Sonic 1 is bad frrr no cap. Unleashed is the goated best.
Fr?
U buggin bruh, it's Sonic Heroes lowkey
>sonic heros
found the boomer
t. quirked up white boi
that's cap dawg, sonic 3 & knuckles goes harder than midleashed, the GOAT knuckles was introduced in sonic 3
Green Hill is the only good zone
every other zone ranges from mediocre to terrible
Sonic 1 is truly "just meh". It has too many outright bad levels and not enough plain good ones. That said, it's still worth playing at least once.
youre talking about Sonic 2
Both 1 and 2 look bad when compared to 3&K but they are still worth playing through at least once.
Wouldn't replay either over 3&K though, it's just a better game.
Level design bad, art mid, concept S tier
Trying to be Mario still
>art mid
sonic was pretty much the best looking thing on the machine in 1991 lol
Coming from a NES at the time I thought Sonic 1 was some kind of fricking magic game from the future.
spring yard is pretty good, other than the elevators
pretty sure you can skip most of them (maybe all? there's at least two I always end up on)
only levels I really dislike are Scrap Brain 3 (there's a skip that I can't remember how to do, so I end up having to go through the level, it sucks), Marble 3 (IIRC, it's the only one with mandatory waiting in it? there might be a skip), and I guess arguably all of Labyrinth (this frickin level has more spikes than frickin' Scrap Brain, but you have to navigate that shit with fricking water controls)
really though, S1 is probably the only game of the classic trilogy with quite so many parts that I really just want to fricking skip outright
For SB3 all you have to do is press the button and roll down the sliding floor before it reaches the other side. Shaves off 4 minutes thank god
I don't even know how to do that level normally. If you fall into the deeper areas of the level you're just dead, you're not getting out before you drown
If you fall I don’t even try to attempt it I just kill myself and restart the level
Sonic 1 is a fine game, but Sonic 2 is actually fun.
The game did its best to not let you go fast
Sonic 2 moving to two acts per zone was probably the best decision they made. I'm mostly "eh" with Sonic 1, but a lot of that is due to you being tired of the location by the time you hit the third act.
According to Miyamoto, it's rough around the edges.
Full agree with him on this quote. Sonic 1 has soul but does have a few problems here and there that get fixed in the sequels (lack of good reward for collecting the emeralds, zones too long with 3 acts, many zones slowing you down) but the game isn't bad at all, just a first entry in a series. Mario had the same problem- very good game, but it has a few problems that Mario 3 and Mario World end up fixing.
Then he went on to say he wish he made Nights, I guess saying Sonic Team peaked in the 90s is the most popular opinion out there for a good reason I can only imagine how much more Sega would have given to videogames the japanese suits didn't go full moron
>(laughs)
Wow, holy shit, a decent opinion from Miyamoto. Then again, he formed it in the 90s and it's not about a game he has any control over, so its odds were pretty stacked.
You can't get me to like Labyrinth or Act 3 of Scrap Brain. The latter was so bad they put in a route to get it over with in thirty seconds. Otherwise I actually think Marble and the first two acts of Scrap Brain outdo most of Sonic 2. Marble is incredibly underrated and only gets shit because Green Hill sets unrealistic expectations. It's also way harder the Spring Yard and Starlight which should have been the second and third zones respectively.
Starlight is there for a reason, as a breather from the previous intense zone. The placement is perfect.
And for me 1 in general is just better than 2 in almost every way, especially the music.
It's the best of the megadrive games, and it's the second best sonic game overall (After Sonic 1 on the Master System).
Special Stages
Mania>1>2>3K
Blue spheres have never been fun to me, and I’m so used to taxman Sonic 2 where the special stages are actually enjoyable and not garbage
In no universe is that dizzying, physics-inconsistent abomination that Sonic 1 calls a "Bonus Stage" actually better than any that came after it. It's one of the few minigames you actually have to somewhat memorize to clear because if you don't know which of the 3 identical pits you're careening into is the one that won't make you instantly lose, then better luck next time.
Sonic 2 bonus stages...
> Tails loses your rings.
>> Tails loses your rings.
do people really ? i always play with sonic & tails in 2 but never have any problems with the emeralds. maximum amount of rings i let tails grab is 10, so if he loses them it doesn't matter
Best special stage is from 3D Blast
3d blast fricking ruled
>early Sonic Team and early Traveller Tales collaborating
i liked 3D Blast too
The music was great* (Rusty Ruin and Volcano Valley especially), and a bunch of it was technically impressive, but god was it not that fun to play.
