AC6 is nothing like the old games

Depends on what you mean by "oldgen." Like Gen 5? 4? 3 and back? Because I can recommend all of them except Gen 5 (so V and VD). Look up gameplay and figure out yourself if any of them look fun.

I replay Armored Core 1 and Master of Arena every year. I don't know why I love those janky ps1 games but they are so full of soul I can't explain it.

Hes talking about Last Raven/Nexus. They are considered 3.5 gen to some people since dual wielding became a thing and the analog sticks became movement thus changing gen 3 up drastically from base AC3.

I want to play 6 but I'm worried I'll hate the controls and end up getting it and not playing it. Review said the controls were made for casuals but I'd like to know if that can be changed to something more classic? I'd prefer looking up and down with the shoulder buttons over casualized drivel.

gen 4 is probably the safest bet if you like 6. the other games are different but in good ways.

6 is more of an action game and you need it to be less clunky than old gen because it fully expects you to be able to not get hit.

AC6 doesn't have casualised controls imo. But don't expect to be looking up and down with shoulder buttons, that hasn't been a thing since Nexus and it wouldn't work with this game because it's more action-focussed than most previous games.

Play AC1 and if you don't enjoy it don't play any more

AC6 controls are divisive because they're infinitely better when you bite the bullet and switch to kb&m.

AC6 feels much better with M&K, so just use that.

All but ACV and VD are decent choices. I'd say try out AC1, MoA, 2, 3, and Silent Line. You can play Another Age anytime after AC2, but I'd recommend holding out on it because you can get burnt out on it really quickly due to the shear number of missions in the game (with a good number of them being forgettable).

I’m nostalgic for brown and bloom so it’s got my attention. Why don’t you like VD?

Its not that I dislike it necessarily, its just kind of a mess compared to basically everything else the series has on offer. Its the second... no third weakest game in the series and is just kind of meh at the end of the day. Its not bad like V was, just not really as fun as any other game in the series. I was going to call it the second weakest, but then I remembered Ninebreaker exists.

vd is really divisive. the main thing i hear people complain about is the three defense types but the whole purpose of those was to avoid having a situation like 6 where you can just run zimmers or a missile boat against everything.

is armored core 4's trial still up?

Yes. Third or fourth gen are generally considered the best, but it comes down to personal preference since they all have something to love. One thing you'll want to note though is that until Nexus there's no analog support. The best way to get around this is to either get used to learning the controls (recommended) or map the camera motion to the face buttons (EG: Triangle look up, square look left, X look down, Circle look right) and the weapon/booster operations to the shoulders to emulate twinstick controls.

Alternatively, mod AC6. It has a really healthy modding scene at the moment.

Armored Core is one of the purest action game series out there. Playing through its whole evolution is really cool.

Don't forget if you're emulating you could also pair the face button swap with making the right stick the face buttons.

I wish someone told me when I first played AC1 that you can rebind the controls so that you can use the face buttons as a makeshift right stick

      I will never understand this.

using shoulders buttons to look up and down is counterintuitive even more so if you played FPSs on console before, in my case it was Medal of Honor 1 on the PS1

    Yeah.
Even if the gameplay is different and quite janky, there's a lot of Mecha kino too be had.
Even with the first trilogy for the PSX, the OST of those are fricking great.

    r8 my toon!

I absolutely DESTROYED the enforcer in about a minute just now with it and went back to see how it would do against the sea spider and I ABSOLUTE DESTROYED it too and got an S rank.

I really don't see how mechs can get better than this one.

The essentials are 1, Arena, Last Raven, 4, For Answer, and 6. Everything between Arena and LR is basically the same game so they're optional.

Yeah, Gen 1 especially. Best setting and atmosphere imo. Just gotta change up the controls a bit and they're still hella fun.
