      I agree with this.
Heck, OP's post is weird. I feel like atmopshere and art design isnt usually good in euro games.

this game only ever got popular because DUDE LSD

I think most of us didnt know about drugs when we first encountered this games. I was like 5 when I first played it (no i didnt beat it at 5), and considering how much it sold, safe to say most of us encountered it as kids

The reason you had the game is because your parents were druggies

Ecco was popular because it was cool, because UNDERWATER and ALIENS.

Western devs just seemed to lack the sense to develop games with good "play feel", so to speak. Japanese understood this better.
I love Ecco though, yeah gameplay is jank and most of the level design is too, frick WTTM, but I love it, wish more levels were like the Sega CD exclusive action levels instead of the maze ones that's most of the game.

These games were brutal to navigate around. Leaping into the air was broken. Overall, an overhyped Flipper ripoff with some sort of minor cult following.

    You mean Aladdin/Pifall/Mickey Mania.

      >Aladdin
Aladdin played great, this is just Capcom/SNES fans trying to force the idea that their inferior version isn't bad in comparison, despite it just being a forgettable and braindead platformer without a cool sword and challenge to make it actually memorable, so you can suck my balls.

Level design and gameplay mechanics are much better in the SNES game. The attack and jump animations in the Sega one are too long: game is a looker, though.

I disagree, while level design and mechanics are both excellent there, Virgin's level design had a much better challenge to it alongside the fun, I feel that Capcom's was fun, but too simple and not very memorable because of it, I didn't have to go through many playthroughs to learn and get better before I finished it, though I get that can just be personal preference. Also, as for the mechanics, I like the jumping and gliding, but a swords is just much cooler and fun to use than both, but then again I suppose that's personal, I never felt that the animations were too long.

I just feel that Virgin's version gave what most of us wanted as kids, something that felt like we're playing the film, since it looks just like it, and that feels cool, so the sword got us covered on there. I also love the more arcade styled difficulty, but I guess Capcom being easier can be appealing still.

          >t. grew up with the Sega one, it being the only one of these two that I've seen the ending of
How come? I mean, the Capcom one was so easy in comparison, it even has a password system so you don't have to finish it in a single sitting, why did you never get to the end despite all of that?

The gameplay isn't even jank, it's just boring. 70% of it is just slowly trudging through underwater gaves trying not to get hit by spikes and spamming the damage sonar to kill crabs that don't have a single frame of animation before they rush you down.
Oh, and losing precious lifespan getting through water currents, because they're fricking everywhere.

Because Europeans can't into game design. Why do you think so many of them talk about muh Amiga? They jerk off to the graphics for 5 minutes before talking about how amazing European computers were for the next 9 hours.

Strongly disagree. Ecco is super fun to control once you get used to the game. I would often just jump around and forget about my main goal for a few seconds.
