>Miyamoto has occasionally been critical of the role-playing game (RPG) genre. In a 1992 interview, when asked whether Zelda is an RPG series, he declined but classified it as "a real-time adventure"; he said he was "not interested in [games] decided by stats and numbers [but in preserving] as much of that 'live' feeling as possible", which he said "action games are better suited in conveying".
>In 2003, he described his "fundamental dislike" of the RPG genre: "I think that with an RPG you are completely bound hand and foot, and can't move. But gradually you become able to move your hands and legs... you become slightly untied. And in the end, you feel powerful. So what you get out of an RPG is a feeling of happiness. But I don't think they're something that's fundamentally fun to play. With a game like that, anyone can become really good at it. With Mario though, if you're not good at it, you may never get good."
>Good at bing bing shit
>Includes RPG elements in his favorite Zelda
What did Mario mandate troons mean by this?
rpgs are dogshit and the most overrated genre by far. they feel so pointless to play.
they're fundamentally adventure games so it's fine
what does zelda have in common with ADVENT.EXE
>turn based is less immediately satisfying than action
mind blowing revelation. how did he figure it out? next is he going to tell us buttons control the character onscreen?
No. He said they're not "fundamentally fun to play."
>open world zelda add a bunch of rpg and jrpg elements
>hates JRPG
Miyamoto is a washed-up hasbeen who's just following modern trends now. Thank god he no longer works on games and is just tard-wrangled for theme park and movie bullshit.
RPG is a moronic descriptor, most games are RPGs. If Zelda is a roleplaying game because you're playing the role of Link as he saves Hyrule, Mario and Sonic are RPGs because you're playing the role of two heroes as they save their respected land.
He's right, RPGs simulate artifical skill, thats literally the entire point. Its not you getting better at the game, its "your character". It detached and not as personal.
>nooooo RPGs suck you get more powerful and it makes it easier to win
>anyway make sure you ger the heart containers, Biggoron's Sword, blue armor, upgrade your bomb bag and get the light arrows before you take on this boss
So you’ve never played OoT
>if you're not good at it, you may never get good
Does Miyamoto understand the concept of practice & repetition.
>action games are a morons idea of fun
We know already
We know that you were a social reject as a child and are permanently butthurt about it
Yeah thats why hes a moron and hires people like Aonuma to ruin his legacy
>30 years later
>still crying about people not liking Zelda 2
>I think that with an RPG you are completely bound hand and foot, and can't move. But gradually you become able to move your hands and legs... you become slightly untied. And in the end, you feel powerful
Doesn't this also describe Metroid? Hell, Zelda is the same. You're locked out of sections of the overworld, requiring things like strength upgrades and the hammer in LttP and Bombs for Zora's River in OoT. You end up with a full set up heart containers and a bunch of useful items and feel powerful
no you see in an RPG you get gold from chests and enemies you kill and then use it in a shop to buy better equipment
whereas in zelda you get rupees from chests and enemies and then use them in a shop to buy a better sword that doesnt show numerical values even though in the code you're going from a 2 damage sword to a 4 damage sword, the fact they dont show you the number means you actually just GOT MORE SKILLFUL
He's right, stats and shit are moronic in games that aren't turn based. Devs seriously need to find other ways to upgrade your character besides just stat bonuses that feel like nothing besides bringing you up to speed with the newly scaled up enemies you will encounter.
>With a game like that, anyone can become really good at it. With Mario though, if you're not good at it, you may never get good.
Immensely based
Did he say the same thing about Dragon Quest or was this sentiment reserved exclusively for their friends over at Square at the time?
Threads like this are one of the reasons why I'm boycotting the TTYD remake.
He's right
so..he doesn't like it when the player doesn't want to be subjected to seeing childish visuals when trying to play his game? makes sense he replaced Koizumi with Aonuma and hates Sakurai. we can't have the audience developing their mental faculties.
>first quote
Almost a fair point, but implying it's objectively bad to connect to a more abstracted world, story, or gameplay style is wrong- it's just a bit harder to do instantly.
>second quote
What- what the frick? He's just describing the unlocking of abilities as a game progresses. He's trying to do it in an unflattering way, but he's just describing progression. What in the world was he thinking separated Zelda from this? The core appeal of the series is exploring more of the world by unlocking more abilities.
And for that matter, this was 2003? Wind Waker was out by then. Why in the frick is he pretending difficulty is a concern?
I don't know tbh. Strategizing, managing inventories, and adapting to all sorts of encounters can be just as fun as refining mechanical skill.
I think the people who hate turn-based stuff on principle should play some of the best games with the system like Etrian Odyssey games, Labyrinth of Touhou 1+2, Jagged Alliance 2, and the og XCOM.
Can't speak much about ARPGs tho. Elden Ring and Nioh 2 are my entire experience with the subgenre and they were great.
Miyamoto is an autist who hates random shit while acting like only what he likes is good. The dude has zero objectivity and that became painfully apparent over time.
Why would I listen to a failed manga artist who literally stole Donkey Kong from the company who actually made it?
Action RPGs exist. Game developer doesn't play games and these opinions were over 30 years ago when ARPGs weren't really a thing.
OP is as moronic as a journalist.
>over 30 years ago when ARPGs weren't really a thing.
They've been around since the very early 80s.
They were, Ys was better then and it's better now
I like JRPG's but he's right, and people should be more critical of them.
The genre does a lot of really stupid shit that is easily fixable, but they don't because "tradition".
