>Shivers is literally the city speaking to you
no its not really, that would imply a certain supernatural element. it really is just a form of intuition or instinct in the form of refracted memories
The most disappointing part of the game is that none of the too high/too low caveats on stats actually happens. You get more or less dialogue bubbles, and that's about it. Sure, it mights influences a first play through, but it doesn't actually affect the story or events in a meaningful way.
Shivers has a male voice, the intuition, and a female voice, the literal embodiment of the city. This is most obvious when it hints to you about the Anorak, tells you where the killer is, and warns you about nuclear holocaust.
It's explained in game, it's intuition, or the feeling you get on the hairs on the back of your neck, knowing things you are not supposed to. It also tells you how you are going to die, 22 years later.
That's every non-Shivers skill my man. The obvious one is Encyclopedia but nearly every skill gets a word in at some stage that reflect Harry's past knowledge. Even Reaction Speed gets in on it, and MOT has no personality.
>Inland Empire is past (You), each time you pass the check you're just remembering more of what you used to know before the blackout
No. It's explicitly not. Inland Empire is your Magpie skill. It's your ability to tap into the power Innocences possess and interpret memories and data that have yet to happen. And create Pale in the process.
Inland Empire is the representation of your ability to perceive and interpret the constant stream of information from future to past present in the game's world. Not unlike an Innocence, you pluck random bits of information from the future out of the air and interpret them into something useful.
Shivers is the city itself speaking to you. It'syour ability to feel the hum of life all around you, and know things nearby you have no business knowing.
Enough of this non-canon horseshit. Tertiary materials made by an artist that never got used are meaningless.
The thing about innocences and what they can do is explicitly told to you in the game. Also the entire DE setting is one big wannabe tabletop but the guy is too pussy to put out an actual system so it's all canon.
It's explicitly implied that Innocences steal from the future when they catapult humanity forward, and that the expansion of the Pale is linked with human thought. The book all but confirms it.
Frick you its a cool idea. The nice thing about Disco Elysium is it lets you ride the line between rambling schizo hobo and actual psychic genius, without really knowing if you're truly either or.
You can play the game as a professional that gets his shit together fairly well. But it gets really boring fast and you don't experience even half of what the game has to offer.
>Inland Empire
Schizoid type thinking, making elaborate connections that aren't necessarily there. >Shivers
Instinct and intuition, a detective's hunch.
My interpretation >Inland Empire - Anti-parsimony. The first theory is always the best just because. >Shivers - Like the geographical pivot of history but given spiritual/existential dimension.
>Inland Empire
Lynch's best film. >Shivers
Cronenberg's best film.
I have no fricking clue what you are actually talking about and just thought OP's image was cool looking but I thought this was interesting to mention.
I tried Disco Elysium out yesterday, and ended up finishing the first day in a single sitting. It's hard to drop it since there is always something else to do, someone to question. And I happen to have some questions for anons ITT:
1) How long is this game?
2) I picked the Thinker archetype for my playthrough, and aspects of Intellect pop up a lot, which makes sense. If I invested more in other skills, would they pop up as often?
3) Why is the word "homosexual" censored? I feel like I get why, but when I try to conjure a proper explanation, I end up empty handed.
1) Several days. You usually end the game on day 7 and the time limit is two weeks IIRC.
2) Yes, but creating your own character and just popping things as you want is better.
3) No one wants to be the guy who publicly said "homosexual" on a mic as a voice actor, the guy who wrote it or the guy who has to read it out loud.
everything [...] said is basically true. for reference i have finished the game once and if you factor in a bit of idle time on my part i spent 52 hours to finish it. i autistically combed through the whole game though trying to find shit (no save scum though, mind you)
I have another question: why do names of places sound French and every other character have a French accent?
The world of Elysium has been in the works for around 15 years with multiple people assisting in fleshing out the world. It's more of a distorted reflection of our world than a divergence of it.

The map is a fun fan thing but you have to remember that the Pale is not just white space where a sea would be. There is land that is being eaten as the game is going on (Ubi Sunt? and one of the semenine islands are referred as such in game) and moving between isolas is practically moving to another planet or plane of existance, the distance is that much greater and incomprehensible to us.
Mundi is called like that because to the Mundi people that was the entire world.

