Name one thing Cuphead did that they have a trademark on? If anything Cuphead was just coping another art style already

Cuphead was literally a ripoff of old cartoons AND a ripoff of Contra. Someone making something similar is just good for the gander

So if I made a 2D platformer called Super Marty-O Bros about 2 Sicilian electricians saving the Fungal Empire, that's okay?

Then why did Nintendo sue the creators of the Super Gianna Sisters?

              Anonymous

Nintendo sues everyone. They don't care, they have lawyers on retainer and they know small companies can't fight back. This is what disney does all the time. You might win if you go to court, but it is better to just give up before you are stuck in legal fees.

Nintendo are fricking idiots and sue-happy. there are many games that were inspired by one another and does not mean to be a 1;1 clone. Imagine if gaming companies were still like that back in the day. Indies would be dead.

      >1929: Disney launches its 'Silly Symphony' cartoons to wide acclaim.
      >Soon after, competitors launch the Swing Symphony, Happy Harmonies, Merrie Melodies, and Looney Tunes brands of cartoons, among others.
This is the style that Cuphead used as inspiration. From a historical standpoint, the 'clone' is just as important as the original product, in some ways even more so.

When its traditionally animate3d its not too bad, but there's just an air of cheapness to it, like when its clearly done with puppets/rigging, and the sound design is weak. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0QvkorLPPc

with all those missing sound effects, i would've assumed it was an alpha build you'd find on a steam next fest but if that footage is the final game, that's disgraceful.

the artstyle wasn't new when cuphead used it.
bringing that artstyle to video games WAS new.
this game using cuphead's art style and, judging from the screenshot, cuphead's same genre and gameplay is pretty hackish.
if the game is good it's good, i don't think they're necessarily encroaching on people who wanted to play cuphead but now they'll play this instead, but it does feel like they stole someone else's idea and made their own knockoff. not very sovl if you ask me.

      >bringing that artstyle to video games WAS new
We had Steamboat Willie games, there was Peawiener from Skullgirls, hell there was even Bendy and the Ink Machine out long before Cuphead became a thing. Its not new to use that style in video games

        Anonymous

Steamboat willie does not attempt to be faithful and is pixel art anyways. Peawiener is smei-close but she's also a single character. You don't encompass an artstyle with 1% of your games assets.

WOW that sounds design is ass
since literally half of the boss stuff doesn't make any noise I'll give them the benefit of the doubt that it isn't done
for a failed Kickstarter it does look okay visually even if it doesn't hold a candle to cuphead
that easy mode looks beyond braindead
it's on the uninspired side, but the MCs look good it's a good idea to give them plenty of context animations

This is what happens when your peers are incapable of telling you to step up, they showed it to their friends and no one dared to tell them that is a terrible copy.
Even after the backlash they never changed a thing.

          Anonymous

On a technical level it's more than passable. Issue here comes from not understanding the medium. There is no point in making pretty sprites and walkcycles if things are not interacting with each other. There is no point in making halfscreen bosses if they do not engage a player. There is no point in making silly sound effects if they are not adding to the fun of the game.
People who made it would benefit a frickton from proper tutelage and possibly even make a good game. As of now they seems to not understand videogames at all and struggle with a lot of animation basics.

These 'rip-off' discussions really expose the autisitcs and low-IQs that can't identify intent. There's a difference between being 'inspired' and blatantly copying. No-one is saying Cuphead invented the '30s cartoon aesthetic, but this game is clearly trying to ride off its coattails. It's the same with the Genshin shit - the duplicitous chinks can act innocent all they want, but they were blatantly emulating Zelda's presentation (never mind the paraglider, open-world, and plinky-plonky piano music every fricking game suddenly had after BotW).

This reminds me of the PS All-Stars debacle. The issue wasn't that Nintendo 'invented' the mascot brawler genre; the issue was that Sony obviously wanted that sweet Smash money, and lazily copied Nintendo without understanding why Smash was as successful as it was.

      Anonymous

Bonus points for Playstation Allstars having the marketing force of a wet turd, since Playstation has simply never had the brand and mascot recognition on an individual software level that Nintendo (Smash by extension) has. Closest thing Playstation had to a "Mario" was Crash Bandicoot for a very long time and Crash was already dead by the time of PSA
