She's (supposed to be) a companion. Your main companion actually, she (supposedly) travels with you throughout most of the adventure. She (probably) plays (or played) a big role in the story and lore of the game, or she's related to someone important. She was also heavily featured in some of the trailers.
In the actual game, she appears at the very beginning... and that's mostly it. She then appears again at the very end of the game 100 hours later, she does something unexplainable I won't spoil, and that's all she does.
We have (almost) no idea who the frick she is, why she can do what she can do, and why she does what she does. She's the npc we know the least about, even though she's supposed to be the closest to us throughout the game.

A ton of cut content, probably. Even if we ignore the lore implications of her character, even if she was just a random Maiden... why doesn't she AT LEAST appear at bonfires when you need to level-up.
It's not like the Firekeeper in Dark Souls 3 was all that relevant throughout the game, gameplay or story wise. But you had to interact with her to level up, she would emote back, she even had her own mini-quest: that was enough to get somewhat attached to that character.
During my first playthrough, when Melina randomly shows up after you kill Morgott, I was genuinely surprised. Because I forgot she was even a character in the game, I genuinely forgot, that's how irrelevant she is. And then she sacrifices herself and I'm supposed to feel sad about that?

People found a fourth butterfly in the DLC, related to Messmer. So the Smoldering Butterfly we find in the base game is definitely related to Melina, not Messmer as we originally thought. She's Marika's daughter; Marika and some other god, the Gloam Eyed Queen probably.

This and the fact that the intro is a powerpoint of concept art about literally who NPCs when all the marketing material had fully rendered CG cutscenes of key story events that aren't even in the game leads me to believe the story was dramatically gutted or rearranged very close to release.
It's particularly infuriating because they seemed to be putting more care into the narrative this time and there were tons of design elements that were conducive to that. Hopefully they use the DLC to try to remedy that.
Ironically we know shit was changed in the final hours as the 1.0 version of the game has different dialogue and enemy placements.
Like the Misbegotten were meant to be experiments created by Radagon and there is a rotted variant of the ancestral followers that were within the lake of rot temple area during in the 1.0 build.

It would have been annoying to have to talk to her every time you leveled up. What they should have done was her be sitting with you at the site of grace every time you rested at one, with a bunch of random positions she can take like Emerald Herald had. Sometimes she might be sitting close by, sometimes she might be napping, sometimes she might be staring at you or off into the distance. Give her a line of dialogue for each region that you that you'll say if you talk to her, and then have her do a special animation when she wants to talk to you because you've unlocked new dialogue. There done, now she's your constant companion, you're unlikely to miss any of her dialogues, and you will actually feel her absence when she's gone after she sacrifices herself.

At that point the game is basically over. The only mandatory content after that is Farum Azula and three bosses. Technically she also shows up right after Morgott, so there's that I guess.

Assuming you know that's going to happen, I didn't sit at graces and missed a few dialogues on my first playthrough.

In the story, you're supposed to get basically a state-mandated gf when you first get to the continent where the game takes place. But you find your state-assigned gf dead when the game starts and the gal in the pic, Melina, agrees to fill the role, doing the bare minimum and basically having you in the friend zone the whole time.

It also requires quite a bit of out of game reading on some esoteric concepts. Spending an hour reading up on metallurgy itself will actually help you learn some of the lore going on with gold and crucibles and what they do when forging.

Do your stats going into the DLC matter at all or does everyone start at the same baseline?
No one knows. Those who tried the DLC said you get a certain amount of stats (stats like attack and armor, not VIG and FTH) for each blessing you find. But every character was level 150, so maybe you get more stats the lower level you are..? I doubt that's how it works though, it would be weird to level up and potentially become weaker.
Imo you get a flat amount of stats (which are more relevant, percentage wise, if you're lower level) + mobs drop a shitload of runes, so it's relatively easy to catch-up in levels.
There's an item that you can gather in the DLC area like golden seeds that you use to upgrade your character. It seems at after each upgrade it increases you damage by 5%. There's also a similar item that you can use to upgrade Torrent and spirit ashes.

A handful, and most of her dialogue is exposition about Marika.
She appears at a handful near the start of the game and then outside of the churches only appears for Boc two times, two times before leaving during Lyndell, 3 more times after beating Morgott, once cutscene for burning herself, and then two dialogues and one cutscene for going the Frenzy Route.
That may seem like a bit but that is so dispersed throughout the game.
To put that into perspective, barring the churches, on the world map she has her into bits of dialogue in Limgrave, only like one Boc convo in The Lakes, no dialogue in Caelid, the majority of her dialogue in Atlus, nothing for Gelmir, nothing for any of the underground zones, and a bit more in The Mountaintops, alongside having nothing for Consecrated Snowfield, or Moghwyn.
She only really talks to you in three of the 10 areas in game.

Its a design problem, you are given ZERO incentives on sitting on graces, its a pace breaker and unless you are really low on resources you can always kill a mob and get your stuff back without going through a black screen.
If people were forced to sit at graces to, i dont know, teleport around the map, the chances of people sitting on the churches she has dialogue would spike up dramatically, doubly so if you lowered the amount of graces, making players realize churchers would always have graces for them to teleport.
TLDR; By making the adventuring "as smooth as possible" they crippled what little character Melina had.

