Yeah this game gets worse the more you play it. It loses so much steam about half way through and then you gotta force yourself to make those last few deduction just so you can confirm what you already knew. The whole point of a mystery game is that the big reveal is meant to be satisfying and clever.
>Mom, dad, I finally got a gig voicing for a video game? >My part? It's uh... 10 seconds of a guy who strains himself shitting before dying to a kraken
I'm really not sure what would benefit from this. The voice acting is already there. I guess the ship would have been very well modeled and conventionally visually appealing, but I prefer the actual style of the game, even if it was born from the need to hide the roughness.
That wouldn't make the game better. The only flaw is that almost every shipmate was spiked by a beast, and there's not much happening in the plot besides the mutiny and kidnapping. More interesting mysteries and unique deaths is the only room for improvement in Obra Dinn.
A lot of people (me included) thought he was too white looking, while the spiral /circular tatoos look more like celtic tatoos, rather than maori ones. Plus there's the curveball with "where's my frenchman?" "your mate was torn apart"
You don't need to know that. You just need to know that islanders have tattoos all over because they're primitives. He also has no last name, like he would if he was from a civilized country. He's about the most obvious character in the game, aside from the Captain himself.
>You just need to know that islanders have tattoos all over because they're primitives
?
tatoos were and still are extremely common with seamen in general, he's not even the only crew member with tatoos
>He also has no last name
Well yes, the list tells you that there's a Mabu from New Guinea, but that doesn't tell you anything about his looks.
Explain to my why this works better as a video game than as a VN or mystery novel or something. What, exactly, does this game do that could not be done in another medium? You don't run. You don't jump. There are no puzzles. You don't interact with anything. You can literally make a 3d popup book with each of the scenes in the game and nothing would be lost.
TLDR: This ""video game"" sucks donkey dicks and shouldn't exist
Even in a puzzle game people can enjoy atmosphere, music, spectacle etc. It wouldn't be fun if it was a picture book even though it could logically work. Not the worst bait in the world but better luck next time.
If I remember right there's also no way to fail or lose progress which I consider to be important if not necessary in a video game. Can't you just make guesses over and over without consequence?

It's fun but flawed and reputation is overblown here I think. Maybe I was disappointed because I expected a detective game but it isn't that. I like the concept more than the execution. The way the narrative unfolds visually is cool but it's the puzzle deduction aspect I find lacking. It's very simple when I expected a real brain teaser. Lots of missed potential that left me unsatisfied. I like its cheaper ripoffs more (roottrees and idol), shittier presentation but deeper as puzzle games.
the captain was a moron
His only failure was letting filthy Formosans to board his ship.
Agreed! Try Case of the Golden Idol next.
I wish it didn't have an anticlimax but I guess it makes sense.

*blocks your path*
>yfw "arr rook same" is an actual game mechanic
far right is easy since his hammock is numbered in an early scene. the rest you identify by footwear
>Mom, dad, I finally got a gig voicing for a video game?

homie THEY ALL CHINESE
at what point in development do you think he thought 'welp this is boring, better throw in monsters'
Seems like the type of game where everything would be plotted on paper before real development started
now just imagine if this was an actual fully developed AA game instead of made by one guy who insisted on doing everything himself

nta but I wish it was either longer or had more cases to solve (separate stories, even if sold as dlc's)
The game's definitely fine and complete as it is but the plotting and deductive path could have been improved on.

>now imagine if the game was shit
Why would i do that?
what the frick was his problem?
Why was one bed marked with an "X" instead of a number?
eXtra hammock
Why was Nichols such a pathetic little b***h?
artificial difficulty
an obvious Frenchman
It's one of the first ones I identified because he's the only New Guinean on board and those look like Pacific Islander tattoos
A lot of people (me included) thought he was too white looking, while the spiral /circular tatoos look more like celtic tatoos, rather than maori ones. Plus there's the curveball with "where's my frenchman?" "your mate was torn apart"
>Plus there's the curveball with "where's my frenchman?"
Wasn't the frenchman literally wearing the stereotypical shirt their sailors wore?
Easy, the prince of persia
now if only you could teleport to any scene after seeing it at least once, without having to go to the specific corpse every time
Remember when you saw them for the first time?
If you didn't instantly place Maba as the sole New Guinean, you're really stupid.
do i look like i know what a papa new guinean is?
his tatoos look nothing like new guinean tatoos though

Having a tattoo or three is a completely different level than having them all over your body
I thought New Guineans were short and brown though
I thought it was Madworld for a moment shame.
Mermaid breasts.

I guess i'm too stupid for this game because i spent like an hour on it and didn't know what the frick to do.
