What's not to hate
There is a schizo narrative that HL2 follows a vastly different design philosophy than the original, that HL1 is just raw level design and action and HL2 is just tech demos and cinematics. This is of course insane, and anyone who claims this should be institutionalized and given an under the table lobotomy.
Zoomers are so broken from AAA devs constantly doing the same things over and over that anything which tried to advance the genre is seen as a tech demo.
They don't even realize that HL1 simply having a narrative implemented into the game beyond the instruction manual was the parallel to HL2's physics engine as its advancement to the genre.

You cannot seriously believe that when the entire first chapter of Half-Life is dedicated entirely to being a literal train ride through a series of tech demos.
>game intro is cinematic
Makes sense if you think of it that way, it's the opening cutscene. Only issue is needing to use the console to skip it unlike a cutscene in most other games that are easily skipped with a button press.
>constant handcrafted scenarios that are (infamously) playtested >hl2 is just a tech demo hurrrr
just because you don't like something doesn't mean you can just throw whatever nonsense at it and have it make sense.
I don't get it. Why is it one or the other with these people. I like HL2 and I also like HL1. I don't get the needing to hate something in order to like something else mentality.
I played it when it was released on it's simply too long for what it offers. The first and last chapters are the best ones, the rest is simply meh.
I liked the episodes more, it's a shame we never got the third.
Felt like 1/3rd of the game is a showcase of the engine. 1/3rd is actually fun and wowed me. Shooting feels a bit off. I only shit on it because of that 1/3rd that's an awful showcase that aged like shit. That and I enjoyed HL1 more.
game is otherwise cool but the weapons are mostly some of the boringest limpest dogshit in the entire genre. which is weird because it has the coolest and most impactfulest comfy kino badass crossbow ive ever seen in anything
I don't like HL2 as much as HL1, but I've still replayed HL2 a couple times and enjoyed it. The physics are still fun and it gives you a lot of explosive barrels to play with. I would probably like the game more if it had no traditional guns at all and was Physics Fight: The Game (yes I know there's that Ravenholm Achievement but I want purity).
I agree with this anon, Black Mesa Research Facility is what makes HL1 so good. Industrial environments, tons of catwalks and big cavernous rooms, hazardous waste everywhere, lots of pipes and vents and platforming, and it feels big enough that you could have five games down there and not run out of ideas. Who knows what crazy experiments and equipment we didn't see.
Boomer here: It started the whole "story focuser shooter" bs we hate today. It was cool on release because it was new, but today? Everything that made it special isnt that special anymore
It was complete shit. And to be honest? Half-Life 1 is a million times better. I never played it before, but I am playing it now since Gabe gave it for free. I don't understand how they fricked it up. HL2 has too much boring bullshit puzzles and water levels. Yes, I have to post this pic since you homosexuals will cry about it and accuse me for being a zoomie

Not a zoomer. Played it around the time it came out on my very much non-gaming laptop with a shit framerate. Played it again later a few times on better machines that could actually handle it.
Every now and then, I get the urge to replay it. Then I remember the awful vehicle sections, the repeating seesaw puzzles, and the devs all but forcing their gimmick gun on to you in parts.
HL1 is better.
Its a tech demo with little substance that only stands up as a sequel. Game was beautiful for 2004 but the game has aged like milk if you aren't still waiting for the day that Freeman and G-Man have a fateful face-off
The environment of HL1 was the coolest thing when I was a kid. I wanted to go to Black Mesa and be a physicist. HL2 inspired no such thing. It was just a game.
it's very easy for someone with the Ganker mindset to rip it.weak gunplay, mediocre enemy AI, sometimes heavyhanded cinematic storytelling, a few eyeroll worthy physics segments. personally while I acknowledge those flaws I very much enjoy the design mentality of the game, it has a creative energy that I find very rare in the ho hum shooters that followed. people sneer at its gimmicks but I struggle to think of many shooters with the capacity to match them. usually you get something akin to cod just a slightly different circumstance to shoot people, glorified turret segments.
I think you are right that people are too hard on HL2 these days, but it seems like everyone has at least 25% of the game that they don't really like (or 50% if you hate vehicles I guess). If I could get a trimmed-down edition that only has my favorite chapters I would like it a lot more.
>weak gunplay, mediocre enemy AI
mostly this, the end of the game turns into endless gunfights and turret defense until you get the upgraded gravity gun, then physics is fun again.
It's more obvious flaws are definitely part of the problem but really I think there's something fundamentally "wrong" with the way it all fits together. And it's something I've seen in other shooters that tried to copy HL2 well (the resistance series is a pretty good example). The best way I can it explain it is as a problem with flow and progression. Nothing/very little is completely unfun to play through but so much of the experience feels like doing the same things over and over again while a story that is both overly simplistic and overly complex unfolds around you with seemingly little input from the player.
>but so much of the experience feels like doing the same things over and over again
you need to elaborate this point and explain because the surface level reality of hl2 in spite of perhaps a limited enemy roster is constant variety and gimmicks.
I guess the best way to put it would be that there a very few moments that feel special. Almost everything you do once you will do again. And there's not much sense of escalating tension or player impact, at least compared to 1. I see 2 as being subtle to a fault compared to how bombastic 1 could be.
>And there's not much sense of escalating tension
the helicopter stalking you through the boat journey and ending with a climactic showdown? the first time you encounter the carpetbombing attack was a classic oh shit moment for me.
The helicopter sequence is definitely good but nothing else in the base game really comes close to that fight.

