Oblivion, Skyrim, ESO and Michael Kirkbride himself have each ruined the lore in their own ways. It ain't easy being a TES loregay. The question is do you outright dismiss everything post-Morrowind as non-canon, or do you dumpster dive into the later stuff, hoping to salvage a tiny, additional morsel of something good.

        Anonymous

The easier route is to treat Morrowind as semi canon. Treat the Cyrods description of Cyrodil as deliberate misinformation. The Imperials had a low opinion of the backwards Dunmer and probably didn't want them to move there.

Yeah if you ignore the dozen or so reasons why that cope makes no sense

Old games are less relevant. Easier to dismiss them than the newer games. Do you think anybody will rage if they straight up ignore Arena? Nobody alive has played Arena so nobody cares about it.
The most painless option is to discount earlier games as having a less clear understanding.

Arena, Daggerfall, Battlespire, Redguard, Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim, their expansions, and the dev's unofficial writings are all canon.

It's especially ironic because in reality Bethesda has actively been making the Redguards more arabic and less black for the past 14 years, they were mostly just black 17th century pirates whose buildings had middle-eastern domes in Morrowind and Oblivion, you didn't have turban-wearing Redguards named Samir Al-Satakalawahi until Skyrim and ESO, and they seem to want to stick to that portrayal judging by the recent Fallout Shelter spin-off

          >redguards are just Black folk doing arabian nights
          >that's their entire schtick
No it isn't, lorelet. That has only been their shtick in Skyrim. Redguards were intended as an African Black power fantasy and their culture was a mix of a bunch of real-world influences including West African, Caribbean, Anglo and Japanese cultures.
In fact the only single aspect of Arab-inspired Redguard culture prior to Skyrim was their architecture and nothing else.

It would unironically be a good thing if Bethesda dials back that hokey Aladdin shit and goes back to the less sanitized, Afro-centric cultural hodgepodge version of Redguards, but alas it seems like it's all turbans and flying carpets from here on out.

Yeah. that's fair, that is what I meant, but I clearly phrased it poorly.
TES didn't exactly start off as a particularly rich or interesting setting, and it's been regressing towards highly-conspicuous stereotypes since skyrim and now with all the mobilehomosexualry and the dogshit mmo. And arabian nights fits that highly-conspicuous mold to a T.

When people talked about tes lore, they talked about morrowind most of the time. Nobody gives a single shit about oblivion or skyrim lore (except that one moron who keeps making thalmor vs empire vs stormcloak thread).
Tes lore stopped being interesting once emil set his foot on bethesda and becomes a writer there. Fallout was pretty much dead on arrival in terms of lore and story because of this, and when NV was released, I remember people are comparing NV writing and lore to FO3 writing quality, leading to the conclusion that emil is a shit writer. Then skyrim got released, and people hates skyrim main story, with that dragonborn and such.
Unironically, kirkbride is the reason whypeople are not fully hating on skyrim lore yet because that guy apparently still wrote the lore and additional text for skyrim, sometimes they used it as a cope to hide their dissatisfation of emil writing quality in skyrim.
Then eso happened, bunch of teens who are never read a fantasy books except the one that are written by grrm and some women fantasy author worked on eso. Every lore was then neutered, every single thing in the lore was getting dissected and explained in the game, they almost did this shit with dwemer but todd stopped them btw. They're not as bad as emil in terms of writing, but their writing arent as good as the old TES either. There you have it, downfall of vidya fantasy writing started from TES

TES lore isn't really incoherent. Or at least the metaphysics aren't, anyway. It's a bunch of existing esoteric belief systems retrofitted into a video game universe in order to do a cheap "oh my frikking god we all live in a simulation :O" bit.

        That's just one interpretation

elder scrolls lore is neither of those things, the fantasy physics are pretty straightforward and the lore contradictions come from intentional in-universe reasons, such as people lying or unintentionally exaggerating the truth
the only thing you need to do is navigate those conflicts and come up with a reasonable explanation for certain things

souls lore is just a bunch of vague inexplicable bullshit hinting at a depth that doesn't exist, there's genuinely so little going on and so little of it ties together in any way that you literally need to hallucinate and come up with the entire story on your own

Lol, tell me what happened at red mountain homosexual.

its pretty funny how you can spin anything of quality into something "bad" by simply being as obnoxious as possible. its basically every other post on this site that follows this same exact formula.
        >umm ACKshually taking inspiration from genuine spiritual and metaphysical ideas that living breathing people have believed for centuries... is le bad!

I noticed you can do a lot of things. Especially heinous is when people call anything fermented "rotten."

          >beer is gross don't you know that its a tea made from boiled mashed up barley fetuses and hob genitals that they let sit out and rot for a few days?

I vastly prefer Souls' inference of lore rather than talking to someone about a teapot and them dumping literal paragraphs on you.

Everything Vivec says is a divine shitpost. His entire thing is using lies to tell the truth.
