It's a patrician tier franchise that has not got a new game in forever, while having inspired a gazillion other indie games that have been amazing in its absence mostly thanks to Metroid itself being great.
Getting a new metroid game that looks like what you should expect in the trailers almost guarantees a hell of a time with a videogame. Metroid at its best is pure, unadultered heaven, and it's back on the menu.

I loved the Prime games but I've never finished a 2D Metroid. I always take a break somewhere in the middle and then forget where I'm supposed to be going by the time I come back to it. Should I still get this one?

You very clearly did not grow up with this series.
I feel like if you did grow up with it, you're aware that there have been plenty of misses to go along with the hits and you should know to temper your expectations by now when many other games have done the 2D Metroid thing but better. Even games like Metroid Fusion were kinda worse than their GBA Castlevania counterparts. That's not to say Fusion was a bad game, it's obviously a good game but these sort of games have just been done better by others.
That being said it's a Switch game so being excited to play it for free and then buying it to support the devs if they didn't frick it up is certainly a thing.
