Some kind of Italian news story?

      Anonymous

      >chilling there are no other adjectives to define it, is called Rapelay and it could be translated as repeated rape and it is not news but a video game that comes from Japan and in a short time has reached the online sales sites most frequented by boys, it has now arrived even in Italy. You just need to have a computer and download everything from the internet, game and translation.
If until now we wondered how harmful those violent video games were, where the winner is whoever kills the most enemies, well with rapelay we have gone far beyond, the protagonist is a maniac who puts the eyes on a family made up only of women, a mother and two daughters, one of whom is a minor, and it is the latter whom is noticed by the rapist, the game begins at the train station, where it is possible to zoom in on the girl to lift her skirt, and then continues on the train where the harassment and the actual rape begin, those who play Rapelay feel everything about the rape, the violence and the pleas of the victim, and if this wasn't terrifying enough, the icing on the cake comes with the finale, because to win it is not enough to rape as many women as possible but you must also force your victims to have an abortion otherwise you are thrown under the moving train.
      >The game that has been on sale in Japan since 2006, in Europe it has been banned from online sales websites but downloading it from the net is very easy, we tried it too and in just 5 minutes we found 4 different editions, one even allows to modify it to your liking to make the plot, if there ever was a need for it, even more violent.

Because even to this day recording and storing footage is insanely resource intensive. Back in the day you might've had a """broadband""" line with like 500kb/s upload speed and even a shitty 240p video would've taken hours if not days to upload. Plus capture card and consumer screen recording software hadn't gotten to the point it is today, where you have a host of good options to choose from. There's a reason like half of the videos from before 2008 have that "Unregistered Hypercam 2" watermark on them. The people that could've actually gotten good footage from a Gamecube game were either professionals who didn't bother or rare hobbyists. More entry-level videographers often had substandard equipment, thus the low quality of their uploads. But it was youtube and it was free so lower quality was acceptable.

its not "storage" you dumb fricking moron. its bandwidth. youtube/google israelites are greedy homosexuals. quality degrades massively every other year because they keep re-encoding videos and lowering the bitrate. I remember 480p on mobile used to be perfectly watchable in 2018, no macroblocks. these days you need to play 1080p minimum. and god brace you if the video does not use vp9...

The real answer is that Youtube began converting video files into flv and this badly degraded the quality of these videos, which is why you see pixel. Bad compression and conversion.

In fact, there are videos from before 2007 that have better quality then the same video that was uploaded in 2008 for this reason.

there's literally nothing wrong with youtube if you aren't a """""content creator""""" who wants to make money on it

all the b***hing and complaining about youtube comes entirely from being demonetized, which is up to advertisers, not youtube, as to what they're willing to advertise on. Similarly, the """"algorithm"""" for getting lots of views, which doesn't fricking matter if you don't want to make money off of youtube whether you get 10k views organically or 1mil views because the algorithm likes it.

outside of that the only bad thing about youtube right now is that your video can get taken down just because a robot thinks the auto-generated captions say Black person or ISIS or something, even if it clearly didn't if a human listens through

it STILL provides infinite upload space for free, which is unparalleled. But people take that for granted.

its part and parcel of the advertising revenue model. as for the unlimited full quality video storage, viewers take for granted its importance but i dont think creators do - because thats not whats most important for them, the reason creators moan is that youtube is not a good way to generate money, even in a perfect situation where a creator doesnt get demonitized (which happens more often than you think, its a hypothosis, but i believe at least 10 - 20% of video production time likely goes towards making the content youtube ready, less so for quick content like letsplays where theres a little more forgiveness for a fricked up revenue video) but even then hardly any creators generate their living off ads now anyway afaik, patreon and merch is whats keeping a lot of them afloat and thats not even mentioning the fact many of them do it with a secondary employment

in 2006 when you googled for shit like "favorite movies of 2002" you'd get dozens of forum threads with people giving out vastly personalized answers all with individual reasons.
do that now and you get 15 pages of click site articles all with the same top ten list from rottentomatoes or something where each of the top ten items are on a separate page to maximize ad revenue or something probably.

