I just finished HL1 and thought it was really good. I just got to the antlion chapter in this game and I am struggling to stay awake it's so boring. Does this game eventually get good or is it just a source engine tech demo? Should I just go straight to the episodes? I hear those are better.
The game does pick up again very shortly after where you are. Once you reach the prison it stops fricking around and gets down to it.
However it still isnt better than HL1. And neither are the episodes. But yes, the first half of HL2 is actually bad.

Even if it is hard for a zoomer brain to fathom: 2004 reviews were nowhere near as blatant lies as today. And a game getting a 7 meant is was actually still aweseome. Today people only think in 9s and 10s, it shows brainrot.

Half-Life 2 was developed at the same time as Source engine, so the level designers hadn't fully figured out how to fully "gamify" certain features, so it's a common criticism that Half-Life 2 feels more "tech demo" than Half-Life and the Half-Life 2 Episodes.
Also since it leans more heavily on physics, people who don't have as much fun just throwing physics objects around don't end up being as impressed and have as much fun with the physics engine. (During Half-Life 2's development, Gabe Newell would reportedly have tons of fun just playing basketball with the gravity gun, and that naturally ended up influencing the design)
That's not a common criticism. People love this game, its engine, its physics, etc.
Some people certainly do (including me; I'm also a weirdo who just has fun throwing things around with the gravity gun), but there are also people like OP who don't find messing with physics objects fun.

I wish it weren't the case, but I've tried to get some friends into Half-Life 2 and Source engine games in general, and can attest that some people really do just not care about world interactivity.
Time has gone on from when HL2 was pushing the physics in games. Anyone playing games after HL2 will have encountered the standard of physics in games and going back won't be so novel. It's like looking back in hindsight that the first games really pushing physics puzzles isn't surprising to find it's not so impressive anymore.
When HL2 came out, physics stuff like the gravity gun was still uncommon (and HL2 did it best), and FPS vehicles were still uncommon (even though Halo did it best). Those were really fun to mess with at the time. But 20 years later all that shit is pretty stale, that’s all

Half Life 2 isn't that great gameplay wise, and you're pretty much right in your assessment that it's a tech demo. People loved the source engine physics though, it's probably why more people have played Garry's Mod than HL2 itself.
