? it's a gaming mode vs desktop mode conflict issue
a normal linux desktop wouldn't have the problem of trying to boot up steam BEFORE the OS

      >blame linux
You are tech illiterate. This is not a Linux issue, it wouldn't force updates on you by itself (unlike Windows).

It's a SteamOS issue, which is an Arch fork developed by Valve. They're at fault here, they can't make a proper Linux distro.

Back when I used Linux, you could use Ctrl+Alt+F1 to switch to a terminal, no matter what desktop environment you were using. I'm not 100% sure on the key combination, but it was definitely something +F1.

He's not lying. The Steam Deck starts in Game mode, everything's locked down until you get to the main menu past the boot screen, and you can't access the Terminal from there, even with a keyboard attached. And no, you can't get into Desktop mode from there either, you need to be able to navigate to the menu option past the boot screen to do this. I got this bug 4 months back and had to wipe the whole goddamned thing, really thought they would have fixed it by now.
You can however fix this, but you need to buy a ethernet adapter and plug the Steam Deck directly into your broadband adapter for it to work.

It's because Valve wants to do a verification check on start up, and when it can't connect to Valve's servers it gets stuck in a re connection loop, Valve did add the option to start the Steam Deck in offline mode, but you need to toggle the setting in the system menu before you turn the Deck off with no wi-fi. Lost my Red Dead save because of it, and completely lost my motivation to restart it.

that wasn't working, and I figured out it's related to my wireguard VPN which ran out recently and it keeps trying to auto connect to even though I specifically set it to not fricking do that because I don't need a VPN 24/7 and I'm waiting to renew my account for it
you just have to fricking wait forever until it stops trying to pointlessly connect and then you can use the fricking buttons on the device to actually go into desktop mode and turn the fricking internet on, and also just delete the VPN connection entirely since it ignored me toggling the setting to not fricking auto connect

    >second hand price is $250, may as well get a new one

Cool. I'm so mad about this bros.

Wait, it just activates after a few minutes? This sounds like a software issue

correct. ive reflashed os, reinstalled, etc. 100 times. no dice.

Buy deck. Swap boards. Return deck.

decent idea, but ALLEGEDLY, the new boards shipped and the first model boards are diff

Does it still happen if you install Windows on the device (Or boot in to Windows-To-Go from a thumb drive)
The only thing I can think of beyond software would be whatever IC that is the encoder for the joystick having shit the bed

although this is a design flaw, you shouldn't misuse words like a moron. it's not "bricked," you can boot it to the bios and recover from there

I booted into safe mode and it just gives me the single drive partition, and booting into that just goes back into the boot loop
nobody in this thread actually owns a fricking steam deck, you are all worthless morons

I turn wi-fi off on the deck because there was an issue with the audio constantly cutting out that was apparently related to having wifi on while you're docked
and also because I don't want the wifi on if I'm playing a game that needs wired Internet like fighting games

frick me for using the fricking functionality of the Device and being raped for it

Preach, the more people that know about these bugs, the sooner Valve gets off their ass and fixes it, unfortunately The Decks biggest group of fans with any sway towards Valve are in a giant (lets post my 1000th picture of me sitting in insert setting here) echo chamber with mods that don't even enforce their own rules.

According to OP it isn't even a hard loop, it just times out and goes back to the deck UI

it's two separate issues, one is not having wifi enabled and turning the device off without enabling offline mode, the other is having a VPN config that tries to auto connect even after setting it to not do that and the VPN subscription expired

the first one can be solved by plugging the device into Ethernet somehow, the other one you can't do anything but just wait until it arbitrarily decides to let you actually use the buttons on the device

The second one lets you get back into the quick menu after 30 min, but the first one idk but I let my deck sit for hours and it never got out of the loop, maybe Valves fix was putting a timer for how long it should try connecting, but goddamn 30 min is alot, bring that thing dowe to 5 min max.

I'm gonna be real with all of you: It's your fault for buying it.
    You're a gadget-addicted bugman.
    You don't this thing.
It has no practical use over an actual handheld or a real PC, or even a reasonably powered laptop.
As a hybrid PC-Handheld it embodies the worst of both worlds and none of the positives.
You bought it because wanted the latest shiny gadget no matter how useless it is.
I do not feel sorry for you, and I don't think you should have a right to refund either.

Mine boots just fine without internet, hell I keep mine offline unless I want to install a game. Either you bought a unit with a defect and can easily solve it with an RMA to Valve or your boot partition is corrupted in which case that's an easily solved issue with hundreds of websites detailing the steps necessary to fix it.
