Cybernator/Assault Suits Valken for the SNES definitely feels like a licensed game based on an early 90s mech space wars anime, only there's no such anime. Awesome, memorable music, great graphics, and fun gameplay.
If you want to play it in English, download the prototype ROM that's out there, as the most notable difference is that it retains the Japanese version's anime portraits which were cut for the final US release.
Cybernator really has a pretty excellent level of detail for an SNES game, especially when you consider the the developer's only prior SFC/SNES game was apparently some Ranma 1/2 game
Also Assault Suits Leynos
[which takes place 10 years after the events of Valken]
It's already a fun mission-based run-and-gun, but the story really grabs you
The Genesis version basically looks like an NES game, and the English localization is missing a lot of detail, so the 2016 remake is the best option to play through. There's also untranslated sequels on Saturn and PS1 (the latter is a Front Mission-style strategy game)
I always thought this game has more stages but it's the same assault on the battleship over and over again. Good thing that Macross game for SFC exists.
If in the same way Arumana no Kiseki is knock-off Indiana Jones and Contra is knock-off Alien/Commando with a little dose of Predator, then yes. There's a frickton of good games heavily inspired by then-popular IPs, while most of the officially licensed tie-ins are downright crappy. The official Dirty Pair game is terrible.
Based as frick. I can't remember if you are the same anon i replied to last time, but that weird cloth like map insert is really rare and often missing from the game. I was finally able to get a complete copy of this game a few years ago. I also managed to grab a sweet guide book. Pic is the back of it. TGL is my favorite NES game!
[...]
Layla is a fun game but it can be pretty hard at times. And if you forget to pick up the second girl by falling down a death pit half way into the game, you're fricked and can't beat the game.
>And if you forget to pick up the second girl by falling down a death pit half way into the game, you're fricked and can't beat the game.
This is some moronic game design right there. Why take away life points and guns when falling into that one pit? Why the second character and all the password disks are REQUIRED to even harm the final boss?
Shame there's no Dirty Pair game, at least as far as I know.
There's a couple of Gall Force games that were exclusive to Japanese computers. None of which look spectacular, but I'd be curious to check them out if they ever get translated.
man I wish hoverbikes were real, and really really fast. Are there any games with big open worlds with fast hover vehicles you can ride across? Or at least one with a mod?

I just tried Layla, only shit that momentum. She's faster than the roadrunner and twice as hard to steer. And what's with that damn tornado, a hidden timer?
If you stand still too long, the tornado will chase you. You can kill it, but it's hard. If i remember correctly, it fills your health a lot when you kill it. So if you are low on health, you can use this to your advantage.
>Space Hunter
That game had serious potential, almost like a rough, simple version of Metroid with jetpack physics, but I'll never know why they decided to have the enemies look like they're swiped from some sort of generic asset pack. Ghosts? Lips? What the frick.
Lots of PC-98 games have some lewd space adventures:
Star Trap (based on the Cream Lemon anime)
Uchuu Kaitou Funny Bee
Bounty Hunter Ludy
Guynarock (by Sogna)

is emulation the only non-ridiculous way of getting into this? my moonrunes are quite poor but i love the aesthetic

That looks great. I have a feeling I may have played it at some point, but I can't quite recall.

The cover for this always looked really cool but I watched Arino play it and it looks hard as hell.

I'm proud to be called your Black person.

I seriously need to watch that some day.

I like Gley Lancer's intro. The story is simple but it helps set the mood. And the rest of the game is a good, solid, albeit standard shmup.
always felt that PSO was the last gasp of this kind of scene in video games
Lagrange Point
Policenauts
Crime Crackers
Cyber Knight I and II
Phantasy Star I-IV

>Shit game
And even worse live-action movie.
But good anime.
It's not a game you bring up in a topic about best Genesis or 16-bit graphics
Based. Great game and anime!
Any games for retro fantasy anime vibes?
I know for a fact there's a game based on that manga, since I downloaded it from a rom site when I was 12, because the name made me laugh.
