Respectfully disagree. Sure, planning out defenses and watching them work is pretty damn great. But my personal favourite is attacking the enemy's base and realizing hey, I've found pretty much everything, can see most of what he has and can now predict what he's going to try and can counter it before it happens. That point where you go from uncertainty and fog of war to having the enemy dancing on the palm of your hand is what gets my pp hard.
strategy game campaigns on high difficulty are difficult in the same way that shoving your dick into a moving fan without getting hit by any of the blades is hard

AoE2s campaigns are very fun but good god can some turn into nightmare runs. I did the saladin achivemnt where I have to beat all the other ai and not build the wonder. I made the huge mistake of not rushing like 2 of the AIs. I think it took me like 4 hours of grinding them down with 100-1 knds. Still fun though.
i remember that one too, i figured my best bet was just rushing the AIs ASAP because 5 AIs dogpiling on me with my limited resources was just too much to handle.
turns out the rightmost AI is completely helpless to stop your starter navy from wiping out its town center and then it just resigns. had to be more careful microing the AIs i was rushing by land though

Base building in AoE2 is comfy as frick and does not need cheating AI bum rushes to make it fun
I only mess with the difficulty if the strategy game's idea of difficulty is "we give them more things than you but they're still moronic"