*on MD at least
It had a great aesthetic and great music but it really wasn't very fun to play
3d blast is among my favorite sonic games... if the "no flickies" mod is on, fun but brainless game with amazing music in that scenario
otherwisei don't think i have beaten 3d blast legitimately and i probably never will, flicky chasing sucks balls
If you're five.
Once I finally played these in Origins I knew I could never go back
>Special Stages
3K>CD>1>Chaotix>Mania>power gap>3D Blast>2
Mania Black folk need to be lynched
>Mania Black folk need to be lynched
Stay mad Sonic Team, make a good game for once and there wouldn’t be as many Maniabros
>Chaotix
>Not at the bottom
You could make your shitpost less obvious anon, you'd probably get more (You)s.
Mania>1>CD>3K>2
Someone is working on that, Sonic Studio.
Nicccee
There's also a twitter in case you want to keep up to date with the project. Yes twitter is shit, but sadly it's the only place where the dev seems to actually post updates
https://twitter.com/SonicStudioProj
I think it's better than Sonic 2 honestly. I think the only thing that stuck out to me as actually bad when I replayed it in Origins is that three acts of Marble Zone is too much, and by Act 2 you're just getting all those same traps again and you're just tired of them by that point. But besides that I like the level, I like all its gimmicks even if they result in you having to stop and wait.
Sonic 1 has always been a true 7/10.
>Enemy and map design is counter-intuitive to the player's mechanics
>Zone 2 is outright bad
>Looks fantastic, sounds fantastic, feels fantastic
They nailed everything including the controls, but then the maps forcing interactions with enemies too often just ruins all of it.
Spikes are an issue in a few spots but overall they're not bad or good.
7/10 games are good but Sonic 1 in particular just isn't worth the frustration.
>no bad levels outside of spring yard
>spring yard
>bad
Bobby Brown... Educate this FRICKWIT
Green Hill is great, the other stages not so much. Starlight is nice. I think it's somewhat unfinished, spaecially Scrap Brain.
>spring yard
>bad
You fricking wot.
It’s trash mate
Even with the shortcuts Spring Yard is a bumbling mess of a level and I’m tired of pretending it isn’t
I cope by going to level select and skipping to a better level
for me, it's sparkling zone :3
>not Clock Ork Zone
Back to Sonic 1 8bit
>he thinks i'm still using a dumb old GAY gear in [current year] instead of the glorious game.com
heh...
>mind first comes to game gear
>NOT MASTER SYSTEM
LITERAL BABBY CONFIRMED
Sonic CD is better than 2.
CD is the best in the series.
You spelled Sonic Spinball wrong, m8
do you consider spring yard as the baddest level of sonic 1? what the frick is wrong with you?
It’s not a good level period
Not as much a slog as Labyrinth but it’s bottom tier
People simp for Spring Yard but never name any good qualities besides the music
The experience of sonic 1 doesn't tie together into something that rewards you for coming back to it over the course of years. In other words you can't go fast and it sucks dick.
>This destroys the Sonic 1 gay
How cute. So that is how kids play Sonic these days.
>Doesn't include the part of my webm.
And no, not a single child played it like this back then.
?t=325
lol
it's a good opportunity for the runner to take a small break and drink a glass of water to stay hydrated 🙂
You literally can't make that section go any faster than in the webm morons, good job outing yourselves.
>he can’t speed run past that shit
Cope
I really hope you saved that webm and didn't make it.
Either way you're a massive fricking autistic loser, but it's just a matter of scale.
Literally no one thinks sonic 1 is the best in the series.
Sonic 1 is the best in the series.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
YOU CAN'T JUST THINK THAT
This.
And the gays who complain about it are the same ones who say that Sonic is nothing but holding left.
*fixes your game*
that's fake right? iirc, i got robotnik giving me the finger when i tried to play with sonic 1 + knuckles
it's a romhack made by one of the guys who would go on to make sonic mania and the hd remasters of 1-3k
You can press a button at that screen and play Blue Spheres with S1+K. But yeah, that pic is a fan hack.
Not fake, it's a mod by Stealth.
Seriously, the talent behind Sonic Mania, the remasters on Android that went on to be featured in Sonic Origins, it comes from guys at Sonic Retro doing their ambitious ROM hacks.
Play the glorious Sonic 1 remaster with HD, Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles playable, save files, AND many glitches fixed and MORE
…only on mobile…

It'll be a matter of time and a decomp of Retro Engine RSDK v5 will happen, so you can play an unfricked version of Sonic 3 & Knuckles.
Or just play Sonic 3 A.I.R. like everyone else has.
https://sonic3air.org/
>a decomp of Retro Engine RSDK v5 will happen
>Q: Will you do a decompilation for Sonic Mania?
