The only flaw with combat is AI party members not willing to attack and generate ATB. Barret should have zero reason to not be shooting 5 times as much as he does right now.

Basically having to strategize by switching character to character in real time can allow for very satisfying sequences where each character’s strengths and weaknesses are on full display. Synergies are immensely satisfying and when you take enemies down fluidly and efficiently it feels much better than any traditional JRPG. The different play style of each character also helps differentiate between combat encounters depending on party composition as well as overall item preparedness. Be honest, in the original you could mostly mash the basic attack and with some healing interspersed you would win 99% of battles. Here you really need to change things up for the occasion whether it be which character you’re using, which ability, who needs ATB charging, etc. I’m not saying it’s perfect but for what it is it’s very enjoyable and I’m not sure what other game combat system to compare it to outside of Kingdom Hearts I guess.

Combat is absolutelly the best part of 7R.
Final Fantasy has struggled with figuring out a battle system to replace Turn Based/ATB, but they nailed it here.
7R is an ideal hybrid of ATB and read time combat. The regular attacks don't do that much dammage but th point is to have you charge your ATB quickly to use the actual damage-dealing moves & magic. Because dodging is rather useless combared to blocking to tank in damage, the game actually forces you to exploit enemy weaknesses; it's more an RPG than an Action Game with Stats.
Plus the party members not doinG much on their own works to the combat's advantage, you're actually supposed manage your whole party as you would in previous FF and it forces you to get good and understanding their strenghts, instead of putting two of them on auto-pilot and playing the game like Kingdom Hearts
Seriously, this series has had constantly-changing battle systems since XII that mostly come as half-baked, but this is absolutelly what they should stick with moving forward rather than giving up on the RPG elements altogether like XVI did.
Anon, I still think VII is a far superior game, but the fight with Ruffus was the highlight 7R for me. It's doesn't just have you fighting two bosses, it has the Bosses sync their attacks to make it difficult for you to find openings.

The only boss that can kill you in the coffin boss in shinra manor but other than that you have to be low IQ to actually get a gameover in this game.

In the original using a tent and saving takes like 5 seconds max. In the remake sitting on a bench and saving is going to take you minutes.

Once you get good the combat is basically a faster paced turn based. You don't think about the buttons you are pressing but the strategy and the equipment you are wearing. Especially on Hard mode. This is quite possibly the most tactical and strategic game in the franchise even though the combat is not turn based. Because when you think about it, turn based should offer more opportunities to be more tactical and stuff but instead is always as braindead as it gets. Meanwhile FF7R's combat while being fast paced action is also at the same time strategic as frick. It's literally the best combat there is in video games. This is it. The best.
