boat combat is always sleep inducing.
Boat combat is incredibly tense. Your controlling a giant behemoth with a wooden wheel, trying to predict the way the wind will blow and you have to do parabolic equations to hit your enemy and you're just one broadside away from either a slow descent into Davey Jone's locker or just exploding. If you don't get boarded of course.
I'm suddenly reminded of why I hate pvp in sea of thieves, because boat combat always devolves into boarding and I find the hand to hand combat fricking sleep inducing in that game.
Most of the time you'll just blast the players if you're aimings not terrible, the real fun is when the Kraken or a Megladon attacks mid-fight and it becomes a clusterfrick.

If only Ubisoft encouraged modding for their games. Black flag would definitely have received overhaul mods that would have let you done more pirate stuff.

starsector is pretty good when it comes to smuggling and fencing ill gotten goods, as well as hiding your ship away from authorities.

Space Rangers HD is very much like Sid Meier's Pirates! as well as the OP, except in space. You go around space doing various missions and interacting with other ships. You start out as part of the Space Rangers, but there is also a pirate faction with their own space stations set up throughout the galaxy that you can eventually work your rank up through, earning money for new ships/parts/weapons, doing things like piracy and smuggling. There's also a sort of choose your own adventure mixed into some of the missions with very good writing. It's honestly one of the most soulful games I've ever played.
Sounds worth a pirate as well. I've been itching for a new type of setting to dick around in, and it seems like I've landed on space.
Another space pirate sim that I've had my eye on for a few years is Star Traders: Frontiers, you might also want to check that out. It's seen a metric ton of updates since its inception, so it's probably very deep by now since I last played it when it came out.

I don't think I've ever played a game with such a contrast between the good and bad elements. The sailing is best in class but any time you control your character on foot it's bizarrely terrible.

Black Flag, everyone hates that its one of the best pirate games ever because its Asscreed (it isn't really Asscreed).
I hate that I have to frick around with its moronic story. I'd rather it just be a fun sandbox.