Watching video over the internet in 2006 was a very different thing. Phones didn't do it. And if they did it wasn't done well. Broadband speeds weren't that high yet either. And people generally didn't yet see PCs as a place to watch videos so uploading really high res / high bitrate stuff wasn't seen as necessary.

Also the source material, that is a GameCube intro FMV so at best it had DVD resolution 720x480. There was a fairly low ceiling on how good it'd look even with perfect capture and compression.

      Anonymous

before google bought the platform (there was a very small period of time where this holds true) you had high bandwidth demands, and as such they made a system that could convert everything into an FLV of varying quality. Most of the oldest content is literally FLV because they converted it to this and played that back instead of a full AVI or MP4. if you uploaded the same clip today it wouldnt be great, but would still be higher quality than whatever they converted it to

additionally in that small window, a manual review process existed where all uploads were approved or rejected from the platform. the ONLY reason i ever remember this is because one of my videos got rejected. cant say im surprised it doesnt exist anymore since its so much shit getting added to the platform, but i can say there was once a real person there that approved it all

We're in the 5th generation of wireless technology, faster speeds, more data, more storage. When these videos where uploaded they would take someone with average wifi like 2 minutes to load and it buffer every 10 seconds. Youtube didnt even have a hd option back then. The equivilent for us right now would be streaming a 32k video. Its so ludicris nobody even thinks about the posibility. On top of the fact that unlimited wifi was unheard of so everyone browsed the internet in slow rations otherwise their bill would be extremely high.

      Anonymous

Lots of people had slow/limited internet and storage was expensive so they recorded/uploaded in higher quality. YouTube destroyed most older video's quality with re-encoding too, probably to save on storage space themselves.

I don't think it's very coomer, mostly outfits and dances.
But then, there were things like dance with rogues for Neverwinter Nights, so maybe Morrowindgays were jerking off back then already.

Incredible on how morrowind went from cool and immersive comfy shit like this to reddit lorehomosexualry ruled by kirkbride's wife.

What is worse is that most of the lorrehomosexualry gays reeks of fanfiction from people who never played it at all and thinks it mut be muh alien shit, when people back then were playing the game like that video there.

it is kinda becoming a coincidente that all games who abandoned their classic LOTR roots are turning into shit.

There is a huge abundance of information and other content on the internet today that just didnt exist back then. Like an unbelievable amount of information.
Itll be impossible for someone who didnt have internet in the early 00s to fully realize was it was actually like.

I remember asking a question about a small snowblower engine years ago, on just a random tractor forum. The answers I got were no help, some were in fact wrong, and it was really hard to find that particular information if it was there. Once click on youtube today would give me that info.
Another example was I got a guitar at a garage sale, had a weird sustainer built in that didnt work.
I asked on 3-4 guitar forums, nobody had ever heard of the guitar and couldnt help me.
I figured it out on my own months later.

Today there are a ton of people selling the same exact guitar, its part, there are youtube videos on it. One google search away. From my phone thats in my pocket everywhere I go.

Its just incredible how different it was.

All the gibe moni pl0x memes back in the day were the harbinger of the destruction of the internet. Now the place is full of ignorant third world savages and vapid c**ts on their phones.

Social media trivialized Internet interactions. I remember my local imageboard was literally a wasteland of unmoderated spam (which is by itself outrageous by today's standards) but in the midst of it you could have profound discussions with people. There are not standards to be had now, you assume everyone you talk to is clinically moronic or just up to hurt you, everyone has an identity label and everyone is behind layers of irony. And people used to at least lament negative trends in society and the Internet and try to pull themselves out of them. Now there's only bitterness because things only get worse. I feel nothing towards anything on the net.

