I recently got into reading the books and it is very very different.
For one thing at least the first few novels are all about finding excuses for Lina to not just immediately cast Dragon Slave to win every battle. And secondly the humor is extremely different from the anime.
The fish rape scene is one of the funniest things I've ever read.
