I bet you can't even name a single time you played a visual novel game that wasn't either some sort of scifi plotline with flowcharts OR some sort of erotic dating sim(also with flowcharts).

True oldgays will remember.
There's sex in it but not really the point
Mah homies
That's not a VN, it's a KN.
Oh narcissu was an oldgay thing? I thought it was decent but not mindblowingly good. Did get me to visit awajishima tho.
A true masterpiece needs no flowchart.
didn't this have a relaly depressing ending? i can't remember anything about it but i remember being really sad after reading it
There's an anime and I think a later story that closes everything off. The ending of the game itself is depressing, but the guy drags himself to another city and ends up living to old age, becoming a storyteller just like the android girl.
I've played plenty of Ace Attorney
Fate stay/night
I just want to be clear that just because the game doesn't let you see the flowchart, doesn't mean the flowchart doesn't exist.
>saving a pixel image as a jpg
How dare you
Jpg > png
the real answer is bmp
>he doesn't use tiff
16 colors bros, it's gif or it's nothing
key exists
you're right, I can't name any since I have never played a VN
The correct genre of most of these is ADV. The reason visual novel came into being is cause Leaf wanted to call 3 of their games their 'visual novel' series to copy Chun-soft and their 'Sound Novel' line-up of adventure games. Later Hirameki USA decided to port a bunch of DVD-PG ADV and use Leaf's visual novel branding on them to make them sound more sophisticated than they are to a western audience (kinda like how comics are called graphic novels to make nerds feel less insecure).
Very few ADV are actually a novel (just text you read from beginning to end without any flags, parameters, or routes hidden underneath).
im playing this rn
hello chad
Monster Girl Quest
It's a straight line without flow charts
You're just a boomer who played ancient stuff like Yu-No on PC or PC98 (and that's fine).
But this is 2023, and there's tons of VNs that are extremely linear, i can name Umineko and Chaos Head, Muv-Luv, Death Mark which are super linear off the top of my head.
Anyway as a 30s year old boomer i too love that old PC98 soulful art
yeah i dunno the point of this thread it's harder to name a game WITH a flowchart these days
baby needs a flowchart even just to figure out the point of this thread
NTA, but goddamit anon you made me chuckle
well.. i meaaaan, I guess you could say a few popular games like 999 and VLR have a flowchart.
Maybe Raging Loop would count too, to some extent. The Letter also has a huge flowchart that depicts how the stuff flows
But yes they're a bit more uncommon lately
raging loop was fun, even with that shitty artstyle, I don't know what you call that
What i disliked the most about Raging Loop is the lack of CG pics and Haruaki's voice was SOO damn bad. He felt monotone, just a bad voice actor. The others were fine, but not him
The artstyle while not amazing or even great, wasnt terrible
I'm just going to go ahead and brag about the fact that the scenario where you played as the wolves and were challenged by that fatass sherlock holmes war photographer, I literally made the right dialogue choice at every fork in the road, on the first go. I beat that fatso fair and square without even having to save and reload.
that's the only time that ever happened
>and Haruaki's voice was SOO damn bad
Honestly I can't remember disliking his voice. The monotone style fits his character so I never had a problem with it. Then again I played a few VNs before this where the main character wasn't voiced so at this point I was simply glad he had a voice to begin with.
It’s tons of fun. I think the art was fine too, it got the job done. I’m one of those guys that got super soured on the game by the ending though, what were they thinking with that shit.
the artstyle was nice
>raging loop
how bad is the translation?
Raging loop had perfectly fine translation actually from what i recall ..
source: I know japanese and i know what they say vs what's being translated/localized.
This isnt trash "translations" like Xenoblade 2 or Fire Emblem Engage where they get all liberal and completely change from japanese to English.
>Using Engage as an example and not Fates
Engage's localization changes are pretty tame besides some pointless censorship. It's nowhere close to the scale of completely making shit up and rewriting entire character personalities. I really would like newbies to stop talking about this.
You're right anon, i exagerated a bit with Engage... Engage's translation/localization wasn't "terrible" , but it wasnt great either. I've seen worse.
i can't speak for Fates cause i never played it, but i shudder to think how much worse it is..
It's more than just a bit of an exaggeration to say it's completely changed in translation which is much more true of Xenoblade 2. It's a mediocre one for sure, as you say, but it's pretty annoying to see it constantly brought up as a terrible localization when there are ones far more deserving of the scrutiny within the same series. Even more recently than Fates, Three Houses was heavily rewritten, sometimes in completely nonsensical ways that wouldn't even appeal to an English audience. Strangely, 3H is almost never brought up in these kinds of discussions. Almost like this tends to be used as shitposting to discredit a game as a whole...
cool, i'll read it then
Kara no Shoujo 1 and 2.
Played them last month.
YOLO
>night slave
someone told me those chicks have dicks, can anyone confirm
higurashi wasn't sci fi and it was one of the biggest visual novels on Ganker and Ganker. i still remember way back before it got an official translation i had to wait on some dude in '08 or '09 who translated it a single chapter at a time. it was excruciating when the japanese text started coming up.
Ace attorney?
>OR some sort of erotic dating sim
anon that's literally the whole fricking point of the genre
if i wanted to watch a non-erotic powerpoint presentation i'd go put in a few more hours at work
Boomer Anime girls with big hairy pubes
If this is what's considered as "boomer anime chicks" then I'm all in.
Zoomer anime chicks like pic rel hold no candle.
Most anime girls do not have hairy pubes due to the way Bishoujo anime originated from child porn. Japan had obscenity laws and it turned out a prepubescent girl's slit isn't considered obscene, so people were photographing those cause they couldn't photograph hairy pubes. And this photography caused everyone young to develop a paipan-fetish. Only a few artists, like Urushihara Satoshi, try to draw hairy pubes, but he's largely alone. Tech-arts also tried to release a game in the early 2000s with an option to give the girls hairy pubes, but no one cared for that option, so all the girls henceforth became paipan.
The girls in the OP are most likely paipan cause all of these ADV are e-girlcon. The games that even depict pubic hair are few and far between.
>Most anime girls do not have hairy pubes
>Most
Which ones do?
Doki Doki
>AI-generated fake 80/90's style art
I fricking hate this.
kys, troony
>I bet you can't even name a single time you played a visual novel game
You're absolutely right, I can't.
man i kinda miss when sci fi anime was all about girls flying through space wearing bondage gear
i rewatched all of dirty pair during lockdown and it was fricking great
I can, it's not a dating sim, it's a becoming happy sim
House in Fata Morgana.
There, neither a scifi or a dating sim.
that's a time travel/multigenerational one
that means it's got a flow chart. and it's also got women which probably means it's an eroge too
>that's a time travel/multigenerational one
Not scifi
>that means it's got a flow chart.
Flowchart for what? It's a very linear VN with multiple choices only gets you bad ends
>and it's also got women which probably means it's an eroge too
It's not eroge
wrong
Fricking Umineko.
Does utawarerumono count because I loved the series enough to replay the trilogy twice.
I like Galaxy Angel
milfy...
Great girl but not so much a great heroine
>game is pretty kino
>get to the hentai scenes
Why did the pc98 mandate hentai being required?
It's largely the only way your game could sell. Compile and Falcom could sell their games without pornographic elements, and those guys were alone with bad localisations of western games.
I can't name a time when I ever played a visual novel.
Kuroinu. The redux translation is kinda botched but eh it's tolerable.
Is pic related game really any good?