There are homosexuals who've written entire personal wikis where they whine about how much worse the internet is now, but one thing I don't see mentioned often enough is the apparent underlying REASON for someone to create content.
In the past, you'd post because either:
      • You wanted to entertain or inform others.
      • You had a random unfiltered brain fart and nobody is there to tell you 'no'.
The former gave us good stuff that's fun to browse through. The second gave us a sense of genuineness and honesty.
Today people seem to post mostly to entertain THEMSELVES. It's a way of projecting your ego onto the world, to leave a mark in some way, to receive acknowledgement (upvotes, likes, views, (You)s, etc.).
It's not universal, but generally speaking people aren't really posting for the sake of others' enjoyment. Things feel plastic and selfish.

It's just statistics, honestly. Computers used to be an IQ check, and the internet was generally populated by hobbyists. Now, think about real-life. How often do you meet these people with sparks in their eyes that want to create, learn, or do things? The unfortunate truth is that the majority of the population is dull and lifeless, and they are a VAST majority compared to the old-school hobby autists that used to produce the majority of the internet's content.

some dipshit kid told me about this series in elementary school and it's how I got hooked on Youtube. I'd watch it through the Wii web browser on a borderline dial-up connection and I loved every minute of it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yx8KDImBNgA

It was a bit before my time (regular access to high speed internet wasn't available to me until about 2012), but I imagine that the majority of people didn't know how bad it would get. It's just how it is, taking the present for granted and complaining about the small stuff of the day, it's probably happening to me right now but that's just the way it is. I'm sure that some man-made horror beyond my comprehension will strike sometime within the next decade and I'll be nostalgic for this era somehow.

God, I miss the positivity the internet used to have.

it's strange, because I don't think the internet was really *more* positive in the past on a wholesale level, it was just more intimate and personal. not everyone had broadband yet, and smartphones weren't even a thing until more than halfway through the 00s, so if you were posting about something on a space on the internet, chances are you were a big enthusiast surrounded by other big enthusiasts. it's easy to be a casual fan these days, chasing clout by stating the obvious and whatnot but you couldn't do that in the past if you wanted attention, or at least positive feedback. I think that's what people miss the most about the old internet, that feeling of being in your own little corner of the universe with people who liked the same thing(s) you did, and part of why people still cling to Ganker in 2022, because it's arguably the only place left that remotely resembles that old nature of the internet.

        >it was just more intimate and personal
The general precaution we were all taught and learned was to never post personal details online for any reason, not even personal pictures. It enabled people to really engage in their interests without risking being embarrassed or harmed by internet stalkers IRL.

      >its because of smart phones
You stupid fricks are so old and out of touch its incredibly. Always interesting to see the mind of 30 year old men who think they're still 20.

Most of you b***hing about smart phones first gained access to the internet when you didn't even have hair on your balls and you dare complain that the internet is too popular now? The internet didn't get more popular in the sense that 40-50 year olds are now using it the same way you do. No, the internet got more popular merely because more and more time has gone by with newer and newer children incorporating the internet into their life as their life.

There are homosexuals on Ganker right now born in 2008, they don't even remember 9/11. They grew up exactly the same way you did. Only difference between the internet then and now aside from corporate interest is the fact that its filled with people younger then you and this trend will continue until you die.

You were the first generation to grow up with the internet. it was a special time but you will not be the last. Finding a 50 year old on the net 20 years ago was unheard of. So was finding a 40 year old. Now all you gays are 40.

Depends on which circles you were looking in. There were plenty of oldgays on the various tabletop RPG forums, back in the day. Hell, Gygax himself posted every now and then on ENworld even in the early 2000s right before he died.

There's an amount of nostalgia but the internet was legitimately better, if you consider niche being better (I unironically do).
What imo killed the internet was the abnility to make major money (by extension corporations and extreme fame, all intertwined) and the 2016 USA election. Money creates a strong drive to appeal broadly and the election was so divisive and at the perfect time to permanently frick conversation. Being able to earn money took the soul out of content and how divisive the election was completely ruined conversation. This is obviously highly reductive but I think greed is essentially what ruined the internet.

It's a damn shame only one of the DS titles ended up getting ported over, Starfy is the best platforming game to this day. It wouldn't be so bad if the translation efforts wouldn't fall apart so much.