I guess I kind of see your criticism in the final fight of city 17, I was never really that crazy about it compared to the journey of the first 2/3rds of the game. but hl2 lacking tension isn't something that connects with me very well. ravenholm and nova prospect have a very strong sense of ratcheting tension to me in addition to the boat ride.

I mostly like both of those segments (the beach assault is probably the best moment in hl2) but every time I play them I feel like they're missing something. Ravenholm goes on too long and could have used other enemy types and more set dressing. NP falls flat on its face as soon as you enter the prison and dosen't really pick up again untill the end. And again there's just this constant feeling for me that I'm just along for the ride in all these situations, like I'm not actually doing anything at all or accomplishing anything. There never feels like there's a looming threat or something actually out to get me. I'm just going places and shooting things.
I'm not exactly a zoomer but compared to other boomer shooters like quake or unreal, or even modern revivals of boomer shooters like dusk or Doom eternal, it just isnt that fun.
half life 1 doesn't get enough criticism for how absolutely pathetic the alien roster is for the majority of the run. you mow them down without resistance save a few brief one off setpieces and the very end of black mesa.
Because HL1 isn't an alien invasion. It's mostly innocent fauna being yeeted into Earth at random. Your only true enemies are the soldiers and aliens who have been previously weaponized by human or combine experimentation.
The mega aliens like the giant claws you kill with a rocket or the boss alien you need to kill with the electric generators fulfill the role you're talking about. Having to mow down some harmless frogs or slave class aliens who are just defending themselves is the point, not an oversight.

not sure if the leeches are supposed to be alien leeches or just cartoonish normal leeches so I didn't count them
Then of course there are beta monsters that didn't make the cut like Mr. Friendly and chumtoad.
On top of that you have the human enemies as well, and who is to say the origin of the black ops assassins?
Now look at HL2. What did they even have? the headcrabs, the ceiling mouth, the antlions, the strider, vortigaunts but you don't fight them................see what i mean
oh wait for some reason I didn't read 2 in that. Okay for comparisons...
normal headcrabs
poison headcrabs
fast headcrabs
2 types of combine soldier
ravagers
brain slug things
striders
alien gunships
antlions
zombies of various types
and I think that is it? not counting metro police because human
not ravager, stalker. can you tell I didn't play 2 nearly as much as I did 1?
Even if combine soldiers are the marines of HL2 they are still aliens (which may be why they suck more)
I count the headcrab varieties because I was willing to count gonarch and zombies in the first list, which on that note maybe I should have included the mini headcrabs from the gonarch in the first list too?
Also iirc Icthyusaur is the don't go out of bounds in water monster in 2, which is less a monster and more a game mechanic. I honestly didn't even care to test this out when it came out.
Also glowy tentacle beta monster that we never got to fight