>the distance is that much greater
It's not distance, it's the presumed impossibility of passing through Pale or the assumption that there was no "other side"
>No one wants to be the guy who publicly said "homosexual" on a mic as a voice actor
actors play undesirables all the time who say naughty words, why is voice acting any different?
1) Several days. You usually end the game on day 7 and the time limit is two weeks IIRC.
2) Yes, but creating your own character and just popping things as you want is better.
3) No one wants to be the guy who publicly said "homosexual" on a mic as a voice actor, the guy who wrote it or the guy who has to read it out loud.

1. About 30-35 hours give or take, it takes roughly 5 to 6 days
2. The more you level a skill, the more thoughts pop up regarding that skill. You can level whatever and also get better dice rolls on that skill check, that's how the skill specialisation element works in this game. For a first playthrough int is a good choice because of encyclopedia, you can learn a lot of background info about the world. I suggest also leveling Inland Empire and Shivers a bit because you will understand why soon, Half Life also pretty much solves the whole fricking game at one point out of nowhere. It's not paramount but it helps figure things out sooner.
3. Imagine the backlash in the current year. They almost canceled pewdiepie because he made fun of a girl's nails, comparetively saying homosexual is a death sentence.
1) Depends on if you want to do more playthroughs. It'd be hard to spend more than 100 hours on it.
2) Yes. Put points into the personas that give you dialog you enjoy. You can reach a maximum, but I don't know what it is. I think after 9 you can see every dialog and pass every check.
3) They invented new slurs for the different races (kipt), so it wouldn't make sense to use asiatic and then censor it. The only options were to invent a new slur for gay people at the risk of confusing people, or censoring it and looking like PC police to anonymous imageboard users.
I missed the bit at the end with the ex-wife even after doing the prerequisites because I was actually really pumped to see who the killer was and when Kim offered to let me take a nap, I refused so I could push ahead to the ending.
Even though I was more than satisfied because of the bug showing up, I'm sad that I missed another part that's apparently great.
Yeah that pissed me off as well, I played the original back when it came out, then I replayed the final cut recently with all voice overs. I remember that part very well from the first playthrough, but on my second I couldn't remember where I got it. I almost skipped it the second time. It's so pivotal to the game it makes no sense to make it that easily missable. Same with the prank call, wasn't that a skill check to dial the correct number by memory?
Another tip is speaking to Lena, then Joyce about reality to learn about the Jamais Vu thought. It's the best thought to internalise in the game bar none, every bubble you click earns you xp.
Half-Light is in the same category as Visual Calculus. They don't speak up all that often, but when they do you should probably listen. And they don't have too many skill checks associated with them, but those few checks tend to be pretty important.
Listening doesn't mean automatically doing what it says, you can glean plenty of useful information from it and Cuno at least deserves a punch in the face. If you want a real example of Half-Light going way too far it's when it wants you to taste human beef boot stew.
I seem to recall that the devs made Disco Elysium that's based on their own tabletop setting or something. If I'm correct, think it's something that they'll ever put out on the market?
Well in the original interview where he says he wants to do it he also says it will be the last thing he does with the Elysium setting after decades of working on it, something along the lines of "when I'm 60"

Why does it want to taste corpse-soap-soup?
So, what's actually the difference between Inland Empire and Shivers?
Inland Empire is your inner schizo voice. Shivers is literally the city speaking to you.
I dunno it sounds like the same thing if you ask me but okay
Inland Empire comes internally, while Shivers comes externally.
>Shivers is literally the city speaking to you
no its not really, that would imply a certain supernatural element. it really is just a form of intuition or instinct in the form of refracted memories

