Having Res 4 there is a dumb frick move. I'm not a big fan of Baldur's gate but I saw how much people loved it. It definitely deserves it over Alan Wake 2, which I'm guessing only wins because it has a black female protagonist.
Hogwarts Legacy sold well because it's a popular IP, not because it's a good game. It's just a generic Assassin's Creed style overworld with mid combat, a mid story and solely carried by the Harry Potter IP and the Castle being finally explorable after 20 years.
Tears of the Kingdom taken by itself has good gameplay, same for Spiderman 2, but I agree that these games are also carried by IP, they just stand better by themselves than Hogwart's Legacy and it's shallow combat.
Tbh I'd like if they started to remove formulaic game franchises from the list. Mario has been the same game for two decades and Zelda has gotten so stale they're just making big DLCs. Alan Wake 2 is the only game on this list that actually uses videogames as a medium to an substantial or meaningful degree. When Silent Hill 2 proved that videogames itself, as a medium are special not simply for its gameplay, but the almost tangible experience it could instill, an experience that simply wouldnt be the same as a movie, where you were navigating and trying to understand a strange world and strange circumstances. When games like Prince of Persia Sands of Time thought it would be cool to make the character and story feel more personal and lively by having the Prince narrate the story himself and insist that "No No No, that's not how it happened" whenever he died. When Dark Souls 1 decided to try and make a robust, and cohesive hostile enviroment, where every push to the next bonfire managing your estus and navigating dark complex areas, felt like fighting for your life to progress. To find something new, to satiate that curiosity and sense of discovery and continue to press on through harsh conditions, and varied structures filled with a number of unique traps and enemies always ready to greet you.
Today. TR would be called clunky, slow, boring. SH2 a moviegame. SoT is marvel/disneyesque and DS1 simple and tedious.

I think its pretty much a win for Nintendo, I'd be fine with Wonder or TotK winning, though Baldur's Gate did have pretty good sex scenes and Raphael's Final Act song is damn good. Hi-Fi Rush, Resident Evil 4 Remake, and Zelda were all fun games I've played this year. I haven't played any of the others, but I don't see Alan Wake 2, Super Mario Wonder, or Spider-Man 2 taking it unless someone was giving Geoff a blowjob deal backstage. I also enjoyed Dead Space Remake, Trepang2 and Trails into Reverie.
Realistically, it's going to be Zelda. Definitely possible for it to be BG3 which wouldn't be that surprising either, it's popular and people like it. RE4 Remake is great, but no way in hell it gets game of the year when journalists are the ones who are voting on this. If it wins, in any universe, it would be way out of left field.

2023 had a lot of solid games but not great games. There's a large number of 7.5/10 - 8.5/10 games that have come out but none of them really go above that (except for maybe BG3). So the GOTY conversation feels a bit awkward because every game has some kind of asterisk to it. If you put Spiderman 2 or Alan Wake against games like Elden Ring or RDR2 or Doom, the former games would seem very forgettable.

When Silent Hill 2 proved that videogames itself, as a medium are special not simply for its gameplay, but the almost tangible experience it could instill, an experience that simply wouldnt be the same as a movie, where you were navigating and trying to understand a strange world and strange circumstances. When games like Prince of Persia Sands of Time thought it would be cool to make the character and story feel more personal and lively by having the Prince narrate the story himself and insist that "No No No, that's not how it happened" whenever he died. When Dark Souls 1 decided to try and make a robust, and cohesive hostile enviroment, where every push to the next bonfire managing your estus and navigating dark complex areas, felt like fighting for your life to progress. To find something new, to satiate that curiosity and sense of discovery and continue to press on through harsh conditions, and varied structures filled with a number of unique traps and enemies always ready to greet you.

Hi-Fi Rush, Resident Evil 4 Remake, and Zelda were all fun games I've played this year. I haven't played any of the others, but I don't see Alan Wake 2, Super Mario Wonder, or Spider-Man 2 taking it unless someone was giving Geoff a blowjob deal backstage. I also enjoyed Dead Space Remake, Trepang2 and Trails into Reverie.
Realistically, it's going to be Zelda. Definitely possible for it to be BG3 which wouldn't be that surprising either, it's popular and people like it. RE4 Remake is great, but no way in hell it gets game of the year when journalists are the ones who are voting on this. If it wins, in any universe, it would be way out of left field.

2023 had a lot of solid games but not great games. There's a large number of 7.5/10 - 8.5/10 games that have come out but none of them really go above that (except for maybe BG3). So the GOTY conversation feels a bit awkward because every game has some kind of asterisk to it. If you put Spiderman 2 or Alan Wake against games like Elden Ring or RDR2 or Doom, the former games would seem very forgettable.