I guess arguable since the combine are the not-borg of the Half-Life universe
the alien roster is good
theres not very many aliens but they are fun to fight.
is it some extremely difficult dark souls tier experience with a hundred different enemies? no. but soldiers, vortigaunts, and headcrabs are kino enough to carry almost the entire game
I can't believe I played Alyx for the first time recently and NOBODY spoiled the ending for me. It's a pretty big tweest and tees up a potential episode 3
while I understand why they did it, and epistle 3 being so dour was probably one of the reasons why it never got made, I really, really hate (backwards) time travel handwaves. just kind of immediately sucks the enthusiasm out of me, nothing matters. alyx and the gang immediately coming to the conclusion that it must be gordon housed in the supermax prison was a fun little joke though.
it's funny how much some people see the retcon as a slap in the face because valve absolutely intended it to be a meta apology for the episode 2 cliffhanger.
> And then Alyx's dad dies horribly at the hands of an alien slug monster. The end. > Awww are you crying?
10 years later > Oh just kidding he lived and goes with you. > Isn't that great? > Why do you look so angry? > What do you mean you want me to undo your trauma? > Don't you still care about going to the Borealis? You might meet GladOS! Wubba dub dub? > St...stay back!
it's not fun, i do recognize how compared to other games from the same era it had mindblowing physics and even graphics, but the world just feels empty and souless compared to other titles and you wouldn't play it nowadays for any reason other than to see what the hype around it is all about, because starting and finishing it feels like a chore
t. zoomer who played it first at 10 years old and then again at 20 last year
>but the world just feels empty and souless
really unfair criticism? even with the dystopian sci-fi setting valve tries to put in levity wherever they can.
what do you mean unfair criticism? i'm just stating one of the things that makes the game unappealing to me, a zoomie
like i said, i can see it as a good game for what it was when launched, but i can't have fun playing it
People pick the stupidest shit to complain about. HL1 is better because it has more aliens and weapons? Are you 12 years old? That's the least important part of a Half Life game. Go play Serious Sam if you want dozens of different aliens to fight. The aliens in HL1 are barely even a threat and half the weapon roster is useless. The scanner bot that gets used to flash you is more dangerous than the aliens in HL1 but somehow that just doesn't count as an enemy? What matters is pacing, variety, setpieces, level design, gunplay, encounter design, immersion, storytelling, all things that HL2 exceeds at.
It has ragolls and the shotgun and revolver are really good. The ar2 is beefy, looks cool, and disintegrate people with its altfire. You can stick people to walls with a crossbow. What's the fricking problem? At the least its on par with HL1, if not better.
I replayed all of the HL games last year and HL2 was definitely the biggest slog. Most guns feel like shit, the vast majority of the enemies is humanoid dudes and the vehicle sections just drag because the game pulls a figurative handbrake every 5 minutes to force a puzzle on you. EP2 was actually a lot better than I remembered. Hunters are really fun, the set pieces are cool and their length is just right. I really wish the base game was more like it.
It's not okay, it's been fricked since 2013 with their Steampipe update and Valve never bothered to fix it. The fact that Valve hid it from the store, is just the coup de grace of it. I'm aware that there are modders trying to do genuine fix of it on Moddb, you can check that out if you really want to.
Zoomer here, honestly I enjoyed it. I would've preferred if you got to play as a nude man, and got to chase other nude men around, but I get the vibe they were going for
Everyone that's not a steamcuck hates it, the game is garbage.

it's straight ripping the playbook decades later

it's not fun, i do recognize how compared to other games from the same era it had mindblowing physics and even graphics, but the world just feels empty and souless compared to other titles and you wouldn't play it nowadays for any reason other than to see what the hype around it is all about, because starting and finishing it feels like a chore
t. zoomer who played it first at 10 years old and then again at 20 last year
>but the world just feels empty and souless
really unfair criticism? even with the dystopian sci-fi setting valve tries to put in levity wherever they can.
what do you mean unfair criticism? i'm just stating one of the things that makes the game unappealing to me, a zoomie
like i said, i can see it as a good game for what it was when launched, but i can't have fun playing it
obviously a game about a terrifying alien collective sucking the life out of a planet is going to have themes that involve emptiness and soullessness.
>but the world just feels empty and souless compared to other titles
That's the point.
The same zoomies will praise if it was released for free.
What matters is pacing, variety, setpieces, level design, gunplay, encounter design, immersion, storytelling, all things that HL2 exceeds at.
>gunplay
you're gonna need to defend this because the default appraisal of 2's gunplay is that it's merely ok.
All hl games are good.
Stop forcing this division.
It's one guy

What a pathetic autistic homosexual.
>quake 2
>better than HL
I like Q2 but come the frick on.
HL2 good.
If you disagree you are a troony
Proof that zoomers hate it?
You could convince the posters on this board to eat dog shit out of contrarianism.
Is the Source port of HL1 okay to play? Anything I can add on it to make it better?
It's not okay, it's been fricked since 2013 with their Steampipe update and Valve never bothered to fix it. The fact that Valve hid it from the store, is just the coup de grace of it. I'm aware that there are modders trying to do genuine fix of it on Moddb, you can check that out if you really want to.
Without any hype directing them, their opinions are pure and genuine. HL2 always sucked ass
Zoomer here, honestly I enjoyed it. I would've preferred if you got to play as a nude man, and got to chase other nude men around, but I get the vibe they were going for
Worst thing about the game is the gunplay and weapon sounds, just feels antiquated. Also the lack of gibs is heresy. Other than that great game.
It's bad sequel