>A: No. Sonic Mania is much bigger and requires that I'd decompile not only how the (far more complex) RSDKv5 works, but also all 600+ objects work.
it's not entirely infeasible but i'm pretty sure it'll take a lot longer than anyone expects. not sure if taxman and/or stealth have helped with this at all
Oh right, I was thinking about RSDK v5 in the context of Sonic 3 & Knuckles in Sonic Origin specifically.
Rubberduckycooly has been looking at the data for that release specifically anyway.
Taxman and Stealth are unlikely to open-source the engine that's used to power commercial Sonic the Hedgehog / SEGA games now, it's their own proprietary game engine and those are hard as hell to develop.
knuckles is not really fun to play as, the low jump sucks
CD > 1 > 3 > 2
you know I'm right
Alright listen up you schmucks
This is the truth and I’m tired of pretending it isn’t
>Marble not being C at best
>Star Light not being A at least
>Spring Yard not being B at least
Factual
Here’s a factual music list too
CD isn’t up there because it exists in its own higher plane of existence
I understand why only S3&K gets its levels divided up but Scrap Brain 3 is so distinctly bad that I'd want to rank it separately.
Nah that’s for music Anon
Also
>he doesn’t know about the secret route
>Hydrocity 1 is B
>Hydrocity 2 is S
What? I don't care about the individual ranking, I'm wondering why the two very similar tracks are ranked so differently.
I just like the spunk Act 2 has in its track. Elevates it a lot for me
>Sandopolis not being Super Sonic at least
>Star Light not being Hyper Sonic
Other than that, pretty factual list. As for CD though... Factual. JP OST for CD is in a Sonic form we will never see.
Why would you even include tiers that don't have anything in them
Because they need to be isolated as far away as possible from the good tiers
Phew! This sure does look like a challenging level, lemme just
Well yeah Tails is easy mode.
Unfortunately there’s some things even Tails can’t skip
I liked Scrap Brain Zone. It feels like a true oppressive industrial hellscape. This game + Sonic CD really makes Robotnik seem like a total lunatic freak.
Say three nice things about it.
Best OST
Most fun to speedrun
Metal Sonic
cool looking sages, good music in both versions and changing the future is cool
OH YEAH, OH YEAH, OH YEAH HEHEH YEAH!!!
1. GET FUNKY
2. BE FUNKY
3. STAY FUNKY
YO HUSTLE HUSTLE
Best OST
Best Gimmick in a Sonic game
Best Exploration in a Sonic game
Secret Best that filters any dweebs with Collision Chaos
is this kino? seems pretty kino to me
CD’s music goes beyond kino tbh
https://youtu.be/srktqxSO_48
Imagine if Sonic 2 got that CD port like it was supposed to…
I fricking love CD but Collision Chaos jump floor do get on my nerves.
SIGN PETITION YEAH
GOT A GOOD BACKPACK
Soul overload, great OST, Metal.
I can't think of a truly fun level in any of the original three Sonic games. I just get reminded of all of Sonic 3's acts and I hate all of them.
1/2
22 year old here. Just finished this the other day. Never played a sonic game before. I'm really good at pretty much all Mario's, can beat lost levels without save states, so I'm pretty good at platformers. This game frustrated me. Seems like there was times where shit just came out of nowhere. Labyrinth zone, walking along, all of a sudden the floor starts rising really fast and I get crushed by spikes on the ceiling. On a conveyor platform, going up, suddenly there's another conveyor crossing paths, I'm trying to figure out where they're leading and I'm crushed by spikes again. I guess you could argue my reflexes could have been better, so I don't know if I'd call it bad design or not. I remember there was also a blind jump with spikes at the bottom. Also, I lost 3 lives and game overed once because the water started rising and I missed the corks to jump on and it never came back down? My friend said it was a glitch, idk. Starlight zone had another blind jump (was it a secret exit? No Eggman sign), and sometimes the flashing blue moving platforms would get fricked up, they'd move away from me and I'd have to try to navigate to another part of the map to get them to reset. Scrap brain just wasn't fun. Spikes hidden by foreground elements in act 3. Waiting for the elevators in springyard is fricking boring and there's so many and they're so long. Level design also seemed really repetitive for this zone, like Im walking through identical sections each act. Ball and chain spikes seemed cheap first time playing in narrow hallways when they're behind foreground elements 95% of their swing. The bosses weren't bad. Special zones were interesting, the frustrating part was not knowing where to go, some seemed like mazes. Wasnt fun until I was actually in the area with the emerald. The bosses weren't bad.