THE GENUINELY SUPRA-NATURAL
The most disappointing part of the game is that none of the too high/too low caveats on stats actually happens. You get more or less dialogue bubbles, and that's about it. Sure, it mights influences a first play through, but it doesn't actually affect the story or events in a meaningful way.
Lots of things they planned didn't happen
Wow. Where did you get that?
It's from an early trailer
I once got perception down to 0 and it wouldn't let me interact with the environment anymore
I'm still mad at this, I thought my save bugged when this happened. It's obvious in retrospect but NOWHERE does it mention that it will do this.
Shivers has a male voice, the intuition, and a female voice, the literal embodiment of the city. This is most obvious when it hints to you about the Anorak, tells you where the killer is, and warns you about nuclear holocaust.
Don't forget when she reveals Martinaise is canonically a DMX fan.
>no its not really
t. Never heard Shivers' true voice.
It's explained in game, it's intuition, or the feeling you get on the hairs on the back of your neck, knowing things you are not supposed to. It also tells you how you are going to die, 22 years later.
I'm sorry but the debate ended here
The devs literally described it as supernatural. That's it. It's the city talking to you.
>that would imply a certain supernatural element
Anon...
Inland Empire is a larping moron, Shivers is legit and might actually be caused by Pale frickery.
Inland Empire is past (You), each time you pass the check you're just remembering more of what you used to know before the blackout

you could try becoming a magnesium based lifeform irl

i just started my first playthrough since release day. going all in on phys and motor.

I have another question: why do names of places sound French and every other character have a French accent?
Because Paris Commune was major inspiration
Because Revachol is basically New York except if it was also in Algeria or Haiti.
Does this game's world have the same geography as Earth? If yes, when did historical divergence from our world start?
No
Around the time the world started being erased from existence by the Pale
>Around the time the world started being erased from existence by the Pale
Sounds like spoilers. I better leave the thread.
The world of Elysium has been in the works for around 15 years with multiple people assisting in fleshing out the world. It's more of a distorted reflection of our world than a divergence of it.
That's a lot of water.

Wasn't there that one time Kim said homosexual but it was accidently uncensored and you could hear the VA just say homosexual?
Yep, when you get him to wear the pisshomosexual jacket iirc.
Also, a reminder that only the most moronic homosexuals reply to obvious bait
everything

In game days*
>Half Life
What is that skill supposed to represent? As far as I can tell, it's blind rage or something.
It's your fight or flight instinct
>They almost canceled pewdiepie because he made fun of a girl's nails
Huh? When did this happen?
Also when I say that half life solves the game, you won't immediately realise it when you first see it, it's hidden under a Greek philosopher's quote.
1) Depends on if you want to do more playthroughs. It'd be hard to spend more than 100 hours on it.
2) Yes. Put points into the personas that give you dialog you enjoy. You can reach a maximum, but I don't know what it is. I think after 9 you can see every dialog and pass every check.

homosexual is censored because many of the voice actors probably didn't want to say it.
The person who plays Kim, however, is fine with it, and he says it at least twice.
COMMUNISM
I missed the bit at the end with the ex-wife even after doing the prerequisites because I was actually really pumped to see who the killer was and when Kim offered to let me take a nap, I refused so I could push ahead to the ending.

The cuirass can tank the first shot if you flunk the dodge, right?
Nope. The shot always lands in the same place. That's why the leggings are missing.
Yes it can, but you will always get shot in the leg like the other anon said by the end of the fight.
Why is Half-Light so underutilised?
It remains my favourite portrait and skill but it only comes up a handful of times.
Half-Light is in the same category as Visual Calculus. They don't speak up all that often, but when they do you should probably listen. And they don't have too many skill checks associated with them, but those few checks tend to be pretty important.

Punching Cuno in the face is the best choice you could take. Maybe it's a bit exagerated but half-light is right
Yes. When all the other schizo voices fail you, Half Light will still be there to keep you safe

I seem to recall that the devs made Disco Elysium that's based on their own tabletop setting or something. If I'm correct, think it's something that they'll ever put out on the market?

That's great to hear. I hope it's something that doesn't take too long to properly realize.
Well in the original interview where he says he wants to do it he also says it will be the last thing he does with the Elysium setting after decades of working on it, something along the lines of "when I'm 60"
Aw damn, that's a shame.
But oh well, so long as we get to see more of the world, I'm happy.
How to edit skill points to the max? I already have two playthroughs under my belt and I want to go full schizo cop.
