Why would you ever play a Pokemon game not on an emulator? I have physical copies of everything Gen 1 - 5 and I still emulate. Speeding the game up is, unsurprisingly, a huge time save, and being able to play randomizers or with specific mods makes the experience better.
Even better is that nu-gen games aren't worth buying because of how shit they all are. That way I can mock nu-gen gays with accuracy without having to fund Game Freak's frankly criminal levels of incompetence.

Gengar is pretty fast and can frick you up with Hypnosis and Shadow Ball. Not sure why the fandom only memes Whitney when Morty is worse.
Just use a normal type mon bro, that's why you have Girafarig in the routes nearby, so it's immune to Shadow Ball and can frick Gastly, Haunter and Gengar with Confusion or whatever.

Turn battle animations off and go and grind off of a bunch of Stantlers, Miltanks and Raticates. Also in HG/SS Croconaw will learn Crunch before long so it should give you a bit of leverage over Morty.
The level curve is not as bad as some people make it out to be except for fighting Red at the end of the game.
