games. This game has a stinger and obligatory judgment cut that mgr lacks. While it doesnt have natural air launch attacks to use in tandem with air combos, it also has a more in depth parrying and dodge system than mgr. While MGR has zandatsu, sb has a devil trigger. Granted zandatsu is infinitely a cooler feature.
it wasnt really the same the enemies could easily stun lock you and you would end up wasting your ripper mode just getting rapped against the wall by those gorillas

Ah granted mgr did have devil trigger somewhat, it just have you unlimited energy for zandatsu. Tachy mode in sb gives you a new moveset and oufit and weapon.
The character design of Tachy is fantastic.

Well the Tachy fight was a bit dissapointing tho. She just keeps letting you wail at her for the first 2/3rd of the fight and only the last 1/3rd of the fight actually presents a challange. A bit bummed about that. Also the bosses in this game in general has some really weird pauses between their attacks that doesn't flow very well.
I am. Great production values, it's carrying the pretty cheesy story. The combat is good though it could be harder. They probably should have unlocked hard difficulty from the start.
It's super stylish. I don't mean that in a "there's lots of particle effects" way, just that the general movement of the fights looks cool. The snapping between animations can be jarring however.

With a few database tweaks I think the combat can be really kino imo. I think the combat is the way it is because judging from youtube videos, most players are simply just bad. Imagine if the bosses attacked twiced as much.

MGR/ DMC 4 is like 7 hours long which is fine enough for an action game with bearable story and memes. Longer isn't mean better when your only meaningful attack is stinger and parry counter. Oh and the story and characters in SB is unbearable bad. At the end of game i still don't care about any of the characters, all of them so obnoxious and annoying. Yes. In other action games. Parrying and counters just do just that. They arent attached to different movesets. Some give a temporary buff like nier automata's perfect dodge depending on what chips you have installed.

Honestly most action games are pretty shallow when it comes to reactivity. This is why Nioh 2 is so great. It gives you a ton of options for every encounter and move so you can chain a ton of combos and personalize your movesets.

Is there a point to doing the different square and triangle dial combos that Eve has besides it looking cool? They don't seem to have any notable properties like being launchers, hard r knockdowns, staggers
Some of them move you around for better positioning, deal different amounts of hits, gather more energy for skills, take different times to execute for different size openings, etc. So not really, but kind of if you want to be technical about it. Treat it like you would something vaguely similar to DMC, your goal is specifically to be cool and not just be the loser who either solely uses the meta option or Stinger + Dodge Rolls your way through the game.

There always is, but action games in particular are plagued by multiple unique strains of autism that are very noticeable and yet suspiciously always have people replying to them consistently.
How hard is the game? I've see Distortion2 is playing with just the skin suit on his first playthrough but that is an autismo speedrunner. Looks on the easy side.
yeah it's not bad. A lot more DMC than Bayonetta which is what I was expecting. My biggest problem is getting EVE to get out of the way of things; that first boss people used to show off the gore censorship I kept having problems. The boss would raise its swords above its head and I literally couldn't stop being locked on fast enough to dodge at first.
I'm enjoying the combat and the music is great and reminds of Automata, but I wanna strangle someone every time I try to explore and the game says "lol no let me do that for you through the robot or yellow paint". It's my first yellow paint experience and I hate it already, frick sony

As someone who hasn’t played a lot of Korean games (besides Maple Story.) I really like the art styles in both Stellar Blade and Lies of P. I went into these games expecting a slightly anime-lite aesthetic, or like something that just felt like a blatant rip off of Japanese games. But they both feel distinct. Almost Western, but incredibly focused on beauty and maybe even a bit luxurious (for lack of a better word.) instead of the gritty realism that the West loves so much.

Gameplay is mid. It's Dark Souls combat, but with Nier elements like dodges so on, people say it's Sekiro, but it's no where near as smooth to be Sekiro, and both systems clash sometimes and make it awkward. The map exploration is also limited, it's like a DMC map.
Since it's one of the first Korean games that isn't a blatant P2W grindfest, I'll give it a pass because there is definitely potential.
Combat looks pretty good imo when it all clicks.
The enemy just needs to be 4x more aggressive so that you can clash swords much more often like in sekiro

Problem is that often times the enemy hits you maybe 3 or 4 times then stops. It works for a normal soulslike or even dmc game but in a sekiro game where you are obliged to parry often it feels weird.
it tries to be Sekiro and Nier at the same time, that's why they clash. Sekiro is all about parries and timing counters, SB wants you to parry but sometimes the correct answer is to dodge, so combat doesn't have a flow or rhythm.
I think games like MGR, kinda did this balance decently. Mind you SB actually copies a lot from MGR hence the prevalence of qtes in combat. I think it would have been better if the dodge was also a form of attack like in mgr so that you are always in the enemies' face. Witch time dodge that slows you down and only serves to push you away from the enemy is the worst form of damage mitigation in action vidya imo. I was never a fond of it.
It does take time to master a fluid combat and it's very hard to do, SB is trying to piece together what works in other games but fails at making them work cohesively, it's a good attempt for sure. Hopefully they make another game and smooth things out.
yeah they glow different colors, but you're required to do that action, in MGR you can choose what action to do, either dodge or parry except for some very specific boss fight attacks, the movement is also a lot more free so you're allowed to make those decisions according to what feels best for you.
In SB if you fail the glow attack, it feels bad and interrupts the flow of combat, that's why I think Nier is a better comparison than Sekiro or MGR.
Honestly, I would make it simpler like if it's a melee attack, you parry it. If it's a ranged attack you dodge it. That way it doesnt break the flow of the game too much. The way your character moves back and forth with the enemy probably sounded nice in concept like a dance, but it wasnt implemented very well and feels stiff.

