Everyone is pissed that the English voice actor for Nahobino is nonbinary-identifying and screech "troony" as if the main character's design wasn't enough reason for them to ape out already. In reality, it's actually a pretty bad casting choice that was probably done to pander to the Twitter moron audience, and they should have chosen someone who was closer to the deeper Japanese voice of Nahobino instead of the fricking voice of Shinji.
I was actually on the fence about this game because, the game itself looks great to me but I'm so completely out off by having to play as that god awful character design. I didn't know about the voice actor shit at all until I read your post, I never even considered how this character would actually sound. If they gave it a soft feminine girly voice fricking on top of everything else then frick it, they don't need my money. I don't even feel comfortable referring to that character as a him because they literally just made a girl anime character and called it a guy. But, the voice on top of that?! Game can eat shit, frick Japanese people for doing this shit in their games lately. Either let me have some control over the appearance of the character or give me multiple options. I'd happily just play as an actual female character, the way Pokemon or fire emblem let's you choose, if the "male" character is going to look and sound like a troony.

I just don't understand why the character design had to be so polarizing. There's no way they gained more interested people in the game than they lost with making "him" look and sound like that.
Even if you're a defender of the design personally, we can argue back and forth about it all day but when it really comes down to it, I just don't understand. They went out of their way to turn a decent subsection of people off their game seemingly for no reason. They really didn't need to make the character that way.
It was most likely done to serve a thematic purpose, such as referencing Hindu myth(among others) referring to divinity as being androgeny. Consider that it is also a double edged sword because there are also myths in alchemy where a male and female half and half body is used for alchemical evil as well. I would assume that with how SMT leans into the occult that it has more to do with that than anything else. That and Doi and the art team probably wanted to have a unique cape like feature and long hair is decently unique in that way.
Atlus, especially Team Manics, doesn’t care about doing things that might put people off a game. SMT’s very premise already puts a lot of people off; its difficulty traditionally has put people off; its DLC practices put people off; etc etc. a MC looking androgynous is just a minor new thing to potentially add to the bucket (I say “potentially” because I don’t actually know if people outside of a subset of Ganker are put off by the design)
These SMT threads, and the reaction Ganker has had to this game makes it all the more obvious why JPN only games like Mother 3 will never come out over here.