Distinguishing things like Altus and Gelmir as fully separate areas is weird though, they are sub areas generally. Technically eastern Caelid and Dragonbarrow are separate, but they're both part of the Caelid biome

I disagree, the only obscure thing From asks of the player for the average questline is to speak to them multiple times for more dialogue and maybe revisit them semi-frequently, the questlines motivation are natural because their progression is just meeting them again later in the game, something you will do naturally by virtue of exploring the world.
The problem comes when you lock interactions behind actions the player will not do, like sitting on every grace, there are hundreds of them, did you sit on them all or just activated them and then kept going since you were full on flasks? They dont even work as checkpoints anymore thanks to their abundance and Stakes. Maybe if you are full of runes and want to level up but that will hardly happen while you are traveling in the overworld and instead, happens at the end of a dungeon, which in case you will just use the closest one by, either made by the boss you beat or at the entrance of the dungeon if smaller.
If you are locking character interactions behind usage of checkpoints you gotta give me more incentive to use those checkpoints.
Having Melina's dialogue options at the bottom of the list is the only real design flaw. Any grace she talks at should have her talk option at the top where changing the time of day is normally at.
Only shows up a handful of times in Limgrave and basically dissappears until you get close to the Grand Lift. Even then, most of her dialogue is more about Marika than herself.

Going out of your way to revisit characters which may or may not have updated after the latest bit of progress takes more time than sitting down at a newly activated grace to quickly check if there's something new. Because in terms of endearing her to the player, the Marika Echoes are the equivalent of dead calories and more so serve to prop up Marika's character. So it feels kinda disingenuous to count those as part of her dialogue.
But that's what every maiden does, just lay down sone lore until all you hear from them is repeated level up dialog. Melina has more personal dialog than most, if anything, and is also personally connected to Marika's lore. As another anon said, ppl just wanna hold her hand understandably

You can do some basic intelligence spells at lower levels. Entry-level incantations need a bit more. If you're melee, you should play around with your Ashes of War.
You're set on Vigor until you get to the endgame. Maybe level up Endurance to roughly 20 if you want some of the heaviest armor. Everything else is up to you. If you're melee, you might want to pick between Strength or Dex, but you can still do a Quality build if you want both.

Is there a good, simple explanation for how poise works in ER? The only guides I can find online are from PvPers with 3000 hours of playtime who use a ton of impenetrable jargon, I just need to know if having poise actually helps against bosses

The answer to that should answer your question.
It activates while you're doing an attack, the longer the attack the better. It is not DaS tier where it's passive and can take more than one swing.
Poise is for when you swing your weapon. If the enemy hits you first and your poise stat is higher than the poise damage from their attack you continue the swing, if your poise is lower you get staggered instead.
Very helpful for big slow weapons.
Yeah, there are two types. There's passive poise, which means an enemy can hit you while you're doing nothing and it doesn't phase you, you are completely uninterrupted from whatever you're doing. Most weapons are well above 100 poise damage which means you can mostly ignore this part with a caveat. If you're only concerned with pve, 51 is what you want for good passive poise and you can disregard the rest of this post. In pvp, good passive poise to reach is generally 88 so that you can tank the second hit of a shamshir (follow up attacks in a chain of swings only do half poise damage, this is the caveat I mentioned).
The second type of poise is like pseudo hyper armor. Basically, when you swing your weapon it has a hidden poise value that it adds on top of your current poise. The bigger and more moronic the weapon, the more poise it gives you to trade with while you're swinging so you can be uninterrupted while attacking. You can look at this table for a recommended value to shoot for (usually so you can trade with a colossal). In deciphered over-complicated moron reddit speak, MAP just means the poise value you want to reach for the weapon type and MAP+talisman just means you poise value you want to reach if you're also equipping bull-goats talisman to increase your poise.

I don’t know if pve enemies even have that kind of hyper armor. They probably just have true hyper armor. Most of what I explained is all pvp. If you only care about pve then just get 51 poise and forget about the rest, it will be useless trivia to you otherwise. All you need to know about pve enemy poise is doing enough stance damage makes them crumble so you can get a free riposte and bigger weapon = more stance damage.

Ancient Dragons are smart in ER and were the Greater WIll's first chosen people (under their scales they are golden). They just couldn't use tools with their claws and so raised beasts to sentience to serve them. The normal ones we fight across the game are also smart but are a devolution born from Greyol.
You know, I read stuff like this and wonder how anons can think that the lore is BS and an afterthought when it clearly links together.
The issue with Elden Ring lore is that it requires a lot of reading of various items scattered across the game, paying attention to what magic is being used and how its being used, and a willingness to assume the reasoning on why certain characters act the way they do based upon said lore and environmental details because the game will not tell you.
Like to make that description of whats up with the dragons I not only needed to have read the Greyol's Roar item description, but also read all of the Ancient Dragon lore across their items, read the Beastmen's Item descriptions that mostly are obtained form their drops, read the Bestial Incantations you get from doing the Deathroot Questline alongside the dagger that buffs them which you can only get by doing Platforming behind Gurranq's temple, understand the full implications of the title of Elden Lord and how Emperyans become Gods, pay attention the the dragons models, and notice that big Elden Ring symbol in the boss chamber.

Bleed in general is not OP, it's only certain builds that can make it like that. Bloodhound Fang in particular is a curved greatsword which is slow. The only way someone is inflicting bleed on bosses with that is by playing aggressively and in order to do that, you need to learn the patterns well.

Yes. You will notice that while you can see the rest of the area you can't really go there yet. It's to give you a taste of what's to come.
Although there is one you can bypass but it requires you to kill a very high HP enemy beyond your initial encounter level.
