      >a lot of shitty and amateur design choices.

I would say something like this. Just about to finish the game, and it was a wildly inconsistent roller coaster ride. Sometimes the entire game is a slog, a lot of the combat mechanics are very underutilized and almost pointless, some break the game, and the platforming doesn't always feel good. However i still got 40 hours out of it and enjoyed the vast amount of my play time.

Level design, weapon diversity, progression, and sprites are all better in Dawn. Everything that matters is better in Dawn.

Even Bloodstained has far better level design despite being a half-baked clone of SOTN in some ways. The best things about Hollow Knight are the artstyle and music, and most people don't look past that and realize it's mostly copy-pasted platforms without much thought coupled with a few super meat boy tier platforming challenges. The game is hardly a metroidvania at all aside from the map being big.

          Anonymous

Care to explain why? The map has no real continuity, largely every area looks the same aside from the color shifting. You could easily chop the map into levels and not really notice it was suppose to be one big world.

            Anonymous

            Different Anon here,
You're probably going to need to define what you think constitutes a Metroidvania since loads of people have different opinions/definitions.
I consider HK a Metroidvania because a big part of the gameplay involves exploration, progression through getting mobility upgrades and then exploring previous areas with those new upgrades to pass obstacles that you couldn't pass the first time you encountered them. Progression tied to map completion is also a pretty common element of the genre.
            >every area looks the same aside from the color shifting
This is technically subjective but I pretty strongly disagree. Or at least, I disagree based on the assumption that you would claim that Super Metroid or Symphony did not have the same problem. HK has different biomes, many of which have unique hazards and different level design (Depths are more claustraphobic while something like Kingdom's Edge is much more open; some zones are more vertical while others are more horizontal, etc...).

              Anonymous

I believe it's the bare minimum of what you can consider a metroidvania. The defining games of the word are Super Metroid and SOTN. What Hollow Knight lacks is unique rooms and backgrounds with widly varying shapes that define every area as it's own thing. Most everything in the game is a flat black platform, and aside from the progression parts that require new powers to stitch the areas together, you could look at them like levels in many other platformers. Mega Man has upgrades and unique enemies on each stage, but if I stiched those levels together and required you to access them by getting weapons from other levels, it wouldn't really feel like a metroidvania would it?

        Anonymous

        >half-baked clone of SOTN
Why do people say this? It very obviously rips off Aria/Dawn of Sorrow way more.

          Anonymous

I really did enjoy Bloodstained, but come on, we know that's what Iga wanted. To try to make the spiritual successor to SOTN by starting a new series. Besides, most of the games that followed SOTN just build upon what it already did and follow the same formula.

            Anonymous

I genuinely do not understand why people compare it to SotN over the Sorrow games other than SotN being the 'famous' one. The plot and Gameplay are both very obviously closer to Aria and I don't see anything uniquely SotN in it.
            >Spiritual successor to SOTN
They had that already. It was called every Igavania since SOTN. Aria, Harmony, and Portrait are all very obviously trying to be spiritual successors to SOTN and there are strong influences in OoE and Lament.

If you created a 3D exploration game with multiple different goggles and shooting while exploring an alien planet, would you say it's a spiritual successor to Super Metroid instead of Metroid Prime just because Super Metroid was what inspired Prime?

              Anonymous

My point is exactly that SOTN is "the famous one." It would make sense that Bloodstained more closely resembles the most recent Igavanias since that is how the game design has developed to that point. But people more often refer to SOTN because it's the one that started it all and the most people played it.

                Anonymous

That's moronic though. So I can't make a spiritual successor to Super Mario Sunshine because both Galaxy and 64 were the ones that people actually know/remember? Even if my game had water management as a core mechanic and was all about cleaning up a tropical resort world?
                >It would make sense that Bloodstained more closely resembles the most recent Igavanias since that is how the game design has developed to that point
It doesn't resemble the most recent ones though. The game very clearly takes its inspiration from the Soul system of Aria/Dawn while not really taking much from Portrait or Ecclesia. Hell, the map design is also way more similar to Aria/Dawn since it isn't nearly as linear as Order and doesn't have self contained 'worlds' like Portrait. Really the only thing the game takes from non-Aria titles is the idea of the protagonist being in/from a special order which is Ecclesia through and through. Even then the idea of absorbing powers of demons and potentially being corrupted by them is reminiscent of Aria.
Bloodstained isn't a spiritual successor to Igavanias in general, it is very specifically taking the vast majority of its cues from Aria/Dawn.

My point is that Iga naturally borrows things from other games he has made when making new ones. Even if he drew a lot of inspiration from one game, he probably wasn't fixated on just one when he designed Bloodstained. I just said SOTN because it's what put him on the map and allowed him to create those other games. I'm not sure why you're fixated on the fact I mentioned SOTN, naturally people will talk about it in the context of all Igavanias.

that's not a metroidvania. It's a boss rush game like cuphead with metroidvania filler inbetween just to connect the bosses. The game design is extremely basic for a metroidvania and the game design clearly focuses on being tohou bu platformer 2D

Is is a metroidvania. You can argue bosses are the main focus, and you'd be correct, but it's incredibly disingenuous and outright incorrect to claim "it's not a metroidvania". The 'Alternate' mode is literally designed around forcing you to explore the world for upgrades since the bosses don't scale with you.

People are tricked into thinking things are good all the time. Saying people think it's a MASTERPIECE is just elevating it higher than those people in your head do.
