Is Arcade Classics Anniversary Collection (Steam) good for a beginner? It's kinda cheap when it's on sale.
Actually, if you know the genre, those are all pretty basic. If you really want to talk "lesser known" shmups, look into Graze Counter, Fuzzical Fighter, and Dead In Vitro.
i want to be good at shmups so bad but I'm not autistic enough to track all the little flashy lights. I'm pretty decent at starcraft and boomer shooters and fighters but this is the one genre I just can't understand.
great little game. for me it's the perfect beginner's shmup.
it's so easy and generous even those who have no experience with the genre can get the good ending in just a week, all while still getting the gist of these games. where's my fricking hard mode tho
How even? The game doesn't become challenging until stage 2 on normal and halfway through stage 3 on easy. And that's if you're playing for chains. Easier if you're just playing for shootin' game.
Is this a good video to follow if I want to get into shmups?
Also is it okay to play the Touhou series out of order of release? Are there some entries I should play before others?
2hu is unironically the way to go if you want to git gud at bullet hells specifically.
Also, this guy's video is a good start for gitting gud at the shmup genre as a whole:
>2hu is unironically the way to go if you want to git gud at bullet hells specifically.
Surely those skills will carry over into most shmups, no? Also the technical micrododging shit seems to be the most intimidating aspect of shmups so I thought to get comfortable with it first.
Btw I'm emulating a couple different shmups currently and they're all kicking my ass.
Just start with Imperishable Night, it's the easiest 2hu. Tap-dodging and moving in the "U" shape described by the video posted by
2hu is unironically the way to go if you want to git gud at bullet hells specifically.
Also, this guy's video is a good start for gitting gud at the shmup genre as a whole:
I think 8 or 10 are the easiest touhou games (I haven't played past 14, though) so those are probably good starting points. I started with 10 and ended up switching to 8 and played that until I 1cc'd it. Then I did the extra stage. You will get good at them if you just sit and play one. Of course you will be memorizing the patterns to make those specific fights easier, but you will start to notice all the little tricks on how to handle certain cards. Most blanket and simple advice I can give is: when you feel like a certain attack is just impossible, try moving very slowly and see what happens. 95% of the bullets on screen are just there to make you nervous.
The Taito Rayz chronology is coming to Pc and is already available on consoles M2 did the port it has 2 frames of input lag which is exceptionally low.
I am hoping it's $20. Anything higher than $20 is a no for me. I'm tired of spending $30+ on both of the Darius games and the Deathsmiles bundle on Steam.
Unfortunately it’s almost full retail price the upside is that its 3 games
Ray force
Ray crisis
Ray storm
And hd updates for crisis and storm but yeah it’s pricey.
Here's your mecha shmups:
Hyper Duel
Psyvariar 2
Bangai-O (Dreamcast version)
M.U.S.H.A.
Robo Aleste
There are more, these are just off the top of my head.
I grew up on RAPTOR : CALL OF SHADOWS and EINHANDER.
I never see people talking about the PS2 release of Silpheed. Surely, someone else played it.
I haven't played a shmup in years, though. My favorite one was probably TUMIKI Fighters, which was just some freeware combination of a shmup and Katamari Damacy.
I'd love to play a good shmup again but it feels like the genre is saturated with shit
What's a good one to get into? I haven't touched a single 2hu, either
>My favorite one was probably TUMIKI Fighters, which was just some freeware combination of a shmup and Katamari Damacy
I'd recommend Blast Works for the Wii, it's a more fleshed-out version of Tumiki Fighters and goes 4-player.
QP Shootin!! is good for beginners because its short and when you kill an enemy their bullets disappear.
Bullet Soul is like that, too. The original version is kinda meh, though, but Bullet Soul: Infinite Burst is great. It's on Switch, too.

