Games Where Everything is Timed to the BGM That Aren't Rythm Games

I was in heaven playing No Straight Roads. There has to be other's out there. What games that aren't rhythm games do things like this?

in super mario the music is timed so when you press jump button there will be jump sound.
also if you're running out of time it will be timed so the music changes

    Define "rhythm game"

I think he means a traditional rhythm game where it's just hitting notes in proper timing to a beat map. I believe OP is looking for mixed genre games that are something like an RPG or FPS that also utilize rhythm game mechanics.

Guitar Hero or DDR. Where you're locked into a track and have to specifically press buttons at the right time and that's the only goal.

I guess it's broad if you think it out. Hell a speedrunner could just practice a bunch of inputs for any game to beat it, so every game is essentially a rhythm game. What I'm looking for are music-themed games that allow a lot of freedom but the music is still the central theme. So No Straight Roads and Bullets Per Minute are examples, while Guitar Hero and DDR are specifically rhythm games.

Do you consider Patapon a rhythm game?

Hmm, if multiple inputs are "correct"/ok/actionable in a given situation, it's not rhythm game. So for example in DDR, only pressing the left arrow at the right time is correct, so it's a rhythm game. While in the case for Bullets Per Minute (never played it so I may be wrong on this) you can reload or shoot, so it is not a rhythm game despite having to time it to the music.

So your criteria are games that require you to time mechanics to music where the mechanics being timed are essentially a different genre and not traditionally rhythm game.

              Yes.

But also if the background elements are timed to the BGM that's welcome too.

I believe audiosuft would fit that criteria even though it's obviously rhythm game

Dammit. You know what, the definition I described works well enough for this thread. As long as it's not 300 posts of audiosurf I'm happy with it.

Well, to add, I described the purest form of a rhythm game (you must press this specific button at this specific time or you fail, with no deviation from this rule) so there are going to be games that are not a pure rhythm games that are closer to the genre or farther from the genre.

I don't know what to add to my pure definition to include audiosurf as a rhythm game. So for all intents and purposes, it's not a "pure" rhythm game going forward. Then again, obstacles created by music are also what I am looking for.

Mother 3 has a rhythm minigame in combat for extra hits, its entirely unnecessary to the rest of the game but it rewards you for skill.
All autorunners can arguably qualify for this. My personal favorites would be the Bit.Trip Runner games.
Honestly every fighting game, brawler, beat em up, and everything with framedata wind up becoming freestyle rhythm games when you link things together and you define the rhythm of your inputs

In a lot of 2d platformers you also fall in to the rhythm

Just Shapes and Beats have the bullet patterns based on the song, but you don't have to move to the rhythm or anything.

Killer Instinct 2013 has dynamic music that to an extent even lines up with the attacks landing. Some levels in the modern 2D Rayman games are synced up to music as well.

I think it would be cool to have some kind of real-time action game where you're meant to time your actions to the music but aren't forced to. You have full control of your character but if sync up to the beat you get bonuses. Necrodancer is similar but the idea I had wasn't grid-based.

People are focusing on the wrong stuff. Basically he wants a game like NSR. Which is kind of hard to find.
