Everyone suddenly hates helicopters because of Kobe. And it's not fair
Can we post some games were that showcase how cool they are?

Played the shit out of pic related as a kid, never knew it had a commie version of it.
It says "The sequel to Soviet Strike" right on the cover.
Remember when you saw "Electronic Arts" on the box and you just knew it was gonna be fun? Man. Shame Electronic Arts isn't a thing anymore.
They were gonna make Future Strike but that turned into future cop LAPD
Because in most games Helicopters are kind of anti-fun. Hard counter tanks and require special equipment to take down. The sniper rifle of vehicles.
>The sniper rifle of vehicles.
I'd say that Helicopters are more like... the grenade launcher of vehicles. They're notably annoying because they can hide somewhere just over a hill in the distance and dump explosions at you, but they are far easier to take down, even with conventional arms or light vehicle weapons. You didn't really need specialized equipment just to counter them; just a good shot with a good amount of the game's aresneal.
The sniper rifle of vehicles will always be jets, especially if they get to restock bombs as much as they want. Virtually no combined arms games actually give infantry nor ground vehicles the actual firepower to take planes down. The jet will zoom in at low altitude, dump their payload and be out behind the nearest hill before any Stinger missile can lock on, before any gunfire will even scratch them or any dedicated anti-air weapon can actually shoot them down. The only thing to counter them is another jet.
Map design always has to cater so hard to jets that it massively detracts from all other aspects of a combined arms game. Look at BF Bad Company 2, the only BF that was helicopters-only, and see how much better all of the maps and overall infantry-vs-vehicle balance was, even when the soldiers didn't have anything like a seeking missile (they had to snipe the chopper with that targeting beacon pistol if they wanted a lock).
a few suggestions:
Enemy Engaged series Apache Havoc and Comanche Hokum (PC)
Apache Air Attack (multiplat PC/PS3)
Take On Helicopters (Civil heli sim from ARMA developers) (PC)
DCS World heli modules: Ka-50 Black Shark, UH-1 Huey, Mi-8, Sa-32 gazelle, and maybe sometime this year OH-58D Kiowa (PC)
That Black Shark. Gimme that
Strike games on Genesis are fricking fun.
>You will never fight dirty capitalists in Korea or the muhahideen in Afghanistan for the USSR
But seriously it is a bummer that modern sims lack in the story department. It's a rare thing to even have campaigns these days.
I feel like helicopters have been largely overlooked in video games. There are so many games dedicated to planes but I can't think of any past the PS1 era to be dedicated to helicopters. I always thought helicopters were much cooler machines than planes, don't know why. I know this is a thread meant to poke fun at Kobe's death but I don't give a shit. I hope someone posts some good helicopter games.
>inb4 someone asks why helicopters are so unsafe
Helicopters are actually pretty safe. You can land a helicopter safely eve if its engine goes out mid-flight. Check this shit out:
The vast majority of helicopter crashes happen due to pilot error.
>he doesn't do this while up higher in the air
>cuts from slow descent to near the ground to "skid"
I mean, that's cool and all but I don't 100% believe it.
>pilot errors are the cause
Same with planes. Doesn't means that helicopters are suddenly safer than planes like this dude claims because even his explanation shows the problem: You have to "thread the needle" to land safely in a helicopter while there is more "margin of error" in a jet that is properly at cruising alt.
Thunder Wolves is rad for a quick arcade helicopter fighter.
Despite the multiplayer-focus, I'm looking forward to Commanche 2020.
Any trailers? Or gameplay?
Some background video showing off random helicopter combat and the indoors hover-drone element during an interview. The multiplayer seems to be more based around sequential mission objectives the likes of Enemy Territory.
How's KA-52 Team Alligator? I pirated it in 2001 but for some reason never played beyond the first tutorial missions. The only thing I remember is your russian instructor talking about 'vaypoints'.
Army Men Air Combat
love this game
Fricking loved this shit on my amiga600. God I miss being _8 again.
Ace Combat: Assault Horizon.
This is a genre of game that just stopped being made suddenly. Why?
People hate helicopters but I'd like a game like AC featuring them
Who here played Comanche?
Thunderhawk: Operation Phoenix for PS2 was pretty fun. From like 2001.
Soviet Strike and Nuclear Strike were my fav of the series. Desert and Jungle are classics and I still enjoyed Urban Strike (minus the on foot stuff)
Soviet and Nuclear strike are so fricking kino. I replayed Soviet last year and it still holds up, it's a shame my copy of Nuclear was a pirate one so i couldn't replay it. The acting in these games is so good.
I also played a Comanche game but it was not nearly as memorable. Also, it's not helicopters but Eagle One: Harrier Attack for the PSX is also great, and of course there's also G-police which is kinda future helicopters and pure kino as well.
Holy shit my man I didnt know anyone else played Harrier.
Someone needs to make a game like Zeewolf 1&2. It's basically a Strike game meets Virus/Zarch.
Urban/Jungle/Desert Strike are the best chopper games ever made.
Thanks for reminding me of these games. Too bad there are no heli action games nowadays except for the upcoming "Comanche". I remember there were some shitty helicopter levels in Ace Combat: Assault Horizon, if those were done well and in an other game, it would've been great.
Got Soviet Strike from a video game magazine in my childhood. Me and my brother had a bunch of fun with that. Only recently I remembered that game and its name.
Apache Air Assault was the last good arcade/sim helicopter combat game
Choplifter HD
Also Urban Strike:
Thunderhawk 2: Firestorm
Name a better helicopter game than G-Police: Weapons of Justice or Warhawk.
I'll wait.

Rising Storm 2: Vietnam

battlefield 3 and 4 fricked up helicopters because they made them impossible to shoot down with a rifle leading to them basically just mowing down infantry in a lot of maps.
it's why I consider Rising Storm 2 to have the better helicopters
BF 3 had the best helicopters in the series
>HUR HOW COME I CAN'T PEW CHOP WITH PISTOL
>Fond memories of shooting pilots through the canopy with that sniper rifle in BF2
Why did you have to bring that back? Battlefield will never be this good again.
BC2: Vietnam proves the problem with small arms fire, especially on PC: They'd be down in five seconds otherwise.
3/4's helicopters are fine. Just use a Stinger/IGLA like a homosexual.
>Hurr don't want to do that
>Rising Storm 2 is better
No it isn't, not with that that fricking horrible "MUH REALISM"-like control scheme for them and not being able to move folks easily to where they're nothing but a spawning jerking off Kobe trap.
Out of my way, zoomers. Choplifter up in this MUTHA.
Heliborne (Too bad it requires you to play Multiplayer in order to unlock new helis. Seemed like a perfect game, though a bit janky. )
or Red Zone. Complete with insane Jesper Kyd soundtrack.

arma is ok
Apache Longbow is one of the first PC games I've played.
Fond memories and good times.
Felt nice to pilot in FC5
Comanche Gold
I've played that one a whole lot too.
Also there was another game with an apache which had some spectacular damage models for that time, forgot the name sadly.
try Helicops or Viper (PS1)
Comanche IV
Nuclear Strike
G-Police (future helicopter)
Apache Air Assault
Apocalypse
I always liked Hinds more than Apaches
I like Hinds as adversaries to shoot down
Yeah cause they're fat and thicc
I like Huey and Chinook.
Someone's gotta transport stuff. Also door gunners.
Hind was made to do both attac and deliver but the Ivans realized how dumb the idea was. Shame cause it made for a cool aesthetic
Helicopters are based
