The best time to watch speedruns is when a game is new. The runs aren't reset heavy with the route pretty much changing every other day. I don't know how people can watch someone grind the same old game just to shave a second off the WR that could take months of attempts.

They refused to cater to the big-name charismatic speedrunners like Trihex, Bonesaw, Patty, etc. and therefore ended up with an inferior product. Instead of working with those speedrunners they've chosen to make the event basically a place to advertise shitty 5-viewer twitch speedrunners (that usually suck at the game or are charisma vacuums). At its most abstract it is a story of one clique of people excluding the runners who are the most entertaining because of a vain need to "prop up" lesser known speedrunners, despite the fact that the entire marathon should be about making money for charity and not about helping lesser-known speedrunners.
I think it is because they want to keep the event clinical and in control of the organizers. If they worked with big speedrunners they would inevitably become faces of the event, and GDQ being as paranoid and hysterical about their safe image as they are don't want a situation where they do not control the faces of the event. Using mostly small speedrunners ensures that they remain detached from GDQ's image.
It turned way too corporate and the porn addict gooners don't help either, I still remember twitch doing a website wide announcement when siglemic got a wr run, those days are long gone. Doing multiple back-to-back from home marathons hurt it. If its just a stream of people streaming, why not just watch something else? It was fine the first time, but I think a big part of the fun is the interaction the live audience has with it.
The super serious nature the leadership tries to maintain has scared off many of the charismatic runners or just weird ones. A boring run can be made better by a fun runner and couch crew but they also seem to get banned from AGDQ or don't want to come back. Plus they seem to try and avoid cringe moments that are kind of the life and blood of the marathon.
There also seems to be far too many boring games run now. Its great to know my beloved 200 hour game from my childhood can be beat in 5 hours but its still boring to watch. It will be 10 minutes of glitching and abusing a certain mechanic and then 4 hours and 50 minutes of doing shit you can't skip. Or a game will have glitches that beat the game so quickly its just watching weird stuff happen without any context.
They need to bring back runners who can play off of a real and digital crowd, loosen up a bit, and do fun speed runs to watch.

Every year seeing their childhood games played in interesting ways for the first time, and now the average gamer has heard the word speed running at least a few times in their life, and have maybe seen one or two videos on youtube. Without a critical mass of new viewers, which were present in the past, interest in watching live events, let alone speed running in general, has begun to fade.
It's really funny seeing the mental gymnastics required when the Japanese equivalent gets MORE viewers now despite being entirely in Japanese and thus only watchable by a tiny minority of the planet. They've been having events just as long, why are theirs only getting bigger?

Nothing interesting happens the vast majority of the time. Speedrunning in general is more of a collaborative effort to analyse and optimise a game, rather than being a competition. So the more interesting stuff is seeing new exploits/skips being discovered rather than the actual runs themselves.
No one ever talks about this but one of the orgs they raise funds for, Doctors Without Borders, regularly ships thousands of illegals from Africa to Europe with their boats. So if you donate to this event you're funding human trafficking. I doubt the other funds go to cancer research at this point either.

The switch to online only made it completely pointless, because at that point it was the same thing as watching any of these speedrunners on their own channels but with a nonstop annoying donation announcer on top of it. Speedrunning has become generally more mainstream now, so the novelty of an event dedicated to it has pretty much worn off.

I think they call it "egg cracking" or something? I don't remember exactly, but the groomer population in the trans community take it as a competition to see how many they can "turn". The worst part is that to them it isn't even seen as this bizarre tribal psychological manipulation, it's "helping people find themselves" and "support". Trans-trenders are basically multi-level-marketing scammers, where instead of selling a product they sell psychosis.
Unironically the answer is because runs have become too optimized. The gameplay just isn't interesting to watch since most normies just want to see other people experience their favorite games through their eyes but when 90% of the game is being skipped there's no connection between the viewer and the streamer anymore especially if their favorite moments in said game are the ones being skipped.
It always was a very niche thing, and they are trying to push it like it's some e-olympics or some shit, while most of the videogames which are played don't appeal to an average player and there's a very little reason to watch it unless you're actually interested in the game at the first place

As per usual from American entertainment everything must be sterile and safe corporate garbage with more focus on reaching certain incentives rather than watching people run their favorite game. A lot of the freedom got taken away years ago by killing off the Twitch chat except for those who subscribed. In a way it felt magical to see some runner you like while everyone cheers him on with a basically unfiltered chat experience, but no no we must take the fun away and have our loyal subscribers abide to the rules by only spamming the same few sub emotes and we must ban those who ever so slightly go over the edge.
I hate those troony freaks as much as the rest of Ganker but not in the way that it ruins the event itself, but rather that they pollute the schedule with random garbage nobody cares or runs except for them. I don't know how many of the big runners from back in the day like Trihex still play something for GDQ every single year, but its sad to see that the fun runners have been banned, trooned out or left speedrunning entirety due to these circumstances.
Nowadays I occasionally tune in for ESA as the chat isn't gatekept by paying an unnecessary fee and the Ganker threads are typically more comfy than GDQ threads. Last summer I attended one of these events and it actually felt like a fun place to hang out without having to worry about strict management or forced humor. The worst ESA has to offer is having pronouns on stream or on the event badge, but this is common practice by now for every large event and thankfully it isn't enforced.

