HF is just the bitter truth of growing up and I think it's a pretty obvious maturity filter for the people who dislike the route.

People often dismiss HF, but I think the progression is a natural consequence of both Shirou growing as a person and Nasu getting older. You should eventually get over your edgy teenager phase.
Sounds like a copout for plebs who can't handle a complex psychological narrative. You can take your "heroe's journey" and "coming of age" tropes and shove them up your ass. There was more to it than that and you know it.
I am not saying you have to accept Nasu's view, but this is the the interpretation the story clearly suggests.
Shirou has an emotional block preventing him from valuing his own desires, his own interests.
Due to survivors guilt or whatever.
And he pathologically helps those around him.
And all the other heroic spirits make it clear that archer is not a real hero. (This is the embodiment of emiya shirou's false ideals). And it is even canonically true that he's not a heroic spirit. He's merely a "guardian".
For shirou to pursue this path is a tragedy, even acknowledged as such at the end of UBW, since both he and Rin know that he is doomed for pursuing it, but that he has no choice.
It would be a bad end if not for the fact that it's shirou's least-bad end in the UBW route.
In HF, for one we have a classic heroic story with shirou as the protagonist (go to hell and save the girl).
(By the way the three routes have themes Heaven, Purgatory, Hell (ironically heaven's feel is the route about hell))
Shirou goes to hell and saves the girl and dies, but gets reborn and gets to live a happy life with the girl he loves (warts and all)

This is a continuation of what Nasu was trying to say in Kohaku's route. Kohaku didn't do much wrong. The Tohno clan is an abomination that shouldn't exist after their sins, even if Akiha is a good person. The worst thing she did was take Shiki, who wasn't involved in her suffering, and create a situation where he would fulfill her plans for revenge when the circumstances became favorable. The fact that her decisions were reasonable is what made her decision to forego her revenge in her route so meaningful. She didn't do anything wrong, but she also didn't do anything right. She just suffered due to the whims of the world and decided that suffering, even if justified, had no place in the world. Amazing redemption arc for an amazing character.

It's the story of Shirou going from a naive, self-destructive shonen wannabe-hero and a mature man with self-worth who actually saves someone important to him.