2/2
Not once did I "go fast" and never did I try to go fast, it seemed completely counterintuitive and dangerous to do that. Overall the level design seemed questionable at times. Frustrating, never really seemed fun, mostly tedious. I definitely had more fun playing any Mario game than playing this. Thanks for reading my blog post.
everyone goes through this at first, i'd unironically recomend playing atleast the first few zones atleast 3 times to "get it". But it would be far more enjoyable if you moved on to 2/3&k/maina
>blogging
Try out Sonic 2, CD, and 3 if you can. All good games but if you’re looking for the best 2D Sonic has to offer, it’s 3&K and Mania.
Also despite the gotta go fast mentality, the games are better when yo go at your own pace and learn the levels first. Then go back and speed through em to see how well designed they really are
Sonic 1 is easy as frick
It only took me maybe 3 or 4 game overs to beat it, not like I was stuck on it for weeks. It wasn't particularly hard, just frustrating.
Sonic 1 is one of the best games ever. Green Hill, Marble, Spring Yard, Labyrinth, Star Light and Scrap Brain are platforming bliss
>normally when a game has regional osts the filtered one is complete ass
>Sonic CD’s OST is amazing in both regions
How did they do it?
sonic 1 is very good and probably the most underrated sonic game. I think it is abysmilaly paced, putting marble zone as the second zone really kills the momentum for new players and makes an awfull first impression. However as an experianced player you can make marble zone reasonably fast paced and it offers an far more engaging challenge than green hill with percise platforming and knowlege of the layout, shortcuts and well timed jumps. I think this applies to the whole game. Labarinth zone is indefenceable tho.
>1, 2, CD, 3, S&K, 3D Blast, SA1, SA2, Heroes
1991-2004 Sonic franchise is one of my favorite ones in gaming. I love these games
Agreed, those are the golden years of Sonic to me
Even spin-offs like Sonic R, Shuffle, and Fighters were kino
And don't forget the 8 bit versions of 1, 2, Chaos and Triple Trouble that had unique stages and good level designs too.
I love CD and all but
Why
sovl
Imagine hating Sonic CD
Problem with Sonic CD is that the Past and Present mechanic being tied to unlocking the good ending is fricking annoying.
Also from Wacky Workbench on the platforming is obnoxious
Anyone know what music this is playing in this fan game? Is it original to this game or did it come from somewhere else?
Unless it’s from 3D Blast (didn’t play it much) that’s an original piece of music for the game
liked these games in the past but is probably the worst part of them and does nothing better than mario here when he isn't going fast
I think they envisioned Sonic as masturbation material for fat men from the start and not much else.
>spring yard
>bad
Taste this shit should be illegal.
>people STILL have no valid evidence for Spring Yard being anything but trash beyond the music
Concession accepted
The game is sandwhiched between decent zones (Green Hill, Starlight, Scrap Brain) with a middle made out of pure shit.
https://mega.nz/folder/VC8m3KKK#1uPokCSWN83wy4Uz2TeaPA
mustard gas
Labyrinth is the only stage I think you could really argue in good faith is bad. Sonic 1 was still in an experimental place where they added a lot more traditional platforming. Sonic 2 is where the stages tend to lean more towards letting you go fast and minimizing precise jumps.
I prefer Sonic 1 over 2 anyway. 3 is king though.
This is the only correct rating I haven't played Mania yet
>haven’t played the real Sonic 4
What u waitin for?
Dunno, I keep starting it and losing interest for some reason
Maybe doing like 10 playthroughs of 3&K in the span of a couple weeks burned me out
That’s cool, Mania will be there waiting
Since we probably won’t get a sequel unless it’s done by Sega because of burned bridges….
I'm playing through the games and finished cd recently
hated the pinball section and wacky workbench but the water zone was surprisingly okay
sonic 1 felt like a mediocre prototype but 2's final stage was absolute garbage
2 is the only one with a hard final boss, I lost 11 lives on that shit
>2 bosses
>no rings
it's bullshit tbh
I would like some sort of rom hack level creator like Mario Maker, for 2d Sonics, especially for Sonic 1.
Sonic 1 has way more focus on building momentum, that the next installments abandond for quick starts. It was short lived, and i would like more levels that focus on it.
It isn't rom-hacking, but Sonic Studio is being made right now https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ChCG6C7N7es
It's just meh because of solely the level designs flip flopping
They CAN be good levels but in the wrong game they're terrible for that game's design it's why Sonic CD doesn't really work from a level design perspective for most people
Sonic is actual platforming. Zoomers need not reply
