David and Goliath misses a bit of its magic when you properly look at slings and realize that they were really fricked up as a weapon.

Yeah if you're highly experienced and IF you hit your mark in time, generally if I was betting on match between a shepard boy armed with a sling and a towering armored experienced soldier, I'd bet on the obvious choice. Which makes the story significant, because even though his chances were low he kept true and won.

I warmly welcome you to try using one yourself, the power of a small rock being propelled by rope and leather is absolutely staggering in the hands of anyone. The only problem you will quickly find is the accuracy, the rock will go literally every other way than the point you want and it takes a long time to get good at it hitting the vicinity of your target.

For context sheperds didn't use their slings to hit things, they just threw their stones a long ways off to scare off any predatory animals and scare sheep back to the herd. So the idea of a boy hitting an armored giant in one shot is impressive no matter what. Sorry for the long post, I'm serious about making your own sling though, they're easy to make and hellafun, just be careful with them.

It's impressive because you can't be that accurate with a sling
It's a massed weapon for light skirmishers to throw a hail of stones toward an armoured enemy force and run away
One guy getting one shot and managing to strike goliath in the head was the point, against all odds, because god guided his stone or whatever

thinking about it makes me realize how israeli the bible as a whole is
the story was told by making up a giant unbeatable enemy and a small underdog with """faith""" while in reality (if it ever happened of course) it was probably a pretty even match, even favoring david I would say
imagine a medieval story about a crossbowman fighting a knight and oneshotting him
not so impressive right? but its the exact same story
slings are very dangerouse and easy as frick to use, a shepheard using one daily or regularly could easily "snipe" with one

So how many armies have been devestated by mass shepard slingers? They're effectively guns right?

          you disingenuous moron
EVERY army in any nation had thousands slingers for 100s of years
why would anyone bother with them if they are useless?

            Anonymous

Yeah they did and 99% of them couldn't "snipe" a headshot, they were cheap and mass moved into place to harras the enemy.
Going against an organized armed force however, their usefulness becomes null.

Sorry I'm peeved that the strength of the sling has been so overstated that people forgot about all their downsides, namely accuracy and speed. Anyone who has regularly used both a sling and a bow will innately know which is superior, the former simply being more affordable in mass numbers. I love slings but thats mostly because I can carry one around on my belt and use it whenever I want, can't do that with a bow and arrow.

Tons. Most armies levied civilians back in the day, and had ranks of slingers.

Most people can't hit a target at 15 feet with a gun on their first week. All ranged weapons are "le inaccurate" without drillings.

when i was a kid they always depicted david's sling as a cartoony slingshot in bible cartoons, it was odd. I didn't know what it was actually supposed to be until I was a teenager, and I didn't know how fricking brutal that weapon could be until I got into reading about ancient world history.

        Anonymous

That's because most artists never heard of ancient military slings, anachronistically drawing slingSHOTS.

          Anonymous

Oh is it to maybe disuade kids from making their own slings and instead make them use those weak kid versions? I know there are serious slingshots but I a kid could just tie some string and cloth and start causing some serious havoc.

            Anonymous

Could be. A bullet to the head from a sling could one shot anyone who's not wearing a helmet. Those primitive weapons were no joke... Yet Cain killed Abel with a fricking rock and that was never censored. You never hear about kids murdering each other with rocks.

It's interesting how the sling fell out of the common consciousness for so long. It's basically the first human ranged weapon. And it lasted straight up through the middle ages.
Even with a famous bible story to carry it, people forgot what slings were.
The internet seems to have brought this knowledge back. As well as lots of other little things. Like remember when nobody knew what Trebuchets were unless they played Age of Empires? They had to use the generic term "catapult" in movies so as not to confuse people.

Yeah, I played RTS games as a kid and was surprised people didn't know about Roman onagers and scorpios. I had no idea trebuchets only became part of normie vocabulary thanks to memes.

I was toying with the idea of having an educational presentation for kids on how powerful the sling can be and how ti make one.
And then I figured it was an incredibly bad idea and maybe kids shouldn't flick rocks at murder speeds because it's fun how fast they go and how they can make things explode if they hit them.

Ah, just do it. Nothing bad can happen. Kids aren't what they used to be. This reminds me of the time I was tutoring a kid who was having trouble with History. I taught him how the legionnaires fought in formations, using gladii. I pretended his parents' kitchen knife was a gladius and taught him how to stab people properly. It was all in the heat of the moment. I'm sure he'll never stab anyone.

              cont.
I just remembered how I learned about slings. I first saw them in Baldur's Gate 1. They were weak-ass ranged weapons maigc users could use. D&D was probably the catalyst for reminding people of slings' existence. Too bad they're represented as really weak, while in reality they were really deadly against unarmored opponents. I can see how mogged they get by bows since they're easier to aim with, but it takes much more skill to make a good bow and fletch the arrows compared to crafting slings with sone animal skin and launching some lead. good luck hitting the target with that.

Also shows how difficult it is to hit a small target like someone's head. Takes him like 20 attempts for each hit. Although this is an untrained man with a garbage sling.
David landing a headshot against Goliath would be either prodigious luck (attributed to god of course) or impressive skill. Or more likely both.

Ranged weapons of this era were not suited for dueling. They were intended to be used en mass against groups. You don't need to hit a single person. You just have to hit the enemy army.

On the topic of video games, would be cool if there was a slow to windup and difficult to aim sling weapon in ER type game but it does increased damage or gives a guaranteed stun if you hit a headshot
