id love to play it but the AI spamming me every turn about "how great" my military is is annoying
the mod that fixed that was outdated last i checked

I wasn't anywhere near as bad as people say, it suffered from being both a Civ title AND alpha centauri's spiritual successor (or at least that's what people expected).

Should have been a total conversion expansion pack or at least priced as such.

Add to that the choice of using earth's politics as faction basis when everyone gets samey eventually with all unit designs open. It's the proto-Humankind.
      Is CODEX still being updated?

I feel like the consensus isn't even really that it's bad. It's just bland and forgettable.

As I posted earlier, it's not bad. It was lobotomized in favor of board game sensibilities. Instead of trying to establish worldbuilding or a plot like SMAC did, all it cares about is what resource cubes you are given next turn and what bonuses a faction or technology offer. It doesn't care about the personalities or backstories of faction leaders in the slightest, they're basically just cards you pick at the start of the game.

This is an overall problem at Firaxis now, as they just don't make vidya anymore. They easily could, but their entire design process revolves around board games.

my guy that's basically the entire 4X genre in a nutshell. Your whining and pics you posted before are just about them removing fluff to make the gameplay related bonuses more concise. Frankly both the old and new in that first pic you posted are shit. They should do it like Endless where they have the fluff at the top then at the bottom you see what gameplay benefits each decision will give you, that way people who care about fluff get it and people who just wanna game can ignore it

I actually agree. But the point remains that Firaxis' game design leans heavily towards board games, which you can see with Civ 6 literally being based around cards - 90% of which are useless - instead of just a social engineering mechanic.

Yeah, I really don't like Civ6 for many reasons and ended up refunding it. Firaxis just seems to be making worse and worse decisions and getting rewarded for it.

Mostly this. I'd add that the "funny" new materials were stpupid. Floatstone, firaxit and such

This. My friends and I recently reinstalled it (since it's the only relatively recent civ game by brother will tolerate playing, and the astronaut reaching out to touch the glass gave me chills.
It helps even more that I can remember when I played the game at release I was a little bit of a "heckin' science!" sort of person. Now, years later, receiving the blessing from the priests before setting off would definitely be meaningful to me.

i liked it too. It's was not a alpha centauri but it was fun in it's own way. The sad part is that they abandoned the game with only one DLC and a really broken diplomacy system.

The ideologies are cool but since they give units and win conditions they make faction choice less impactful
So instead of every nation more or less being a worth a playthrough like in other CIV games once you do a run with each ideology you've pretty much experienced the whole game

    It's wasted potential for me.
Apart of the shenanigans you could pull of in Alpha Centauri, the leaders (at least from the base game) had visible character and charm.
I don't feel anything from this.

Yeah yeah but the lack of support and various superficial features held it back.
WH: Gladius, now that's the real sci fi 4X.
It even has a reskinned miasma mechanic.

Honestly it wasn't as bad as people made it out to be. However, I played it recently after paying $2 for both base game and expansion + all the updates. It was fun but not super interesting. The factions or whatever companies are called were super boring. The thing that made me wanna play was the affinities since seeing the models change was cool. Definitely a one and done game for me.

That being said, I can 100% understand why people were pissed at release. $50 for just the base game after the marketing basically tried to make it seem like AC2 is awful. I'm definitely glad I didn't bother buying it at release and instead bought Endless Legend

The affinities were a really cool idea. I enjoyed the idea of retroactively altering your earlier troops into stronger, different looking variants to both reflect the shifting attitudes of your culture and to keep them viable. Doubling down on it in the expansion was a smart idea, too, but they arguably didn't go far enough with it there. Also, based Endless Legend enjoyer.

      I like it.

It suffered from unmet expectations which led to it being dropped. It's a good Civ-type game but could've been something truly amazing had Firaxis just stuck it out for another major expansion or two to refine an already solid foundation.

Affinities was awful and a key reason why the factions didn't have distinct personalities, because each faction had to be capable of going into any of the affinities. Unlike SMAC where canonically Zakharov hates Skye and her mindworm pets while Skye is a Planet cultist, but the player can control the factions however they like. Affinities would have worked far better in Civilization proper where you could have fun late game stuff like cyberpunk vs biopunk or something.

        >canonically Zakharov hates Skye and her mindworm pets
until he starts talking with Planet himself, probably after picking up Cybernetics (he always goes for Knowledge, but it also gives him +2 Planet)
Gameplay wise neither Zak nor Deirdre ar in each other's way. Zak does not give a frick about Economy (nothing that boosts or hinders Knowledge) and Deirdre doesn't care about Values (nothing that boosts or hinders Planet)

Affinities were a cool idea in theory.
In practice it was "did you start next to shiny spiky rock or the floaty rock?"
There was no explanation why Earth Purists love something so un-Earthlike as Floatstone, and power almost all tech using it.
Even CivV did factions better, making them semi-alliances with pooled cultural tenants.

One thing I really liked in it is how after unlocking the unit you get to pick a permanent upgrade for its entire line. I think mainline Civ should adopt this system. The system where obsolete units hang around is kinda dumb and annoying to manage.

The game is pretty shallow, felt like a mod. But I did enjoy it on launch, had many hours of fun with friends. It got a fair bit better with the expansion, water cities were cool. Its not a great game but I put in a few hundred hours and I don't regret the.

don't know what version of the game you're playing, but the AI does not get free units or tech on the latest versions
