I don't see how the Tiberian story is any more absurd than the plot of the original StarCraft, as for Red Alert its only after the original where things got absurd.
The Tiberian story wasn't reliant on time travel with Dawn it was a geopolitical conflict between two global superpowers over Tiberium inspired by the various conflicts of the 90s, hardly an absurd premise. Sun was a continuation of that conflict with the resource the two factions fighting over having drastically effected the environment of earth and its inhabitants.
Any connection Red Alert had originally as a prequel is hardly referenced by the later Tiberian games or its concepts of time travel.
As far as I've seen of the original StarCraft, I'm on Episode II now replaying it, I feel it has the same approach to its story as the Tiberian games had in that it has an air of seriousness to it.
At first i didn't really like simply calling it RTS as a term but after explaining it to friends it makes discussing these type of games so much easier
