I feel like in the first game they made him a fat useless slob and Bentley a cowardly nerd to try and make Sly look cooler by comparison then realized in later games it would just be better if they were all likeable to some degree. Seriously both him and Bentley are almost intolerable in the first game.
Just finished re-watching a playthrough of 4, is there any plans for this canon to continue in any form? I see no signs of a game being made, and apparently the movie was DOA due to Ratchet's bomb. There may also be a tv-series?
There was a leak that suggested Sly 5 is in development but no-one knows who the developer will be. It's not going to be Sanzaru since they got bought out by Facebook and only make VR games for Oculus now. I'm doubtful that Sucker Punch is going to return to the IP, but I guess we won't know until / unless it gets announced.
Sly 3 kind of left some things unresolved though. For starters, there's the issue of whether or not the Cooper family cycle of endlessly hoarding treasure is going to continue, and it was also pretty unethical of Sly to fake having amnesia. The game ends with him and Carmelita building a relationship around lies and it was inevitably going to come to a head eventually.

He did have a cameo in the most recent Ratchet And Clank game. So there is still hope for Sly to make a comeback of some kind. Though I wouldn't put money on it.

Sly 4 wasn't THAT bad, but I considered it non-canon because Sly 3 was a perfect conclusion in every way imaginable. The series could just nosedive from that point on.
Story wise Sly 4 is the weakest although gameplay wise I liked it a lot. It was basically Sly 2 with better graphics.
The game that I felt was the weakest in terms of gameplay was Sly 3 because it was way too gimmicky. Tons of new characters you have to play as and they all kind of suck, and the in-game economy was completely broken. Getting rid of collectable clue bottles was a huge mistake and made the levels feel really empty. It's the only game in the franchise that I didn't get platinum on, too.

It might be the worse game in the series, but has the coolest level out of the bunch.
The art direction in Sly 4 is amazing. Shame the character modelers fricked half of it up.
