"cater to everyone/lowest common denominator" has always been terrible for art. there's a reason the original version of blade runner was panned on release, yet the versions without the studio mandated narration are held up as some of the best films of all time. you want to turn this into some culture war bullshit, but the fact of the matter is what people really hate is quota filling and corporate fluffing, to make it seem like they are "inclusive and for everybody," despite mass layoffs, shitty working conditions, racial/gendered turmoil within the companies, etc. no one likes a liar and all this bullshit is seen as very dishonest. the number of people who saw a female lead in the 00's or the 90s and went "UUGH this feminine bullshit is ruining EVERYTHING" was incredibly low, something changed in the last 10-15 years.

I love how the lazy way to design female characters is replace their original outfits with a leather jacket or a tank top (usually having them wear both). Claire in original re2 was wearing a red denim vest with black compression shirt but the "modern" sesign is tanktop and leather jacket.
I get that it looks cleaner, more digestible in a way but it's so bland. I don't think Maria's design in sh2 was supposed to be cool or stylish, it was supposed to seem almost inappropriate and outlandish, I mean even her little bit of belly fat makes her look out of place. She is the unconscious desire of James to sexualize his wife but when it's manifested in silent hill itself, she's uncanny and off-putting. She's not supposed to look like a hot girl at a club shew supposed to be a fricking tulpa tormenting the main character.

Ackhually, it is a little bit open to interpretation. I see Maria as more of what James wants Mary to be replaced with (including being alive and walking around). She is kind of his wish fulfilment, thus the 'Born from a Wish' story. It is more complicated than that but yes.

I had some hope, but I knew they were never going to be able to capture the tone of the original. The stiff and awkward -still can't tell if it's on purpose or not- facial expressions and dialogue are one of a kind and add so much to the game.

The problem with the cutscene wasn't Angela being "fat."
What was actually wrong was the lack of fog, trailing effects, or any of the atmosphere of the original scene. In fact, the voice acting and cinematography was also worse.
By voicing your concern for how one female model looks in one very unflattering angle (she's literally not even heavyset) you lose people. By making it out like SBI caused Bloober to delete the fog and make everything look like a B-movie, you just end up alienating normies.
This same exact thing happened with RE4 Remake. Instead of focusing on the lack of environmental ambience or poor acting, chuds focused on how Capcom removed a panty shot which didn't need to exist in the first place.
Compared to RE4's remake, this time around I'm actually seeing people say it looks overall worse.
