In my opinion the levels look way uglier, the level design is less imaginative despite being less tedious, the voices are worse, and some missions can be annoying. Really it's just a matter of taste between the two games.
I was really put off by the gameplay of Sonic Heroes enough that I did finish it, but never bought it. I bought Shadow the Hedgehog and I enjoyed it a lot more. The physics felt similar but I didn't like the character switching and the weapons in shadow were simply more fun to use.
Heroes has some really amazing art-direction. The levels are BEAUTIFUL and a prime example of PS2 SOVL graphics. Fantastic looking levels. Shadow has a lot more dreary, bleak and bland levels.
This. I think that was the first time since the PS1 MMX games that I experienced a series on the same system(s) looking worse in a latest entry than its previous entry.

No. Sonic in 3D plays like dogshit, so it makes sense when the best aspects of the games are things like the chao garden and other ways to play the game.
I love how the partners were mostly all controllable by p2, intentionally having Maria skip into a pit into the atmosphere is super amusing.

Oh yeah, almost every Hero partner can. Doom's Eye and Eggman's monitor don't.

Oh, no every character has either a basic attack or nothing. Charmy floats and iirc has a charging attack, Maria does nothing.

Rom, anon, rom. If you have a good phone or a tablet or a PC/toaster built in the last decade then Dolphin is where it's at. PS2 version of Shadow is okay but the load times are annoying, unlike Heroes where the PS2 version is SADX/06 levels of unplayable.

A very flawed game, but unironically my favorite sonic game, so much soul, cool missions, the 2nd player can use almost any of the followers and amazing music, it's broken as frick but man i can't say I didnt have any fun.
It's flawed, particularly when it comes to progression, but I will forever maintain that it's by far and away the best of the Heroes/Shadow/06 saga. It's a decent 3d run-n-gun. I'm glad to see that others are starting to realize it's not at all this unplayable piece of shit like it was said to be