Dislikes were hidden because joe biden, bill gates and anythony fauci videos kept getting downvoted into oblivion. The majority of youtube users hated that they took them away. Purely sweating israelites.

I don't understand why no one has stepped up and made a real competitor yet since they have been hell bent on sabotaging it for over a decade now. The closest thing by a mile is bing but its just not close at all even after google has been lobotomized a hundred times.

        Anonymous

Not only that, but Google doesn't actually index shit the same way they used to. Did you know that google lies about how many pages of results there is? Try going past page 3 sometime. Chances are it drops the facade and tells you there aren't any more results.
Google is basically just DMOZ at this point.

To be fair, politics was mostly shitting on bush and the iraq war. I don't think "politics" would yield anything regardless because it wasn't the go-to term for political events on the net at the time. Try specific things like politician names or world events.

frick, this thread is making me feel like absolute shit.
why must everything feel so plastic these days? nothing has any soul. even offline, people can't help but to constantly jerk off their own egos.

I know some of you zoomers are having trouble understanding what we're talking about, but it really WAS much better back then. even if some of us in our late 20s aren't much older than you, we literally made some sort of cut off. the generational division is so apparent.

life was so much more calm back then. literally nobody who was considered half sane was shoehorning their so-called political ideologies as their identity.
the past 9 or so years especially, people have become so much more tense and irritable. most people can't go beyond surface level conversation.

social media and smartphones were a big part of this decline, like many anons have mentioned, but holy frick, shit is so much more worse than that, and everyone is numb. it's not healthy for six out of every ten odd girls to be making only fans the second they turn 18. it's ruining them. it's not healthy for so many people to be striving for an unobtainable perfection based lifestyle on the illusions they see people supposably living on these social media sites. and this rampant life hating nihilism and lust for irony brought to the extreme is only going to dig the hole even deeper.
people don't even look at each other are real anymore.

does it sting for anyone else when they see these old videos and realize that 2006 really was that long ago? iirc dvds only became common around 2000 and quite a lot of people still used vcrs. internet penetration wasn't all that great yet. dedicated camera devices were much better than what you could record on phones.
whenever i realize that 16 years went by in the blink of an eye it feels like i'm losing my breath.

Yeah? What's fun about it? You really think you could live out those memories for the rest of your life? If you had the chance to go back to those "better days" it wouldn't leave the same impression on you. And before you go

Wrong. I had NetZero dial-up internet at home or I had to bike to the local library to play flash games. I've participated in forums and I've been around for the cultural boom of MySpace. I remember things like Halolz and I remember how YouTube used to let you customize your profile with a background and it's old look. I remember using my flip phone by setting it on a chair and then recording my shitty gameplay of Guitar Hero. I remember participating in smashboards when it was called smash world forums. I remember scorehero. I remember signing up to niconicodouga because carmalladansen or levan polka. I even remember when I first came across this website and how somehow I am still fricking here.

I've spent most of my life on the internet. I couldn't have expected the rest of the world to catch up but maybe some of you feel bitter towards it. Like the internet was something YOU discovered and then people came and ruined it.

Not a larp. You could probably ask me something about "old internet" and I could give an answer. You know those wannabe machinima mario 64 channels? Where they used Sony Vegas and mario recolors? Yeah I tried to make one of those and was actually friends with some of the creators.

No and that's the point I'm trying to make. All this shit I'm talking about are just memories. It's not healthy and it's escapism. I'm pretty much just musing about garbage.

There's something oddly depressing about coming across vlogs of people just fooling around with friends/family.
Then you check out their channel - they've only got a few other videos of the same style. Then... that's it, they're gone. Dead? Living large?

It's like the boltzmann brains on the internet. Just random snapshots of someone's life years ago in the endless void of content.

What I miss are the unique websites that used to exist back then, people had websites with little games they made or just little oddities. Now everything is relegated to a handful of big sites and most of the unique and weird ones are gone now. Plus it's impossible to search anything with google nowadays.
