It's a tip top game, but at least install the diablo devilutionx mod. It's absolutely perfect and adds qol-improvements while staying canon and faithful to the original

I knew a guy that grew up with D2 and he couldn't stand D1 because he thought it was "too slow" and hated not being able to blow up the screen. Basically, he had the same complaint D3 fans have when they try to play D2. This series has always been in decline with each subsequent game.

the thing I don't like about d1 is that I can almost beat it in a single setting but can't really get the motivation to finish it the next day
After a while you get so fricking rich, you fill the town with tons of items and gold piles on the ground, and it's just a matter of finishing it which I can't bring myself to.

I don't recommend D1 to fans of D2 at all. I'd recommend it to fans of 80s and 90s dungeon crawlers, though.
it's not really a replacement for D2 at all and is a cool experience, it's not a grind game you replay over and over you just go through it.
You don't know what you are talking about. Nightmare and doom are impossible to beat without grinding to level 25 first
level requirements for higher difficulties is not the same loot hunting build optimisation gameplay as D2, don't pretend otherwise

Nightmare and Hell mode were never intended to be played single player. You actually have to edit files and shit to get it to work without multiplayer from what I remember. Mods probably change that now though.

Not really. It feels really annoying to play single player. Everything stunlocks the shit out of you and the monsters barely give more exp to compensate for the increased difficulty.
That's what I thought. NM and Hell is really just an afterthought for D1. But D2 really perfectly nails the difficulty bump, D2 is a really well designed game in terms of post-game grind. D1 is just a unique experience but it's not worth doing much after playing and completing each hero once.
Isn't there some Hell only content? And of course, the increased better tier of gear in higher difficulties.

If you enjoyed Diablo 1 PvP, I highly recommend giving Dark & Darker a look.
It's 3D but the loot/combat/magic mechanics feel like FPV Diablo 1.
For me? Grim Dawn's Reign of Terror D1+D2 mod.

I only enjoyed a single playthrough of d1 but that’s because of the horror atmosphere. Why do people play these games for thousands of hours? I feel like I understand even RuneScape players better than diablo players.
