Can someone explain to me why enemies will randomly turn invincible against your attacks? I am not joking, that's legit what is happening and I wanna understand the logic behind it.

Also; what is the point of kicks? They don't seem to deal damage and they don't seem to break guard or anything, and even if they did I wouldn't get to follow up on it.

NG has a ton of useless moves,

The point is equipping the armlet of potency and spamming the flail's kick combo.

It's so you attack at certain times and/or at certain angles.

Depends on the move in question, they all do damage and have different purposes based on that, as an example for the Dragon Sword the spin kick knocks enemies away, while the double kick has iframes and can extend combos.

They do break guard and you can follow up.

I love Nioh 1 and 2 but it just doesn't compare to the fun that is Ninja Gaiden, they need to make a 4th one

      >tfw can do izuna drop very easily in Ninja Gaiden but can't do it to save my life in Dead or Alive
I know they're two entirely different genres but it's still pretty fricked to me.

i think this only happens with flying swallow, but never played the original so maybe its different in there

And then there's the spider ninja who will literally just enter a mode where they dodge everything automatically. Preferably while spamming exploding kunai. I have no idea how you're supposed to fight them other than just getting lucky with their dodge AI
As fun as the game is I genuinely struggle to understand the mechanics

you can stun then with shurikens, but i just use the lunar to fight them

The game is so punishing that I feel actively discouraged from experimenting with weapons. Also there's a real lack of a dojo or training mode, unless I missed it. Hitting the air just doesn't really give enough of a response

yeah, the room right before the one with the electric has respawning enemies

Try to counterattack, or wait for a window between attacks. I had the same issue the first time I played it back in the day, until I started to treat it like a fighting game (trying to figure out the value of moves to hit enemies when they are on negatives, etc) of course it doesn't have to be overly complex, but once the flow of combat clicks, it's addictive as frick

I know exactly what you're talking about because the same thing happened to me just now.

Honestly, there is just too much to talk about with the mechanics for the player and what the enemies can do (mostly they can do everything the player can).
From your description I presume you got filtered already in the second chapter or whatever the fricking han's bar motorcycle encounter was in Ligma.
To put it simply, just standing and not even touching your controller you can perform over a dozen offensive actions in this game to frick up the enemy (with proper timing that is) - and again, from your description it sounds like you opted out to spamming light attack or flying swallow only.
There are so many options such as:
    1. Waiting for the enemy to attack - block and counter them
    2. Interrupting them with your sword before they attack
    3. Interrupting them with your side weapon before they attack
    4. Throwing them
    5. Jumping over them with wind path and slashing them
    6. Wall run attack (but not fricking flying swallow)
    7. Doing any kind of directional input to the side + attack that isn't just spamming xxx yyy
And this is just the basics, you could do such a thing like hit the dude, they block so you jump to the side before they swat you and do on-landing Y to counter them. Or just throw shurikens in air, don't remember if you could actually do on-landing Y afterwards that. It's been quite some time since I've played this game.
And indeed you can experiment in this game plenty because you have the main hub near muramasa's store in which enemies respawn.

They can't dodge in their recovery frames or your punish is too slow/too late.
