He's basically the good version of the ultimate lifeform created by Gerald Robotnik who is Eggmans father. The evil version is the final boss of Sonic Adventure 2.

To follow up on the other posts people have already made: no relation to Sonic has ever been expounded. It remains unclear why Gerald Robotnik's "ultimate lifeform" looks almost exactly like Sonic who did not exist yet. It's possible he was inspired by the same prophetic mural that we see in Sonic & Knuckles.

Helps they were willing to depict one that is allowed to tie/beat Sonic unlike Metal.
They often depict "stronger" villains but the thing is those villains just don't do much in the story, like Infinite, who is for some reason Eggman's henchman (even though he can just take over the world at a point)
Meanwhile Shadow actually had presence in the story, scene cut and he's posing menacingly at the top of the Golden Gate Bridge surrounded by cops, "I promise you... REVENGE!"

Best character in the franchise
Shadow gets way more shit than he deserves because of one bad game that misunderstood and mishandled the character. But he's popular for a reason, and his debut is one of, if not THE best Sonic game ever.
I hope the movie does what it needs to to redeem a genuinely good character who caught a lot of bad flak.

his arc is perfectly wrapped up in SA2 (as was the whole series really with eggman reflecting on things. If we had just jumped from SA2 to 06 to reboot shit (and 06 was good) that would've been for the best. Shadow was actually pretty good in 06
Agreed. The issue was that the character was basically a foil to his own popularity.
I remember in an interview, Maekawa the lead writer behind SA2 was very much against the idea of bringing Shadow back for Sonic Heroes, but upper management insisted and he had to concede. The character was just too popular. Which consequently also led to the development of Shadow the Hedgehog.
It's interesting to think what Sonic Heroes would have been with the absence of Team Dark. Likewise if you delete Shadow the Hedgehog from existence, and Sonic and the Secret Rings, and pour all that development effort into Sonic 06, which would mark the return of Shadow.

Lazy new character for SA2. Trash downgrade from the first SA1 besides the Rail Grinding and Sonic levels. Also Shadow levels but really it was just Black person sonic levels.
It is just a joke about Eggman's grandfather predicting Sonic as the ultimate lifeform. Shadow's original story in adventure 2 is so popular because of his sacrifice, overcoming his creator's will. Everything else like aliens, emeralds and murals doesn't really add much of value.