ikaruga is weird because it’s a vertical shmup with the gimmicks of a horizontal shmup and pretty much no other danmaku are like that
Played the superior sequel?
Ikaruga is very hard yeah. Took me 80 or so hours to 1cc it. I have no clue how this game is so popular when it's a hardcore shmup by most standards, there's no i-frames, you have to score well for extra lives, & you have shit like the wheel in stage 4 that can take several hours alone just to learn how to pass it.
But yeah Radiant Silvergun is even crazier. I think the average Gankerirgin could 1cc Ikaruga on normal if he cared but 1ccing RSG is a feat of autistic dedication
Took me 50 hours to 1CC Ikaruga, and 50 hours to 1-credit the first stage of RSG. It's hard as hell, but I just can't tear myself away from it.
I quit after the first level because I found it dull
beat the first level, you have seen all the rest of the game has to offer
i bought ikaruga because i saw casuals like metaljesusrocks etc raving on about it so i assumed it must be pretty accessible... holy shit Black person i think the furthest i got without the continues (which nullifies your run) was like the 2nd level. I played through the rest of the game with continues to see what it was like and it is fricking insane and i consider myself not completely inept at shmups. I nearly have 1CCd imperishable night before. Fricking normies recommended Ikaruga to me and made me look like an butthole. No wonder these casuals only ever show the first level of any game they are talking about...

it is pretty difficult, I tried it many times but furthest I could ever get was to level 4 and then it really gets very difficult, I guess these games were just made to take people's money anyway
Frick, you just made me google search for "castle shikigami 4." I'm guessing you meant the recent Shikigami 2 port? Does it have the PS2 version's so-awful-it's-amazing English dub, or no?
I keep trying to get into shmups but I can't
The static nature of the enemies and levels, the autistic community, the lack of support by devs, the completely terrible and boring in design in most of them etc etc
It's the perfect control system, homie. One button does it all.
Rapid tap: rapidfire.
Rhythmic tap: lightning shot.
Hold down: absorb bullets.
Release before meter drains out: send bullets back out.
Holding a direction while releasing: send the bullets in the opposite direction.
Holding button until meter drains out: Screen-clearing blast.
It's fricking ingenious.
Think again, bud. I started playing it back in 2004, four (4) years before Xoxak's "Cave Tribute" video. It's only dogshit to spear-chucking porch monkeys who can't wrap their heads around it.

The game is straight badly designed dogshit, simple as

Play a shmup that isn't dogshit.

I just played and beat Jamestown for the first time last week. Priddy gud.
I turn it on play for like 6 minutes and turn it off. To be fair I thought it was a racing game when I bought it tho
If you press the A button you change colors and absorb the bullets.

Bangai-O (Dreamcast version)
M.U.S.H.A.

Blazeon

They should do more Cave remixes. The Progear remix is pretty good. Maybe they could touch on Taito too.
Also these ones as well.

What does this new shitty gay copypasta even mean? This is my third time seeing it show up with absolutely zero elaboration.
it is pretty difficult, I tried it many times but furthest I could ever get was to level 4 and then it really gets very difficult, I guess these games were just made to take people's money anyway
This game is meme shit, don't play it unless you want to.
>This game is meme shit
18+ website, come back later.
Ikaruga and Ketsui are always games that posers always talk about for some reason
They're very different. Ikaruga is a puzzle game. Ketsui is a shmup, and unlike Ikaruga, it's fun to play it for score. Also, go play Mars Matrix.
>Ketsui is a shmup, and unlike Ikaruga, it's fun to play it for score.

No amount of revisionism will make that true.
Also, learn to copy/paste if you're too mad to actually type. "sorce" isn't a word.

It's a hard fricking game. Beat it on Easy first, then work your way up.
What was the last game you 1cc'd?
Mine was Graze Counter, pretty easy.
Technically Psyvariar 2, but only because I can't reach the level-up threshold for accessing Gluon. My run ends after Eta.
I don't go for 1cc but for no miss instead
Mine was Andro Dunos
Ikaruga on Xbox 360 about 15 years ago.