The best time to watch speedruns is when a game is new. The runs aren't reset heavy with the route pretty much changing every other day. I don't know how people can watch someone grind the same old game just to shave a second off the WR that could take months of attempts.

I think it is because they want to keep the event clinical and in control of the organizers. If they worked with big speedrunners they would inevitably become faces of the event, and GDQ being as paranoid and hysterical about their safe image as they are don't want a situation where they do not control the faces of the event. Using mostly small speedrunners ensures that they remain detached from GDQ's image.

Last time I ever watch GDQ they had a speedrun segment for fricking Final Fantasy 14, you know, an MMO. Watched out of curiosity and the stream crashed twice. Also as it turns out the fricking runner was just speedrunning a dungeon on his OP character.

I'll tune in for the occasional new game but everything else I really couldn't care for. My first GDQ was in 2013, and even back then people were saying it was no fun allowed, but it was all new to me and I ended up watching most runs and had a great time. Every event after that I haven't cared nearly as much since the wonder wore off.
I would still put it on my second monitor just to listen to , but it gives me anxiety.

I think there are three main things.
Doing multiple back-to-back from home marathons hurt it. If its just a stream of people streaming, why not just watch something else? It was fine the first time, but I think a big part of the fun is the interaction the live audience has with it.
The super serious nature the leadership tries to maintain has scared off many of the charismatic runners or just weird ones. A boring run can be made better by a fun runner and couch crew but they also seem to get banned from AGDQ or don't want to come back. Plus they seem to try and avoid cringe moments that are kind of the life and blood of the marathon.
There also seems to be far too many boring games run now. Its great to know my beloved 200 hour game from my childhood can be beat in 5 hours but its still boring to watch. It will be 10 minutes of glitching and abusing a certain mechanic and then 4 hours and 50 minutes of doing shit you can't skip. Or a game will have glitches that beat the game so quickly its just watching weird stuff happen without any context.
They need to bring back runners who can play off of a real and digital crowd, loosen up a bit, and do fun speed runs to watch.

In case of GDQ it probably is combination of activism of organizers and an attempt to access woke investor and advertiser wallets.

Nothing interesting happens the vast majority of the time. Speedrunning in general is more of a collaborative effort to analyse and optimise a game, rather than being a competition. So the more interesting stuff is seeing new exploits/skips being discovered rather than the actual runs themselves.
No one ever talks about this but one of the orgs they raise funds for, Doctors Without Borders, regularly ships thousands of illegals from Africa to Europe with their boats. So if you donate to this event you're funding human trafficking. I doubt the other funds go to cancer research at this point either.

Unironically the answer is because runs have become too optimized. The gameplay just isn't interesting to watch since most normies just want to see other people experience their favorite games through their eyes but when 90% of the game is being skipped there's no connection between the viewer and the streamer anymore especially if their favorite moments in said game are the ones being skipped.
It always was a very niche thing, and they are trying to push it like it's some e-olympics or some shit, while most of the videogames which are played don't appeal to an average player and there's a very little reason to watch it unless you're actually interested in the game at the first place

As per usual from American entertainment everything must be sterile and safe corporate garbage with more focus on reaching certain incentives rather than watching people run their favorite game. I don't need to be reminded about a one of a kind reward after every run that only the most loyal of donators will get.
A lot of the freedom got taken away years ago by killing off the Twitch chat except for those who subscribed. In a way it felt magical to see some runner you like while everyone cheers him on with a basically unfiltered chat experience, but no no we must take the fun away and have our loyal subscribers abide to the rules by only spamming the same few sub emotes and we must ban those who ever so slightly go over the edge.
I hate those troony freaks as much as the rest of Ganker but not in the way that it ruins the event itself, but rather that they pollute the schedule with random garbage nobody cares or runs except for them. I don't know how many of the big runners from back in the day like Trihex still play something for GDQ every single year, but its sad to see that the fun runners have been banned, trooned out or left speedrunning entirety due to these circumstances.
Nowadays I occasionally tune in for ESA as the chat isn't gatekept by paying an unnecessary fee and the Ganker threads are typically more comfy than GDQ threads. Last summer I attended one of these events and it actually felt like a fun place to hang out without having to worry about strict management or forced humor. The worst ESA has to offer is having pronouns on stream or on the event badge, but this is common practice by now for every large event and thankfully it isn't enforced.
Lastly, a lack of unironic cringe moments.

SANE THINGS THAT COULD HELP:
Reopen chat to the public since mod tools have improved a ton since the early years and they could still maintain their draconian control of the pro-trans narrative while letting the average viewer shitpost within reason
Add two bonus streams that operate on the "couch/runner hits a button to trigger a TTS read-out of a pre-approved donator comment" system we've seen used elsewhere, since this adds minimal duties to staff at a major boost to content:

>stream3 is a random couch in the practice room and anyone that is approved for a run can go there to play anything that isn't on the schedule
Replace the current racing format with one some anon suggested in a thread earlier this week:
