I started playing this a few days ago and I’m really enjoying it. I liked all the previous FFs but as I got older some of them just don’t hold up well. Ff12 was the only one I skipped cause I hated the combat system immediately the first time I tried it. Coming back to this game now, I’m amazed at how much better the story/world/writing is compared to the other FFs. It makes 7 and 8 look like dogshit by comparison. I don’t know anything about the production of this game, but did something change at square between FFX and this? It just seems so much more competent, story wise. Having a blast with the game so far.

Cool blog post homosexual.
Thanks for taking the time to reply to it moron.
>DON'T TALK ABOUT VIDEO GAMES ON Ganker!!!!!!
>FRICKING homosexual TALKING ABOUT VIDEO GAMES ON Ganker
It was definitely a step in the right direction for FF in the future to take only for them to step further back with FF13. Especially since the core audience has grown up, you can't really make stuff like FF7,8,10, in this day and age because most people who play these games aren't kids or young teenagers anymore. However it was still bogged down by meddling in a desperate attempt to appeal to that audience still.
There's only really 2 ways the Final fantasy series can continue anymore. Make a cool JRPG that actually appeals to this generations younger crowd which it hasn't, or to grow up with its old audience to try to appeal to them.
I'm in my 30s and I still want games like 7,8,9,10, and tactics. Add polish and general improvements and I'd buy it every time
i really want a modern version of tactics (but not advance tactics)
The game, it's production, and the finished product are all a complete wiener up in all capacities. Matsuno basically had a nervous breadown. And the end result was crap. They fixed some of the problems with the later editions including zodiac age, but it's still a turd, especially the story and characters. As of Zodiac Age it's also definitely the easiest FF game, which says a lot because it's a very easy series. Still though FFXII was basically a let's play or twitch stream before those were a thing. Instead of say a xenosaga 1 where you could spend 40 minutes watching a cutscene, here you could spend hours just watching the gameplay. Revolutionary.
i don’t remember exactly what happened, but ff12 had a real clusterfrick of a development process. it all worked out pretty good though, because it’s probably the best FF game to come out after the playstation 1 era games.
That’s surprising to hear it had a shitty development. It feels way more cohesive than most other FFs. I also like how much more emphasis they put on other characters, instead of front loading lol the interesting parts onto the “main protagonist”, maybe that changes further into the game, but I’ve never been more interested in the “side” characters of a FF game. Hopefully I don’t eat those words later.
well vaan himself is a complete noncharacter, i cant quite remember but i believe he and penelo were added to appeal to younger people, basch was the main character to begin with and it pretty much plays out like that anyways, balthier being what feels like the 'true' protagonist of 12 properly, especially considering the ending
vaan is just this weird insert for us to view the characters through him
I think it’s ok that vaan is like that. I’m not finished yet so maybe I shouldn’t talk on the subject too much. But in a way the contrast of how plain Vaan is makes the rest of the cast shine especially bright. I’m sure it wasn’t intentional.
I really don’t mind how simple vaan is, maybe if the other characters sucked it would be a much bigger issue.
i thought it was fine, you can complain about it if you want but like fran gets it the worst, vaan at least has some character.
interestingly the entire story of ff12 is the story of “side characters”, the people who weren’t part of the official history of the rebellion. keep in mind when you hear the storyteller (ondore?) narrating about the rebellion at the start of each chapter, that you never see or have anything to do with this in the entire game. the ivalice games are all “side stories” in that way. frick there was a great screencap post that explained all this way better, but i cant find it
found the screencap, spoilers be here
but really it’s not spoiling the plot, it’s just making it comprehensible
I’ll save this, I assume I don’t want to read it right now if I haven’t finished the game right?
yeah there are some major spoilers in there, but it will help you to understand what the frick is happening, if you replay after reading that the plot will make a lot more sense
I wish more games made use of a Gambit system.
Don't listen to the shit taste homosexuals on this board, enjoy your great game, OP.
Yeah I learned a long time ago that it’s best to just ignore this board and play what I want, then come talk about it here afterwards. I missed out on a few great games because I took too many opinions from the board before playing. TPP comes to mind as an example.
Is the game any good on Switch Lite? I have the game on PS2 and PS4 already but want it portable because it's one of my favorite games and it seems like it would be good to play during down time.
i got it on the regular switch, it runs fine and is a perfect handheld game.
decent port, i've played the original PS2 on release, PS4 version, PC, and now Switch
The story is more mature, though the way it's told is jumbled & not compelling as a narrative.
Personally I think the insanely good graphics for PS2, the music, and having theatre actors deliver voice lines instead of the usual hacks carry the game.
>tfw XII is the only FF I like because it's not EXACTLY turn based but it's also not for braindead Black folk
i think the writer is the tactics guy, the game has a reputation for having a rocky dev cycle though and im pretty sure a lot was scrapped and rewritten.
there was a lot going on at square at the time, i think that was around the squeenix merger, but the transition from 8-10 was pretty much as big a shakeup as you could get for the series, xii is the result of the staff shakeup and people taking different roles.
the guy doing the writing is very good as far as anything FF goes, its not even great but its very tolerable in contrast.
>It just seems so much more competent, story wise
>Literally copy Star Wars
>You realize once you drop the Shakespearean delivery; the writing is trite
>Half if not major plot points happen off screen away from the player
>Vaan is a literal cameraman with little investment in the plot
>Ashe is a dull and dislikable female lead
>Whole plot is literally a string of fetch quests in dungeons which are same looking mazes with no rewards for exploring other than Knots of Rust
>Main bad doesnt even meet the heroes until the end and even afterwords feels like there should have been more
Not even XIII bored me as much as this game did.
>Star Wars
>literally the hero's journey
>literally copied from mythology
>acting like everything isn't already copied/inspired from something else
do you need me to buy you a helmet so you don't hurt yourself?
>literally enforces the point the plot is unoriginal
Nah - its good. Looks like you need it more than I.
Wasnt the Enix merger during XIIs development?
girls a cute
comfy world
story is alright i guess
but the combat gets very tedious (i suppose like a lot of jrpgs)
i just zoned out during combat of the last half of the game or so, just to finish it. couldn't be arsed to finish all the hunts
>steals the spotlight in every scene he is in
wasn't the original MC supposed to be either Balthier or Basch anyway?
I love that balthier is famous for slaying puss. And his pilot skills, but mostly slaying puss.
Try to get this achievement WITHOUT using a strategy guide or walkthrough.
I like 7s story and dont really see the issue OP has with it. Yeah the "sequels" and remake sour it a bit but 7 actually asks the player to pay attention a little bit and also think a bit. It's perfectly serviceable as an introduction to these games and as such the hate is kind of stupid to me. Hating popular things doesnt make you enlightened OP.
