Look social interaction is a trial and error bullshit. But it's mostly how you look, so shave that neckbeard and shower before going to these social gatherings. Also if you're a nervous wreck, just drink some courage liquid not too much though.
An easy thing to do is talk to people who are in line with you for something you're interested in. You can also try wearing or carrying something that's a conversation starter if you're not going to cosplay. I wore this popcorn bucket around my neck at the last con I went to and it started a lot of conversations.
I've just been to E3 many times. I miss it, even the 2 hour lines to play Evil Within or Mario Odyssey. It was a good excuse to take the day off work and drink.