This. I think the game is a bit too easy with how much the bosses flinch. Some bosses you can pretty much stunlock to death until they perform their charger attack that you either have to parry or dodge. They really need to give them more hyper armor to force you to parry often.

One thing I don't like about this game's boss fights is that the bosses will sometimes do like a cutscene attack in the middle of the fight and the camera zooms into their model and you lose visibility of your character, then you're expected to dodge or parry, but you can't even see his hand/sword or whatever.
Dont the bosses glow a particular color that tell you if you should dodge or parry? Threshold qtes that serve to transistion into the next phase of the boss however tell you exact buttons to press just like mgr.
Based on playing the demo:
No glow: parry
Red glow: parry multiple attacks in quick succession
Yellow glow: dodge
Blue glow: dodge forward when your sword glows blue
Purple glow: dodge backward when your sword glows purple

why do action games dont do aerial combos anymore? that was one of my favorite things in devil may cry and god of war, is it laziness?
Aerial combat is very hard to do and it's much easier to make gameplay feel really tight if you keep it grounded (pun not intended), plus most of the time it's either pointless or barebones compared to ground combat. Even DMC which has excellent aerial movesets and probably arguably the best around doesn't really have the groundwork for the enemies to interact with it too much, so it's mostly just fun because being good at games is fun if that makes sense.
I think it's a much smarter decision to focus on just getting the general combat down first and foremost before venturing into the skies.

I don't know if I would agree with that at all, man. Even moreso when you consider that all these games are not being made by the same people at all, like even the DMC guys are still working out the enemy side of the combat after all these years.
That's why I typically dislike it generally speaking, it's either one sided or just another flavour of the same ground combat but slightly above the floor this time. I don't really know the solution to be fair, I'm just saying I'd rather them focus on default gameplay than add half assed aerial stuff like most games do when it's
present. A good middle ground is having the ability to dodge attacks with skills that lift off the ground in a similar vein to how you can dodge monster hunter attacks with positioning, I guess.
I think the problem with aerial combat is that it's very one sided, like air juggles in a fighting game. You are just extending time on how you can beat up a punching bag who can't fight back. Aerial combat would be better iml if you could clash or parry enemies while in the air in real time. Also make it so that you can air dash freely too so that you arent just hovering on the air. I think nier automata did air combat rather well for how shallow the melee movesets were.
It would be great to see someone do a formula similar to Spider-Man Web of Shadows where there was combat on the ground, walls, and air.

It has different bits from other games. This game has a stinger and obligatory judgment cut that mgr lacks. While it doesnt have natural air launch attacks to use in tandem with air combos, it also has a more in depth parrying and dodge system than mgr. While MGR has zandatsu, sb has a devil trigger. Granted zandatsu is infinitely a cooler feature.
MGR had a Devil Trigger in the form of Ripper Mode.

Well the Tachy fight was a bit dissapointing tho. She just keeps letting you wail at her for the first 2/3rd of the fight and only the last 1/3rd of the fight actually presents a challange. A bit bummed about that. Also the bosses in this game in general has some really weird pauses between their attacks that doesn't flow very well.

Not him but mgr feels almost the same from start to finish. The extra weapons you get from beating any of the winds of destruction dont really offer new ways to play. The only worthwhile upgrade is the offensive defense move that allows you to evade.
Granted, mgr was a very rushed and short game so it's understandable.
MGR/ DMC 4 is like 7 hours long which is fine enough for an action game with bearable story and memes. Longer isn't mean better when your only meaningful attack is stinger and parry counter. Oh and the story and characters in SB is unbearable bad. At the end of game i still don't care about any of the characters, all of them so obnoxious and annoying. Yes. In other action games. Parrying and counters just do just that. They arent attached to different movesets. Some give a temporary buff like nier automata's perfect dodge depending on what chips you have installed.

Honestly most action games are pretty shallow when it comes to reactivity. This is why Nioh 2 is so great. It gives you a ton of options for every encounter and move so you can chain a ton of combos and personalize your movesets.

Some deal more damage like max Onslaught. I figure it's for going all out on a boss that's either staggered, knocked down, or being passive.
Some of them move you around for better positioning, deal different amounts of hits, gather more energy for skills, take different times to execute for different size openings, etc. So not really, but kind of if you want to be technical about it. Treat it like you would something vaguely similar to DMC, your goal is specifically to be cool and not just be the loser who either solely uses the meta option or Stinger + Dodge Rolls your way through the game.

yeah it's not bad. A lot more DMC than Bayonetta which is what I was expecting. My biggest problem is getting EVE to get out of the way of things; that first boss people used to show off the gore censorship I kept having problems. The boss would raise its swords above its head and I literally couldn't stop being locked on fast enough to dodge at first.
I'm enjoying the combat and the music is great and reminds of Automata, but I wanna strangle someone every time I try to explore and the game says "lol no let me do that for you through the robot or yellow paint". It's my first yellow paint experience and I hate it already, frick sony

As someone who hasn’t played a lot of Korean games (besides Maple Story.) I really like the art styles in both Stellar Blade and Lies of P. I went into these games expecting a slightly anime-lite aesthetic, or like something that just felt like a blatant rip off of Japanese games. But they both feel distinct. Almost Western, but incredibly focused on beauty and maybe even a bit luxurious (for lack of a better word.) instead of the gritty realism that the West loves so much.
